"Blue cards are all overpowered" Yugioh Ritual monsters; "Why do you hate me daddy?" EDIT; Yes links are blue, but not all blue yugioh cards are links. And YES there have been a couple of good ritual archetypes, but those were short lived until very recently when rituals all got a couple of massive playmakers that were designed to fix ritual monsters with very strong search effects.

While I haven't seen the original japanese anime, the English translation was done in a gag style (think lilttle Kuriboh's Yu-gi-oh abridged) & made references to tropes in other shows like yu-gi-oh while using its own card game. The Duel Masters card game itself is actually a simplified version of MTG (allowing any card to be used as mana rather than dedicate deck space to lands). Imo the game was cool, but the anime didn't promote or explain it well.

After four years it's still an inspiring and unique talk, thank you for that! Duel Masters is still alive even if it's dead now for more than 15 years. We have an active and solid community in Germany still playing, collecting and trading since the beginning and are happy to be able to upload deck profiles, discussion videos and matches on our channel (German Duel Masters) until today. It's definitely my favourite game and we will be on track for more years. Thanks for your talk anf cheers from Germany, Loui

I know this video is 4 years old but im only finding it now and need to clarify some things: You were correct in that Kaijudo introduced a Crush block but it was NOT the set with corrupted in them, it actually came a full year earlier with dragonstrike infernus, a set that was so infamously and admittedly by WOTC themselves undertested, that one set alone is what made WOTC need to implement a set rotation otherwise the game would never get past some of the absurdly powerful cards like herald of infernus, andromeda of the citadel, and lyra the blazing sun to name a few. Corrupted cards were dick on the ground terrible, and the only successful corrupted decks in the games history was a BW tempo deck that had maybe 12 corrupted cards total. Literally NO ONE threw out their collections due to corrupted coming out, theyre terrible. Also as an aside, the glaring issue with the TV show wasn't that the writing was awful (which it was) the issue was that it didn't make you want to buy cards! Nothing in that show even remotely implied that there was a card game associated with the show, so the whole goal WOTC had of capturing the younger demographic and getting them into card games was completely lost. Add this to the fact that the show was only played on hasbro's exclusive cable TV channel which almost no one watches and the fact that they sunk literally millions marketing that show INSTEAD OF THE GAME and yea no wonder the game flopped.
@torondin
@torondin 4 жыл бұрын
Ironically the fact that it wasn't just *"Hey you! Look at these card! You want to buy them! Buy buy buy!"* was one of the things I actually liked about Kaijudo oddly enough, that and the fact they focused upon the lore of their own game rather than tournaments (ironically if the original Duel Masters manga did that, there might not have been a Duel Masters card game, it would have stayed an MTG Manga.)

@@heroprime7599 2 simple reasons. First, the MLP fanbase is ravenous. They will seek out and follow the show to that network, but very few people START looking for show on said network. Secondly, just because a show is popular doesnt mean it is being watched on television or even on its legal streaming service. Tons of people in all fandoms want to watch a show but dont want to pay for cable so they just sail the 7 seas in some form.

@@stencetheboss Actually, the reason the Hub is known for is the MLP cartoon. Apparently, when word came out it was actually good, people jumped into it, but they basically remained exclusively with MLP and Transformers Prime (which was also out at that time), ignoring things like Kaijudo because of that.

The reason Ray was getting away with breaking the rules is because the rules were stupid and wrong. One of the main rules was to not interact with the creatures. Not to form a bond with them. Ray and his friends were better masters BECAUSE they formed a bond with their creatures. Ray and his friends befriended the creatures while the old masters subjugated theirs. They didn't go as far as the Choten, but they were doing wrong. Over time, the other masters started forming bonds with their creatures. Only one master stayed resolute in his belief that the old rules had to be followed. Guess what, he became a villain.

