These recordings are so helpful for those of us using the modern Greek pronunciation (which is the liturgical pronunciation of the Holy Orthodox Church). The majority of seminaries and universities in the U.S. and Western Europe use the reconstructed pronunciation with sounds so forced when we read it that way. This way, with the modern (Byzantine) pronunciation makes the biblical Greek sound like a real language. Thanks for posting!!

I can't stand that way of pronouncing, it sounds so forced and uncanny. Even if the intentions are good (some of those people really care about the idea of authenticity), it still falls flat. If you take the example of modern people trying to speak a foreign language, there are so few cases when they actually succeed in doing a "good enough" rendition. The language still sounds a bit off, with all their efforts and good intentions. And that happens with languages that are still alive and for which one has a wealth of resources available. So the idea that some guy figured out, at a distance of several thousands years from the original speakers, how they "actually" pronounced things is absolutely ludicrous to me. Without having an original 3000-something years old man to correct you when you're mispronouncing something in your so called "restored pronunciation", there's no way on Earth you are going to do a good job, and if you think you are you're just fooling yourself, because that just goes against basic common logic. An ancient speaker might not agree with the way a modern day Greek pronounces the language, due to the natural way the language itself has evolved over time, which is perfectly fair. But at least it is a "living" language and it's coming from the actual ancestors of said people, so you get a much better chance you're doing it right. The fact that that kind of phony pronunciation is still so widely taught all across the academic studies is baffling to me.

I was given a Greek New Testament and a textbook for Erasmian almost a year ago, and I was thrilled. Unfortunately, I quickly found that Erasmian leaves too much to interpretation, and is virtually impossible to pronounce. When I finally came across some modern Greek, I knew that was what I wanted to use.

There is no language in history that has remained the same for even a hundred years, let alone thousands of years. Reconstructed pronunciation is based on tons of solid evidence, informing us how Greek was pronounced at every stage of the language's history. Greeks who claim that Homer pronounced his language just like they do today are blinded by nationalism. Homeric poetry would make absolutely no sense with Modern Greek pronunciation, it completely destroys the meter. Koine Greek of the 1st century AD of course was a lot closer to Modern Greek but it was still very different. I really don't understand why it's always the Greeks who claim that their ancient language must have been pronounced like the modern form. It doesn't even make sense from a nationalist point of view. The fact that your language went through a lot of changes has no effect on your history, your cultural heritage or the continuity of the Greek tradition. Greek is such a rich and diverse language, why do you feel the need to destroy this richness and diversity by claiming that it has always stayed the same? Only dead languages stagnate. Even in ancient times Greek was composed of a multitude of different dialects, all with their own unique character. Of course a lot of Greeks claim that the reconstructed pronunciation sounds weird to them. But that's to be expected. Old English sounds extremely weird to Modern English speakers. I as a German find Old High German very odd. But that doesn't magically change the facts. My intuition about Old High German is wrong because I don't speak Old High German, I speak Modern German. You, as a Modern Greek speaker, are not an expert on Ancient Greek because you're not a native speaker of Ancient Greek. If I pull out a random passage from Homer, you most likely wouldn't understand most of it just like I don't understand the Old High German Hildebrandslied. Another reason why Greeks claim that reconstructed pronunciation sounds ugly is simply because a lot of people don't pronounce it correctly. If you want to know how it sounds if it's done correctly, listen to this guy (who's actually Greek): kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4DZh4qfediDjbM Personally, I find this much more beautiful than Modern Greek (even though Modern Greek does sound quite nice). The tonal pitch-accent, the aspirated consonants, the variety of vowels and diphthongs combined with the distinction between short and long vowels give the language a beautiful musicality that is absolutely unique. This is what Homer's supposed to sound like.

I'm learning Koine Greek. There are plenty of tools available online these days, including youtube "Alpha with Angela", youtube "Greek for all", and the free book "Ancient Greek for Everyone". I need to listen and read more to get better at Greek. The goal is to eventually read the bible fluently in Greek.

I also have a textbook because of a biblical Greek course I tried to take in uni. Sadly the lecture was going a bit too fast because it's twice a week and kind of intensive, and the teacher didn't want to make the contents available before the lecture which would have made it a lot easier to take notes and understand the material during the lecture haha so I decided to learn on my own and then attend the lecture next year!

