Thank you. I know there are a great number of tropical fruit tree growers in your region. In many respects, your region is prime for the growing of tropical fruit trees as your winters are mild, however, your summers can be a bit brutal.

Amdro works great for me . I first eliminated 2 red ant colonies . Now it gets rid of the ants that work with aphids on citrus and persimmon trees...

That’s awesome. Same results here as well. Amdro isn’t really powder, it’s more like bread crumbs that you sprinkle near the colony of the ants. Although it’s not technically an organic solution, I’ve not had any other beneficial insects bothered by Amdro. It really does only appear to impact ants.

@@lofenoialof5320 I think I read its treated corn meal . I seen it wipe out colonies in 2 or 3 days . I had 2 separate red ant colonies that had them sending out scouts everywhere looking for food , especially on the patio . I put it all over the main holes and it got the queen and entire colony

Thank you. Once your longan tree gets established, it’ll live close to 1,000 years. It’ll have plenty of time to produce fruits for you.

I also have a kohala longan and it has fruited and your right it is very delicious and productive. Here in coastal San Diego i don't have the ant problem you have. I do agree with what you have saif about it.

That’s awesome. Sometimes seeds are the only option if air layered/grafted trees are unavailable. The 10 years I quoted was specific to my climate. In a more favorable climate closer to their native region, from seeds, they may produce fruits in 6 years.

You have three varieties of longan. Which variety is producing fruit in your area ??? Also, is any of your lychee trees producing fruit yet ? I also have kahalo, sri chompoo, biew kiew varieties growing in Paso Robles Zone 8b-9 elevation 2,000. My kahalo should be producing fruit this year🤞 I also have lychee growing in container & in ground. Will do video if they produce fruits.

The Kohala has been consistently producing fruits. The Sri Chompoo and Biew Kiew flowers, but have yet to set fruit, which I’m okay with. This means the trees are simply establishing their root and overall growth (needed to survive the climate). My two grafted lychee, Kaimana and Brewster have yet to produce fruits. Just like some of my longan, I much prefer they focus on their root and overall growth.

How do you not have any grass growing on the ground? I see that you have a healthy mulch layer. I constantly have to hand pull grass in bunches, year round. I believe that the grass takes lots of nutrients away from my fruit trees. Thank you!

I do. One of my neighbor’s grass keeps growing into my yard. The only option for me is to continue to pull them as I see them.

It sounds like your region may be just a bit too cold. Have you tried container growing them and sheltering it during the cold?

They can, though they may not thrive. That’s not to say they won’t produce fruits. Mine had been able to fruit even in mostly shade.

Thinking of planting a longan in San Jose. How well do these do in partial sun and how far away from other trees should it be planted?

All of mine have been able to take full day sun as well as partial sun. Mine is planted about 1 foot away from other trees.

Just bought and planted a Kohala last month and then I learned about the Biew Kiew, do you think the Biew Kiew is superior other than larger fruit size?

Personally, from the perspective of taste, I can’t tell them apart. There’s a great consensus from online users that says the Biew Kiew is very slightly tastier. I personally have Sri Champoo, Biew Kiew and Kohala longan varieties and all tastes great. Specific to the Biew Kiew longan trees though, they grow quick. They’re one of the faster growing longan varieties.

I think this is where many would disagree with you. Specific to the fruits, it is due to the extreme swing in temperature.
