Another quick video while I work on the next one. After rambling about something completely unrelated for the first half of the video, I talk a little more about "The Two Year Curse", an affliction unique to games that see a lot of initial success...

That's not quite how the lessons worked. In order to play a spell, you had to have a number of lessons equal to the spell's cost, and at least one of your lessons had to match the type of the spell you're playing. This did introduce some interesting options. For example, Professor Mcgonagall was a wizard who game you a free Transfiguration lesson. If she was your starting character, you could get away with not running any transfiguration lessons in your deck and run spells of 3 different types without having to worry about getting the right type of lessons to much.

The 2 year curse reminds me of the natural progression of TV shows where most shows want to exceed 2 seasons, but it can be tough to know whether that's pushing the concept too far or not. Definitely depends on the genre and it actually has the opposite tendency where the longest living shows tend to enter an established formula after three seasons

Yu-Gi-Oh! does have some lore that's not based on the show (Duel Terminal), but not having flavor text on the cards that people actually play really hurts the potential for lore to spread. It's kind of a shame, because the Duel Terminal story seems interesting, just wish it wasn't told exclusively through card art.

Magic doesn't seem interested in returning to Arabian Nights - Mark Rosewater uses the Rabiah Scale to measure how likely they are to return to a world, named after Rabiah (the retconned setting of Arabian Nights) as a world they really don't expect to re-visit. As for Pokémon, BW-era also introduced ACE SPEC Trainers, and XY-era did M-Pokémon EX and BREAK. SM had GX and Prism Star, and the current one is V/Vmax.
@firekram

The main reason they won't go back to Rabiah is that it's a straight copy of the source material, odds are pretty good that we will see a "new" Arabinan nights inspired plane, where Zarddenonn lives instead of Aladdin

Regarding yugioh I think the anime being successful really helped it out at the beginning because those intro sets all had normal monsters or basis spell/trap cards. Now everything is an effect monster (or extra deck monster) and archetype based spell/traps. Some cards from back then are still useful (staples that are reprinted nowadays) but the card game now is actually probably more complex than magic or Pokémon is. I think the anime really helps people get into it and learn the different mechanics for sure.
@RyanAtlus
@RyanAtlus 4 жыл бұрын
In hindsight, I think the anime might have actually done it harm in the long run. People who say they enjoyed playing Yugioh only really liked the cartoon where they shot dragons into castles using catapults and completely dismiss the game as it is right now because 'it wasn't like than when they played", but seem to be unaware that Yugioh back then was completely different than how they remembered it.
@cohenmarioman
@cohenmarioman 4 жыл бұрын
RyanAtlus this is extremely untrue. The game really expanded during the Battle City arc of the anime which changed to the real life rules with very little exceptions. The anime has kept going (GX, 5Ds, Zexal, Arc V. Vrains, Sevens) because the card game has continued to get new life from it.

In argentina we used to have this tcg called Inferno. It was a dirt cheap game, like, a whole booster box would be around 30usd, 50usd tops. It really caught up. Then it implemented a really hard set rotation. They changed card backs, card materials and just rendered all cards useless. They tried a kind of eternal format but it just died at that point. 2 years, a bit more maybe but man, I miss those og sets

@deviaan
@deviaan 3 жыл бұрын
They seem to be aimed at and more popular with the Board Game crowd than the CCG/TCG crowd in my experience, and from that context it does make some sense. They are "living" because they receive regular expansions, which most board games don't have, and those expansions are not sold in randomized packs, which most card games do so calling it a TCG/CCG wouldn't work. I don't know if that makes it the best choice of words, but it always made sense to me. It's also important to remember that "LCG" is a Fantasy Flight trademark (I think WotC used to have TCG?). UDE got in trouble for using the term on the branding for their VS System Relaunch a few years back. The other name for the same concept I've heard was "ECG - Expandable Card Game" which was used by AEG for Doomtown: Reloaded. Ultimately they're just marketing terms to denote the difference in distribution strategies.