After sitting through this entire 25-minute video, I agreed with some of your points. However, I want to talk about a few things you mentioned in your video, and some other stuff as well. First off, the story about someone getting trapped in one of the civilizations did happen, just... not in the TV show. One of the Kaijudo Masters getting stuck in the Nature Civilization was an important event in the third block of the Trading Card Game. Secondly, the Corrupted cards, from what I recall, nobody really liked all that much. I still remember how one guy said that he hated playing at the Set Premiere for Invasion Earth (the set they debuted in) because the Corrupted cards essentially forced you to run Water in your deck. Despite this, however, they certainly weren't the driving force behind Kaijudo's death. My honest opinion is that a lack of promotion on WotC's part is what led to the game's demise. I remember WotC making one (*ONE!*) commercial for the game, and that was when Rise of the Duel Masters came out, which was in September of 2012, nearly two years before Kaijudo died. To make it worse, they didn't even add a small 10-second blurb at the end of every episode that said "There's a card game for this too, buy some!" I still remember how, in Kaijudo's final months, a Kaijudo Master Challenge, supposedly the "big tournaments" in the game, had only fifteen players show up. One guy (unrelated to the other guy) made a Facebook post about how players looking for another card game to get into would take a look at Kaijudo and its 15-player "massive tournaments" and choose not to invest in it, thanks in part to the poor promotion. I think I've ragged on long enough about Wizards' pisspoor promotion, so let's move on. Thirdly, and my last, and least important, complaint: the Kaijudo Code. Me, being a mere four years hold when DM hit the States, was too young to be enamored with the Kaijudo Code in the way that you were. But thankfully, Kaijudo didn't need the Kaijudo Code. Every time I went to a tournament, I had a great time and met a ton of amazing people. At my first tournament (which I went to when I was 12), it was a Kaijudo Master Challenge with 59 players, the largest KMC at that time. They also previewed a card from the next set that was due to be released at the event, and it was amazing. I met a KZbinr known as The Kaijudo Channel, whom I admired, at the event, so that was a plus. In addition, the people that made the game interviewed me at the tournament, they made a video of the tournament that they uploaded to their KZbin channel (the link is kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqGcmYqAfpmIb8U), which I appear in at 1:19. My hand is also in the video at 2:21. So yeah, fun time. The fact that I still remember it just one day shy of being four years ago is just amazing. I only ever had a problem with one person, which I solved by simply blocking them on Facebook, and I haven't dealt with them since. They're still blocked, too, almost three years later. The fanbase for Kaijudo is something that I'm glad I was a part of. Everyone was always super nice (save for that aforementioned blocked guy), and no one had to worry about getting mugged for powerful cards like YGO fans do or getting murdered for powerful cards like MTG fans do. Overall, Kaijudo was something that I'm glad I was a part of. Kaijudo will forever hold a special place in my heart, just like Duel Masters holds a place in yours. My only regret with Kaijudo (besides the marketing) was the fact that Kaijudo never got Cross Gears. I would have loved to have played with Cross Gears in my Kaijudo days. Unfortunately, the difference between you and me was that while you were able to find some TCGs that you liked after DM died, I never got back into TCGs after Kaijudo died. I still remember that I was crushed when my dad told me that WotC had decided to end Kaijudo. Even now, four years later, if you look around my room, you can see all my old Kaijudo stuff. Kaijudo's death left a void in my heart that I guess I replaced with food? Looking at my 12-year-old self made me realize I'd forgotten how much slimmer I was back then (like, 10% slimmer). And I also had braces back then, which I forgot about. What was my point here? Oh yeah, the video. I countered some of the stuff you said in it. We both love this game, although we grew up with different iterations of it. Me and you really aren't so different after all, are we?

I know I'm a year late but I was so down when the game was cancelled. I really wanted to play competitively and I can assure you, the only reason I knew the game existed was because it was.mentioned on the Duel Masters wiki (I keep up with the game despite not owning any of the products). I had to purchase every card I ever owned (and I'm still buying cards now) from The East Coast. No shop in San Diego sold it, and sure there may have been tourneys in San Fran, but there was Damn near no marketing for the game. I legitimately love the game so much that in addition to providing for my life, I'd like to buy the IP some day (if it ever becomes feasible)

It's funny you mention being too young to be enamored by the code. I was too, then I found a dual constructed set at a garage sale the dude didmt even know he had, so he gave it to me. This was YEARS after the game was dead. So i became enamored with something that was never going to live again, and it still sticks with me to this day. When Kaijudo came out and lacked the code, it actually turned me off a fair bit since the show had the perfect setting for it to thrive. Such wasted potential.

