Koi Pond Build. DIY Pre-Filter. Sieve Filter. Control Valve. Plastic Weld.

This is part 8 of my Koi Pond build. In this video I show you step by step on how I build a DIY Sieve Filter or Pre-Filter. This is my first time attempting to plastic weld. It is a longer video, but it did take me a long time to get this filter built. Once the pond is up and running I'll do an update on how this filter actually works.

Pond size 12"x8"x5" Approx. 3590 Gallons
Box-weld liner
Pond walls Earth and Railroad ties (sleepers).
Railroad ties 7"x9" 3 layers stacked to get an above ground height of 27 inches.
Dug down 33" and install a Koi Toilet 3" bottom drain.
Overall water depth will run about about 58 inches.
24"x48" glass viewing window.
Filter system #1 DIY Sieve into 3 55 gal barrel moving bed system.
Filter system #2 Pond Skimmer fed into a Bakki shower system.
Might try to incorporate some aquaponics in down the road.

You need to notch the separation panels the top; say 1 inch from top and water line to prevent overflowing buddy 👍

Zippy quality workmanship 👌🏻Just a thought 💭 maybe a small slither of polystyrene on bottom of float box would make that damper activate more responsive 🤔

I ended up putting a bead of silicone around the butter fly valve, let it dry, and then used an Exacto knife to cut it open, now the butterfly creates a nearly water tight seal.

Bro you should put straps around the casing to help with the water pressure to prevent it from opening out

I'm using it, it's doing the job, I might redesign it in the future as I think the sieve could catch more. I only clean it once a week, I could probably clean it more often for better performance. I've added 2 layers of sponge on top of the sieve to help it catch more debris. (a course layer and fine layer). My water quality is excellent, I have about 20 Koi in the pond.

Hi zippy I have a question so I’m running a 4” bottom drain . I connect the 4” bottom drain to the sieve ? And then convert after the pump to a 2” drain to the barrels correct ?

I have a 2 inch pipe coming out of the Sieve, but then i increase it to a 3" pipe into the barrel filter. The 2 inch pipe connects easier to my pump. Make sure your sieve mesh covers fairly well and doesn't escape. I'm going to redo the Sieve mesh and have it overlap more as I'm seeing muck escape between the cracks down into the section where the pump is. You don't want the muck to hit your pump as it will just blend it up and send it into your barrels. You want the sieve to catch as much waste as it can before continuing to the barrel filter. Hope that helps!

Why doesn’t Zippy simply cut those 45 degree bevels on the table saw. Polypro cuts much better with a blade over a grinder
