What a great video! That’s the first time I’ve heard someone mention how the wrappers peel away in segments, which is so convenient. I have a set of 48 K.I.Noor extra soft pastels and they are superb - buttery soft but not crumbly. I’m thinking of getting some regular softs for backgrounds and under work to preserve my precious extra softs and your beautiful demonstration has persuaded me. I’d also like to say how much I enjoyed your commentary, very interesting and useful information and tips. Many thanks Kerry x

Thank you for your inspiring and really enjoyable tutorial…. It’s lovely to see a flower subject among so many other you tube tutorials that cater for wildlife subjects. I have just ordered the Koh I nor pastel pencils and am very tempted to get the soft pastels you demonstrated here to compliment them. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more, especially with flowers ! 🌸 From Joanne, in Essex U.K. 🥰

@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist I'm working on a puppy, I've been busy lately with my birds, but I will be finishing it soon, its almost done but I don't want to rush it. I want to invest in some pastelmat paper soon. I've got some mi teintes and I'm going to save it for coloured pencils I think. I'm looking forward to your next video, and I'm sure I will watch all your others again. 😉

Absolutely brilliant review. I had no idea I could paint with the dilute form of the pastel. How many dilute layers would you typically use on Pastelmat? Have you ever found that you damage Pastelmat when it’s wet? I once ruined a sheet trying to underpaint with watercolour and I’m wondering if it was because I overwet or didn’t allow it to fully dry. So pleased to have found your channel. Sorry to ask so many questions 😊

Awe thank you Adrienne, your comment is truly appreciated. When using watered down layers of pastel pigment I really haven’t come to a moment where I couldn’t add more. I guess I’ve probably been able to add 7 - 10 layers before going on top with dry pigment once the underlying layers are dry. If I know in advance that I’ll be wanting to use a lot of watercolour (or ink) for base coats etc then I work on pastelmat board instead of pastelmat paper. Having said that I’ve never ruined a piece of pastelmat paper even when applying a lot of wet layers. Just use light layers and let each layer dry before adding the next. If you want to speed up the drying process then dry your painting with a hairdryer on a light to medium setting, and don’t hold to close to your paper’s surface. No apologies needed for your questions - that’s what friends are for. Stay safe & stay creative xXx

I have a couple of these that were given to me from an art room that was closing. Ive never used them and they are probably fifteen to twenty years old. Ive never used soft pastels at all so thank you for your tutorial! its very helpful and informative.

Hi there Korrina thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to leave such encouraging feedback - truly appreciated. If you've never used pastels before then the set of these that you already have are a great starting point. They're right in the middle (not as soft as say Unison, but not as hard as brands such as Conte). Have a play around with some different surfaces ie textured water colour paper, sanded paper, velour and pastelmat, and then choose your preference thereafter. If you need any help please feel free to ask. Stay safe and stay creative xXx

@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist thank you Kerry. I have done very little since i had no idea how to start. I found the hard pastel to chalky and didn't like how they felt to touch. Most of the soft pastels i was given, i donated to a school and only kept a handful. some were the Koh-I-Noor and a black Holbein one. I went out and got some Sennelier. they were expensive and I have no idea how to use them. They are still just sitting in there box looking pretty. They are skin tones mainly. Would you be interested in doing a tutorial on those?

Would you consider these a medium softness, like Rembrandt?

Hi there thank you for your question - yes they are indeed a medium softness giving an extremely smooth application. Very much like Rembrandt pastels.

Thanks for sharing this beatiful project and explaining so well how to use these pastels. I'm thinking of buying them but I'm wondering which ones, the soft pastels you are using here or the extra soft ones. Which ones would you recommend? Thanks!
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment, truly appreciated. Regarding your question - if you’re new to pastels I’d recommend these ones as they can be used in so many different ways. Pastels that are softer than these have limited application techniques and fill the tooth of the paper faster, hence less layers can be applied (not ideal if you’re just getting started). I hope this information is useful for you. Stay safe & stay creative xXx