Really hoping Bakugan doesn’t fall into the two year curse. It’s such a great game, I want it to do well but with distribution issues the amount of time it’s taken to get lgs support, and then just the awful timing of the pandemic right when it seemed like things started moving towards dealing with these issues and giving tournament play the support the fanbase desperately wanted. And as you stated in the video the gameplay aspect they are doing things right the game is ambitious trying new things and expanding while not breaking the game, it would just really suck if it was squandered due to issues not even relating to the game itself.

@@Yinyanyeow that's exactly my point. It's such an integral part of the game that you can't remove it, but it's also the biggest thing holding the game back. The rolling system isn't consistent enough to be a real strategic element. It's not much better than just rolling dice. And most high level players hate random mechanics like that. And on top of that, you have to carry around the damn things. And you have to protect them somehow. And let's not forget the cost. They ain't cheap. It's a whirlwind of bad design. The game is completely fucked. It's only a matter of how long it can stay on life support.

I remember this game! I remember the original Hermione Granger was *SUPREMELY* busted. As soon as you had four lessons down (probably by bottom of turn 2), you could put down two lessons for a single action. That led to some insane speed from Hermione decks that just ran over everybody else. I ran a Magical Creature / Transfiguration deck that played out tons of creatures really fast and instantly knocked out other creatures. It was pretty nuts. Nothing my brother could build could take it reliably.

I feel like if you want to seriously engage with different ways of making card games, the LCG business model deserves more than a roll of your eyes. Since Netrunner, an easy majority of relatively succesful CCGs have used the LCG model over randomised booster packs - Netrunner being the most obvious example, but also Arkham Horror and FFG's Game of Thrones and LotR games, as well as L5R (though I'm not sure how succesful that has been). It just seems very odd to try and talk about "how to make a succesful trading card game" without acknowledging that step one should be to ask whether or not your design even should be a TCG to begin with, when other business models have proved to be far easier to have success with. (other options that you haven't mentioned include the unique deck system of keyforge, and the 'boardgame' approach of something like 'ashes: rise of the phoenixborn")

Yeah, this is seriously worth discussing. Card games don't need to be implemented as CCGs, and the various possible models all have advantages and disadvantages worth thinking about. For example, FFG's Living Card Game model is a lot better for competitive players, as the cost to be keep up competitively is tiny, being a few hundred for a complete collection, compared to Magic's few hundred for a single deck; but it does have a very real problem of being harder to approach as a casual player, as you can't just buy a bundle of boosters, or play some draft to get into the game, and grow your collection over time.
@Heardmore
@Heardmore 4 жыл бұрын
The problem is that we haven't yet seen any LCG really breaking the 4-5 years curse (which would be equivalent to 2 years curse on a game releasing cards slowlier). This is partly due to FFG strategy but there is most likely limits to the model as well.
@Ceighk
@Ceighk 4 жыл бұрын
@@Heardmore i'm not arguing with that - i'm just saying it's pretty dumb to do a whole video series on card games without even acknowledging any of the games that don't conform to a certain fairly outdated model of what a card game should look like
@Quargos
@Quargos 4 жыл бұрын
@@Heardmore From my experience playing Netrunner, I seriously don't think that the model really changes the way that the 2 year curse behaves; and am pretty confident that the main reason that no LCG has survived rotation yet is that FFG waited quite a bit too long to initiate rotation, alongside other design issues led to power creep problems that were just starting to rear their heads after the first rotation, when FFG dropped the game, presumably due to a licensing issue. There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to the model, but an impact on how it behaves in relation to rotation and the two-year-curse is not one of them.

Android Netrunner saw this in their final years. LotR LCG keeps pumping because solo can just get stuff and play without their opponent dominating for meta reasons. It's on its third publisher (Sabertooth, then Fantasy Flight, now Jasco) and still going, starting in 2006 as UFS: Universal Fighting System. They recently got the license to My Hero Academia, and we're just waiting for Covid to end so they can release that set. Their contract with Toho says they can't unless they can also hold events. Right now they're talking about another Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat set because they have leftover art from the miniatures game they're doing.