The death of Kaijudo left a void in my heart as well. For a card game that was complex but with plenty of interaction both ways, that respected the lore in a way that made it feel like you were actually a person summoning these creatures. I moved on to Force of Will (which I left a year ago cause it lost its soul) and am now straight up making my own card game since nothing like Kaijudo or Duel Masters exists.

20:45 The Kaijudo code. A montra that I keep on my dresser to remind me how I should approach games. I was sincerely shocked when the game Kaijudo came out and ditched it, despite the fact the code would fit perfectly with the new premise of the show and game. The one I have was from the Light and Dark Duel Masters tin instruction booklet. I've carried that thing for around 13 years I wager....probably less. But that little paper rag is still one of the only objects I hold dear, just because it has a genuine strong message. Wizards is pathetic for not putting effort and that code into the show. They could have had something really special.

Talking about this game again has made me want to go and find the GBA game I had of it years ago, lol. I didn't even play the game, although I had a few cards from things like McDonald's promos. But one day, my family and I went to the store, and my brother and I decided to wait in the car. When my parents came back out, they had a Duel Masters game on GBA that they gave to me. I guess it was on sale or something, lol. I remember feeling weirded out and thinking something along the lines of, "Do my parents really think I'm into this??". But I was smart enough to say thanks and try it out. So glad I did, because it was actually super fun. The card game itself is fun, but the video game kind of turned it into an RPG akin to the Pokemon TCG on Gameboy or Magic: Shandalar on PC where beating opponents would win you new cards, so you could slowly upgrade your starter deck and eventually build a completely new one. There were three DM games on the GBA, and they got better with each release. Avoid the first game like the plague, but Shadow of the Code is the best one, IMHO. I'm not sure if there were ever any other DM games... I think I recall seeing a PS2 game back in the day, but I was 100% a Nintendo kid, so I wouldn't have been able to try it.

And they're not just about fighting, it's Rothus the *Traveler* not warrior or fighter or anything. It's such a humble name for such a cool, outright violent-looking design. Also I don't understand you saying the Duel Masters show bombed, I freaking loved that when I was a kid. I mean, I know the later seasons that had a new cast were bad, but the original? It's really a shame this game didn't do so well here. I still enjoy playing both duel masters and kaijudo with my friends. Luckily kaijudo products are incredibly cheap right now, so my friends are able get get a few booster boxes for cheap. I also enjoyed the corrupted creatures. When I played back before it died I was literally the only person in my play group that built a 4 civilization corrupt deck. It didn't do so well but I still loved it. I never had a problem with other players. we were all respectful to each other.

You missed a fun and awesome 2 years. On a side note, Corruption had very little to do with its death and very little impact on the meta of the game. What set its death in motion was the premature release of the set Dragonstrike Infernus, which was actually supposed to come a year later.

