That introductory video is all the proof you need to know this isn’t a Disney product, it’s a licensed cash grab made by a jigsaw company. It just feels so rare that a TCG, either physical or digital, survives for all that long when it’s made by a company that’s licensing the IP from someone else. If Disney wanted this to work, they have the ability to make it in house, but they don’t actually care, so why should anyone who likes their characters and worlds care either?

One day a company is going to introduce a starter product that has tournament ready decks with full playsets and rules that are both engaging and respectful to the players intelligence. It won't be disney.
@Ms666slayerКүн бұрын
In Yugioh a lot of structure decks were buy 3 for 10 each and you have am actual tournament winning deck some of them like Dinnosaurs and Monarch didn't even needed anything else, with dinnosaurs maybe you could buy 3 Ash Blossom but that would be the only thing and you really didn't need them, but the problem is that none of the structure decks have instuctions of how to play, because those are meant for already experienced players.

how about Pokemon Battle decks? they're gym battle friendly
@havenfractal18 сағат бұрын
I recently got my nephew into Magic. As I was considering what decks to bring next time I visit, I realized that I _don't_ want to bring my super-powerful souped up tournament level decks. I want to bring the decks from Game Night. They have less consistency, which means more variety - I'll get to show him more flavor over a longer game. They have less 'crazy' cards: no adventures, no planeswalkers, no 2-faced cards, and they instead stick to simpler mechanics like "dragons cost less" or equipment: things that are still fun, but won't require as much stretching to understand during the game. This doesn't mean the decks are boring or weak, just that they're simpler. With this as my example, I'm not sure that tournament products and intro products have the same goals, so I'm not sure if it's possible to build a single product that can do both.

They all felt so interchangeable In contrast, Pokemon's art is really cool and something I really respect about it, They are many art styles and a lot of personality in every pack. It feels like every card is unique and cool, even if they are bad in the game. The full arts especially are always full of personality and are really unique, which is something I can't say about Lorcana

Now look, I will defend the art of lorcana valiantly because they do a lot with environment and atmosphere toning to have the cards be potencies with their given color despite dealing with pre-made characters, the stitch cards are wonderful examples. In fact I actually do like how they don't shoehorn characters into specific colors for color coding. Genie is primarily in green and purple because he fits the themes of those colors more (green being tricky and adaptive and purple being mystical and magical), and I heavily respect that as someone who's both a little tired of fantasy realism and splashy pin-ups surrounded in visual noise. Now with all that aside, this is some haughty-ass behavior on their part, and i think this overconfidence leads them to neglect so much else about the game. Like, their onboarding products suck, so many of their starter decks are anemic, lack a clear game plan, and start top decking real quick thanks to how much they lack in card draw (and I won't get into the bigger issue with the game's stinginess about card draw unless it's amethyst). And I feel like what they're trying to do here is just way to hand-holdy while also not telling enough about the game. Like honestly, I've been working on a lorcana equivalent to MTG's jumpstart where you take a pair of single color half decks and combine them into a single working deck and play games with them, and I think that would be a far better angle for an onboarding product. The decks I've worked out stay at a Max Ink cost of 4 to 5 and are more focused on Main mechanics of each color and how they can come together to make a playable deck. Anyways, all that is to say that ravensburger can do so much better, but like game freak and the Pokemon company, I think they get too cozy with their brand recognition, and just operate on this mentality that they'll make money regardless so whatever.

Starter decks actually go quite quickly in my area for Lorcana. Except the older than 6 months ones. A lot of the player in my area pick up at least 1 copy of each starter deck as they come out. I started playing Lorcana a couple months ago and I like it a lot more than Magic. And we get more turn out than Standard, Modern, or Pioneer in my area. And those Ursula things are sold out completely. Every game store in BC is sold out (to my knowledge). I had to order mine from like Montreal so I could get the components for a brooms deck at a cheaper price than TCG player. Gateways are full of staples that can be hard to find and I love the fact I started with the gateway for better access to those cards.

Apparently they have already listened to my advice once before, with how they changed the Illumineer's Trove into its current version based on exactly what I said to them at Toy Fair 2023. And this? It should be redesigned as a product for EVERYBODY, not just new players. The Pokemon Battle Academy's hard board is desirable to many players who want a quick and sturdy setup. I said it here, but removing the Lore tracker from the middle of the board and improving the Token Sheet to include Status Tokens and lore dials you put together (Loads of games have dials on the token board these days) so even an experienced player will look at it as a good purchase. Also, obviously, to cool it on the ego.

This boxset and that tutorial just seems like a perfect microcosm of everything wrong with this game. Just another poorly planned out piece of corporate slop dressed up with Disney's typical brand of self important, ego stroking brand prestige. I wouldn't be shocked if this game did succumb to the 2-year curse, and just end up just being another blunder consigned to the dustbin of both Disney, and TCG history. If Lorcana does end up being remembered for anything, it should be seen right next to Redakai as a cautionary tale on what can go wrong in planning your TCG. In this case, what happens when you rely too heavily on name brand recognition to cary your game. This game is like Icarus; it flew too close to the sun, only to end up burning in the flames of it's own huburis.

Say what you will about the quality of the game, but last I've heard, it's still been selling like hotcakes in the US. The Disney adult demographic really is the perfect group to market a TCG to. They generally have disposable income, they are willing to dispose of said income, and they clearly don't care about partaking in something most people would think of as immature or childish.

Yup. Another TCG that couldn't survive to the two-year mark. What a shame Ravensburger botched this up so badly - with the Disney IP behind it, it could have been an EASY contender for the Top 3, but it's always so easy to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when they prioritize collectors over players.

The thing with lorcana is the only offer ONE type of gameplay, they are pretty much copying early magic,wich i'm totally fine with,they need a competitor for the longest time, what Lorcana isn't doing is giving us different ways toplay like example magic's tribal style, with lorcana i was like YES!! i willmake a Ariel tribal deck, but there aren't enough cards of the same colour of ariel to fill an entire deck, not even if i include ursula. Lorcana is releaseing the same cards just in a different vacation type setting instead of making sure there is enough variation, digimon got stamped out of the tcg world pretty fast and i feel the only reason peopel are buying lorcana is because it is disney and nothign much else really. i enjoyed the first few sets i cought everythigni could spend allot of money doing so thinking yes my way to get backinto tcg at an even playing field with everybody else but nobody really played after set 2 people only cameto our gamestore to collect or to resell the cards if they pulled a expensive one...lame. Lorcana needsa new colour and the colours to be more defined in their unique playstyle because with the latest set it all feels exactly the same that its boring...people buy the meta cards build the exact samedeck i don't even play when i see another meta deck...

One thing I dislike about Lorcana that I haven't heard anyone else say is that it has too much potential and too little of it is used. One Piece and Pokemon are each one property, but Lorcana is all of Disney (discounting Star Wars and Marvel), however all I see is the animated legacy characters. Imagine they had the Nome King or Homer Simpson for cards. That would bring in way more people and give me a bigger reason as to why I should play a Disney game: that being they are buying from Disney who own everything. But Disney would never do something like that, because the Simpsons, Return to Oz, etc. are either too obscure or aren't family friendly enough to be universally marketed. This seems to be the problem with Disney as a whole recently. Why make something new or something risky when you own the Lion King, and Moana, and Frozen. Making sequels to them or carbon copies (see Wish) warrants zero risk as opposed to making something new with a unique story, characters, and subject matter, which could fail. It's sad to see this unoriginality spread to even licensed products. I guess the fish really does rot from the head.