I do have some thoughts on yugioh with how it particularly did innovation in the early years outside of Japan. It was a bit slow to its archetype game, but they did try innovation early, sometimes more subtly then others even if a lot of them wasn't good for tourny play. If you look at the 3rd set spell ruler, you see this is the first set ritual monsters came out in, an attempt at what actually was an archetype in toons (horrible attempt) and the first set to release quick play spell cards. Then the set right after that, Pharaohs servant introduced a lot of things not in the game before. They provided unique continuous effects like Jinzo and thousand eye restrict but also made more cards like gravity bind that help support non beatdown strategies. It wasn't as big as later innovation in the game though once they start making different color card types or even just archetypes before 5ds because with them there always became the idea of how you use or summon with each mechanic vs can you draw a spell card for rituals and with fusions not being that good overall for a while and being in the first set.

Homelands is almost universally considered the worse set ever. Incredibly dull and underpowered cards, mechanics that didn't interact with any other card in the set, etc. Barring Homelands from the discussion, Fallen Empires and Mercadian Masques are contenders. Masques in and of itself was not terrible, but when juxtaposed against Urza's block, it was too far a departure from MTG at point. MTG needed to downshift, but Masques took it too far, sold very poorly, and lost them a lot of players at that time. I was one such player. I played heavily Tempest - Urza's block, then quit for several years with Masques.

@stevenglowacki8576
@stevenglowacki8576 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheShinyFeraligatr That's because Fallen Empires was ludicrously overprinted. Supposedly in response to the shortages stores experienced when ordering the first few sets, stores generally intentionally inflated their orders for FE which made WotC think they needed to print way more than people actually would buy, and finally was able to meet the supposed demand. I don't think the set overall was any weaker the the previous ones, with the exception being that the best cards were commons, which is a good explanation of how a set can be good but not sell massive amounts - people didn't need to buy massive amounts to get the good cards.

Homelands, FE, Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ixlan wasn't great. It is usually their De-power, or ultra-focused sets that screw stuff up. Too much theme sucks for tournament. Basically you can only do two things on your turn after you draw, like play a card or use a power on a card. Playing a Resource Card is an action, which is one of the reasons why it was a poor fit for Harry Potter, as it cut your action down to 1 if you alternated between resources and other cards.

I suppose Force of Will fell to the 2-year curse? Bummer. Political nonsense of Wizards aside, one other thing that made me enjoy Force of Will more than Magic was the redistribution of the resource system to its own deck, similar to what Hearthstone has, except you could skip a turn on drawing "mana" to put your commander into play. I get constantly screwed over by bad luck in Magic in terms of land draws, and before anyone says it, I've tweaked and adjusted lands in my decks til I'm blue in the face, and I still get screwed. In fact, I've had people use my own decks against me and they don't seem to get screwed at nearly the same rate I do *with the same decks*. It's just bad luck, and I like that Force of Will mitigates that. Oh well.

One of the issues with the Pokemon TCG in the early fays was that they continually made newer cards incompatible with newer cards. For instance, Erika's Vileplume could not evolve from Gloom. Only Erika's Gloom. I think there were some slight upsides, and, of course, you can use newer cards alongside older cards, but I think that was a mistake that they largely overcame. They haven't done something similar in a while, except for a few exceptions, like Radiant Pokemon, but that is a different story.