They moved it ahead of schedule cause WotC/Hasbro had set up a deal with Walmart. And guess what sells? Dragons! The set featured Dragons. But, anyway, this is one of the many mismanaged decisions WotC made during Kaijudo's run.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I fully realise Kaijudo isn’t for everyone, I disagree with several things he said about the show, specifically that Ray is a “Mary Sue” character. 1st issue: He got the definition of a Mary Sue wrong, I’ll attempt to explain but if you want a more concise answer check out OverlySarcasticProductions Trope talk on Mary Sues. Anyway, calling Ray a Mary Sue because he’s more proficient in Kaijudo than most is a gross oversimplification of what a Mary Sue does; they remove the need for other characters to be present to solve specific issues because the character is “amazing in every possible way” and “does all of their jobs better than they could themselves”. Ray never does this even once. Yes, he is better at Summoning and bonding with creatures, has way more Mana than the average duelist and is a great fighter, but that is where his skill set stops. He‘s reckless and charges into battle, more often than not landing him in trouble which his friends need to help bail him out of danger. Gabe is a far better strategist than Ray while Allie is much more cunning, both bail him out of situations he lands himself into. He consistently looses to Master Brightmore (as he does in the second episode of the series!), the master most avid about sticking to the “rules” of Kaijudo. If he where a Mary Sue, he would never need Allie or Gabe to strategise plans or smooth talk them out of situations, and he would beat Brightmore every time without fail. The reason Rey is played up as “The Natural” in the first three episodes is because he can summon and command creatures far more easily than Allie or Gabe can, and fights better than them because he works well with Tatsurion, his signature Kaiju. Allie and Gabe don’t have signature creatures until later, which is why they’re not nearly as competent as he is during battle. It’s like an RPG team, Rey is the Tank/Fighter, Allie is the Rouge/Glass Cannon, and Gabe is the Wizard/Strategist. Also, the reason the kids are “better” than the Masters (which isn’t true as the Masters constantly have to bail them out of trouble and the kids loose to them often during practice) is because the Masters aren’t duelling to their fullest potential, they use their creatures instead of working with them, taking up time ordering their creatures instead of working together to take down their opponent. Most of them eventually adopt the kids techniques and become far better for it. 2nd Issue: Rey is not a poorly written character by any means. A Mary Sue is blatantly catering to the audience and is perfect in every way, no flaws or quirks that could be seen as unfavourable. Rey has a balance of good and bad qualities: Pro.) he is kind hearted and moral, Con.) he is easy to manipulate and trick. Pro.) He’s a natural at Summoning and working with creatures, Con.) This leads him to become reckless and charge into battle’s he’s not prepared for. Pro.) Is deeply empathetic and cares for others, Con.) He is easy to anger and frequently makes rash decisions in order to correct injustice or save a friend. Rey gradually learns to minimise or work past these issues in the series, and constantly faces issues that challenge his ideals and force him to make hard calls. An example: Carney, Rey’s main bully in the first episode, constantly insults Rey’s mixed race heritage and pushes Rey too far, so Rey goes to his house and summons his creature to teach Carney a lesson. What happens? Rey finds out that Carney’s father is an asshat, which is why Carney is the way he is, promptly gets himself and his creature trapped when it turns out Carney’s father works for the bad guys, and gets sucked into the creature realm WITH Carney and now has to protect his bully with a weakened creature and no means of getting home. How does it end? Rey and Carney work together to stay alive, leading Rey to believe Carney can change for the better, so when they return home he lets Carney go without wiping his memory in hopes he’ll become an ally. However, Carney instead goes to work for the big bad, and becomes one of Rey’s enemies both at school and during battle. So no, Rey isn’t a Mary Sue, not even close. He’s not all powerful and he isn’t badly written or doesn’t undergo character development. Sorry for the rant and not to come off as rude, but I can’t stand someone making such a blanket statement on a show I really like. If you don’t like Kaijudo, fine, no one is forcing you to, but don’t go handwaving it for everyone else when you’ve clearly only watched a few episodes. You can’t rate a series without seeing it in full. Aside from that, interesting video, very informative.

I was honestly surprised DDW was what you called Buddyfight's Crush Block. Buddyfight definitely did have a Crush Block in from August 2015 to January 2016 to expand design space. Despite the DDW hype, it ended up being a pretty subpar deck for a year, despite their powerful mechanics because they were on really weak cards. Didn't get anything viable until Purgatory Knights. You would've hated Kaizerion.

On a more relevant note: I never played much DM or Kaijudo, but I absolutely love the mechanics, and it sucked seeing it so mismanaged so much and get it killed again. If only WOTC was capable of managing a non-MTG card game.

@@Yinyanyeow There is a ton. Neo Pets, Harry Potter, Simpsons and GI Joe off the top of my head for just licensed games, though GI Joe technically isn't licensed since it's a brand from their parent. They had a game engine they used in ARC system, which had Xena and Hercules sets. Then there is all the old Richard Garfield games like Netrunner and Vampire: The Eternal Struggle. Wizards is like a graveyard for failed games.

man, Duel Masters seems so interesting. i remember some cards being released here in Brazil in the late 2000s, after it had already been dropped from production in north america. Kaijudo just never seemed as interesting because by the time it came around the "cardgame anime" fever from YGO had already passed, at least in here, since it took years for YGO GX to start airing here after the original anime ended despite the rest of the world being able to watch it. when it finally came around, it killed Bakugan, Kaijudo and any other cardgame animes that were airing before and/or around the same time. with Kaijudo being cable tv exclusive, it never really had a chance at all
