A question on the pitch. More than 700 runs were scored. Spinners barely got wickets - but it did turn. Pacers got their movement under lights which is known behaviour at Mumbai. So tell me, could it just be that the best pitch was played? Was the fresh pitch not exactly good? End of the day, it was a really good pitch. So, if it’s only about “communication” then end it at that. Spending 15 mins saying the same thing over and over again, touching on BCCI’s overwhelming power in World Cricket. There was no real objectivity here. It’s the same old grouse. No wrong was done (as to the quality of the pitch and game), yet you keep playing the to the gantry. I expected better from Wisden tbh. Though, I’m sure you’re looking out for your own with Lawrence. Edit: Mr Booth is an ace journo but the idea that the pitch was changed to be a rank turner turned out to be bogus. 1 wicket by spinners in the match. Great batting wicket with enough for the seamers. It was a great wicket at the end of it all.

‘King’ Virat Kohli’s half-century Of Centuries In ODIs, And Still Counting… India was the best team in the league stage, ahead of all countries, by a country mile. It was overwhelmingly tipped to win this semi-final encounter, and it did. But, for the one and only King Virat to choose a grand occasion such as this to post his fiftieth century befits his stature. Breaking the great Sachin’s record in the match against Netherlands would have meant lacking a sense of occasion, and Kohli rises to the occasion in big matches. “Talent does what it can, genius does what it must”. How aptly does this quote describe Virat Kohli. Team India won the hearts of not only Indians but, also, cricket lovers all over the world with their jaw-dropping performances. With their ruthless thumping of all the teams in the fray, they brought extra joy to the Diwali festivities. But, all that achievement was of little value, today, as they took on New Zealand in the first semi-final knockout fixture. If they failed to cross the line, all their previous efforts in the past four weeks would have gone in vain. Though, New Zealand lost to India in the league stage, they were quite capable of turning the tables in a knockout match. Then, there is the added pressure of a sudden death kind of situation, a possibility of the ‘law of averages’ catching up with India at the wrong time, a toss that could go wrong, and the not so flattering record of India against the Kiwis in the knockouts. There were press conferences by both captains regarding this important match. These conferences are more like sparring matches before the main event. Captains often dole out platitudes, and you’re none the wiser about their planning or tactics. Therefore, I hardly follow these player-media press conferences. For me, the action on the field describes more eloquently what the captains’ words cannot. I believe that to be World Champions, a team has to overcome all obstacles, pitch, ground conditions, toss, weather, and more importantly the opposition. Only then, they can be acknowledged as world beaters. India had risen to the occasion in the round-robin leg of the tournament. Now, it remained to be seen whether they could cross the final two hurdles. There was some controversy in the media regarding the change of pitch but it just turned out to be much ado about nothing. Both the teams would have loved to bat first and, as luck would have it, India got the chance. The belting of the Kiwi attack started in right earnest by Rohit and Gill and after they left, it was carried on by Shreyas, Kohli, and Rahul. India amassed a few shy of 400. Whether it was enough in perfect batting conditions and under lights remained to be seen. Despite a good day at the office in batting, the bowling wasn’t as sharp in the beginning as it should have been. Bumrah and Siraj were off-colour, today. It was left to Shami to create pressure whenever he came on to bowl, and he reaped a rich harvest of 7 wickets for his efforts. Daryl Mitchell and Williamson, for a major part of the Kiwi innings, looked like they would be the saviours and carry New Zealand on their shoulders to an improbable victory. That didn’t materialise as Shami came back to stamp his authority over the Kiwis and smother any fightback lingering in them. Shreyas Iyer stole the limelight from Virat Kohli with his scintillating century, and Shami steals the limelight from Shreyas with an unbelievable 7 wicket haul on a placid pitch on which over 700 runs were scored. There were so many heroes in India’s victory that Shubman Gill’s innings of unbeaten 80 almost went unnoticed. But, that is a reflection of the number of match-winners the Indian team is packed with. The enormity of ‘King’ Virat Kohli’s achievement will take more time to sink in as India celebrates its immediate heroes and entry in to the finals of Cricket World Cup 2023.

A lot of time was spent talking about the pitch during the discussion. But there was hardly any analysis on it. If you look at the past data of Wankhede, the team batting first has always had a significant advantage over team batting second. The used pitch was shorn of all the grass just to ensure that the toss does not become a determining factor during a semi final. This was clearly apparent in the way New Zealand managed to stay in the chase till about the 40th over. I reckon, if we had stuck to the original pitch the margin of victory would probably have been a 170. Please base your opinions on data and not on your biases.

NZ had a chance to win even after 40 overs only because of pitch change. Yes NZ would have won if pitch hadn't changed and they batted first not because NZ is the better team but because of the toss advantage . Do you want that ? @@anoopgec4818 No the toss shouldn't be the deciding factor. Unfortunately on a ground like this the toss is going to have an impact regardless, ala ball swings under lights. I'm referring to India's persistent interference with pitches across the board. There were three changes made to pitches post the New Zealand England game. Two of these games, I believe, featured India. Shaping conditions, regardless of the toss, once a fresh deck has been chosen, is manipulation.

What axe does Andy Atkinson have to grind? A lot of this is perhaps cultural as well. India and Indians in general have not much regard for such protocols. They are of a casual attitude towards it. It is not given as much importance as perhaps it would be given by other countries. At the end of the day there was really no issue. Andy Atkinson made it out to be a request from the team management. That is an allegation without any evidence. I read the article in the Mail, it was ridiculous. If ICC was really that upset they could and should have stopped the WC. They have not and principally they did not think much of the pitch change either. Certainly looks like Atkinson is upset that he was circumvented and was not consulted on the decision, and perhaps rightly so. In retaliation he may have over-reacted a bit. Looks like he pulled a Trudeau.

I for one wanted to see Rohit stick around for more overs. He's sort of the player that if he stays till 25 overs, he would take the score way past second team chasing. I'd rate Rohit higher than Kohli because I feel if he wanted, he could have gotten 50 hundreds too being an opener and having more time to score hundreds. Someone who has three double hundreds in ODI surely has immense talent.

See, to score a hundred on an insanely consistent basis, a player has to be fit enough to be able to run hard for a longer duration. Because if he cannot do that, he has to make it up with boundaries which then increases risk-taking and hence results in higher chance of getting out and thus reduces consistency. This is why I believe even if Rohit tried really hard, it would have been quite impossible for him. If he had maintained his fitness for much longer than he has, he could have gotten to 40 hundreds by now. Please don't get me wrong. I truly believe Rohit has been the most important batter in this World Cup by far, not just in the Indian team but overall. His incredible batting in the powerplay has been a testament to the kind of approach he wanted to take and his shot-making ability has meant he has been pretty much spot on every single time. But scoring hundreds in these difficult conditions is very challenging. I believe Rohit and Kohli are both finally playing the way they would have always wanted to play which is such a great sign for India because these two are the pillars on which Indian ODI cricket stands and has done so for the past decade. I'm just loving that Rohit is absolutely going bonkers at the start and Kohli is obliterating any chance of a collapse which is complementary and wonderful for our batting lineup. This gives the freedom to Shreyas Iyer to just come, take a few balls to get in and then start taking risks and with his strength and ability to clear the ground with ease, it's coming off more often than not.