The irony is were it not because it was a show specifically designed to sell cards rather than a show based off the cards, it would've died out in the first two years because the bare bones of yugioh was just normal summon big beaters and trap/flip monster trolls. Tributing monsters was typically a waste of time unless they were big enough which even than mirror force and things meant you'd rather just consistently bring out level 4 beaters, fusion was at the time NOT worth a fuck and relegated into the same category as ritual where it was throwing around a bunch of card resources for nothing So basically it's first ever set had power creep where there was no reason to play Sango the dark butthole clown with 1300atk if genie the Arabic racist had 1800atk. As effects really weren't implemented yet because people didn't give a shit enough about the game to read off a buncha effects, nor did they want to implement hard mechanics like type disadvantage like they do for pokemon and did do in the original manga and anime adaptation because again, they didn't know if this would work

I would say no. Of the top three, one has deep, self contained lore (Magic), one has a wierd mix of self-contained lore and whatever the show is doing at the time (Yu-Gi-Oh), and one has no lore aside from whatever is else is going on in the franchise at the time (Pokemon). That being said, Magic didn't have any lore that went beyond the card-by-card level starting out, so of you are making a game and are wondering if you need to do some worldbuilding first, I say don't worry about it.

It is cool to innovate. Pokemon innovates by having a new region and new Pokemen every few years or so. The main place this occurs is the video games. That is the heart of the franchise. Then the trading card game gets new cards based on the new video games. Genwunners will whine and cry about the new Pokemon and the new games. Now I see that Nintendo did the right thing when I innovated with new games. It was healthier. The most radical one I played is the Sun and Moon video games. They did away with Pokemon gyms and replaced them with some kind of island challenge. I liked that. It was a breath of fresh air. As for Magic the Gathering, it is wierd. It get so freaking bizarre. I have seen a lot of fantasy worlds, because I am such a fantasy nerd. Magic the Gathering has the wierdest world by far. I think the only one that would be wierder is the Wonderland in Alice in Wonderland. That is the one that gets the hallucination jokes. The multiverse of Magic the Gathering is very delitgtful. I like the wierd twists and turns it goes through. It is a sanbox to imagine things. There is so much incredible and diverse world building. However there is enough constant rules so there isn't utter chaos. Planeswalkers are the only beings that can go to vastly different places. Each world is divided according to five colors. The first realm I got into was Ravnica. I thought it was the basic one. Later I learned that Dominaria was basic. I think of Ravnica as being the world that has a Game of Thrones Theme. I am not shure whether anyone else nothiced. Ravnica is totally like Game of Thrones. Both have a group of different factions with different symbols and values. Both set of factions go through war and political games to rule the world. Then there is so much more. Eldraine has a fairy tale theme. Theros has a Greek myth theme. Ikoria has a beast theme. Zenikar has a Lovecraft theme (At least I think it is. Zenikar has some terrifying eldrich abominations that look like they come from Lovecraft). Amonket has an Egyptian myth theme. Kaladesh looks like steam punk or science ficion, but prettier (if that makes sense). Innistrad is horror. Tarkir is Asian. That stuff is odd. Maybe I ought to step up my game for my own world building.

While the game had its pitfalls, the core was pretty fun and it had a lot of gameplay variety. It even started branching out really early with new mechanics. Mechanically it's not as "tournament ready" as pokemon, but considering the IP and fun mechanics it just seemed like it should have done slightly better. But my feelings are far from reality lol. Yo, so I’ve wanted to make a card game for a very long time. God Save the Queen. Each turn you may play 1 creature or monster card with no cost whatsoever other than what’s on the card, and you may play one action or ‘spell’ without a cost lest the card says so. All actions are ‘instant’ speed unless something states otherwise, so during your opponent’s turn you may also play one action. Your goal is to get your opponent’s life total to zero. You also have ‘Queens,’ which are like a field spell you start with that has abilities or static effects that can impact the game. Anyhow, those are the three kinds of cards. Creatures/monsters, actions, and queens. I’ve been stuck on like, what kinda life total one should have, and also the stats your average beater should have, creature with an awesome ability have... So like, do you have tips on figuring out not the mechanics or whatever but just the numbers?

I think the average beater power should be 1/4th or 1/5th of the life total like it is in magic or ygo, but that depends of how your combat works and how easy is to deal damage... And about the total life points, just choose an arbitrary number that you feel it'll work, at first, then test the game and adjust the number. That's what I'm going to do...