So beautiful when pronounced this way! Sounds perfectly natural. I could listen to this for hours and never tire of it. The reconstructed pronunciation just doesn't do the bible justice. Besides, even if that pronunciation was accurate, it is based on the Greek of Pre-Alexandrian Athens from four hundred years earlier and not the language as it was spoken during Jesus' time. A lot can change in four hundred years.

Have you considered working with duolingo.com to help create a program for Koine Greek? I am using it to learn modern Greek, with the hope in mind to learn to read the New Testament in Greek, but the more I learn, the more I realize the differences. I have seen some requests for Koine on duolingo's discussion pages. I' not sure how it all works, but it uses volunteers to teach languages. The volunteers are native speakers, so pronunciation is accurate. Please, if you do this continue to use modern pronunciation. Thank you

I wish more native Greek speakers would produce content such as this. I've spent all afternoon looking and I could not find much of anything 😑. Even audio books that you can purchase in audible are not spoken by native Greeks. I understand that ancient Greek and modern Greek are not the same, but if I were to learn the sounds of Greek, I would prefer to learn from a native speaker.

I agree. Being a native speaker is a tremendous gift - both for greek and Hebrew. But when you are a native it might not cross your mind that it's that special so most people people never even consider recording some portions. There is so much that could be done, bible in all the different versions like TR, USB, WH, SBL... Old testament LXX, early church writings etc.

Thank your for being willing to support this. By now I'm in no need of support as I have taken up a job in the world (tent-making of sorts). I'm still very active in my local church and I don't have any new project planned requiring funds. I mean I wish I could do another recording of the SBL Greek Text (loose copyright but much more modern Greek text) or portions of the LXX. But then it would be better for some Greeks to do it among themselves. Why fund a German flying to Greece to do some recording. Doesn't sound very efficient. But the actually reader here is now director of the Greek Bible College in Athens. I'm sure he is well connected.

Whativ done is: search for koine greek grammar,lesson or ancient greem on youtube. on google type greek new tetament vocabulary by sequence , download the free pdf and print it. I prayed for you now my friend please do your best. for the vocabulary i reccomend 10 to 20 words learned a day( if you use anki app you wont forget the word, because the ones you dont remember will appear more and the ones you do appear less and less). Jesus Christus - The Name of Jesus Christ sounds just like German. This is really really beautiful! I think we need to go back to the original Greek not the Hebrew. As the oldest N.T was written in Greek and spoken by Jesus. The most beautiful Name is Jesus in the English language! Now if i spoke Hebrew than Yeshua would be his Name. Why then did the Jews translate the Tanakh into Greek around 200 BC which resulted in the Septuagint translation, also called LXX. The LXX was the go to translation in the time of Jesus and the apostles and it quoted most of the time. Check out the history of the LXX. Greek was the lingua franca back then.

It is not koine Greek if changed; in koine Beta is B, not V; Delta is D, not 'theh'. I love modern Greek, but it is not the common Greek pure letter pronunciation.( Latin spoken by Cornelius was not modern liturgical Latin, but classical form for another example on forms. )

I am awfully sorry but Modern Greek pronunciation of Ancient Greek gives pain to my ears. Iotacism, itacism, b=v, theta as "th" like in English and not as a voiced plosive like Koine apparently sounded like … I appreciate your work. But AVRAHAM … come on, Phile!

There is much evidence that modern pronunciation is closer to original Greek than Erasmian. Avraam work well with me as it's the same pronunciation in Hebrew. It only makes sense that ב‎ became β in Greek transliteration with v pronunciation. In the end its what you are used to. If you don't like it try finding a Koine Greek audio Bible with your pronunciation.

Oh, definitely , Erasmian sounds terrible. Especially, because there actually is no definite Erasmian: listen to a German speaking or a speaker of English and you will be amazed by the different phonetic interpretations. I disagree with your explanation of "β" to "v". While it is true that many languages show "v" and "β" allophony, I maintain that Ancient Greek differentiated between "υ", "β" and "v". The voiced labio-dental "v" perhaps did not exist in the first place, and was either replaced by "υ" or "β", if it existed in the source language. "דוד" is realized as a diphthong which can be seen in the orthography of "Δαυὶδ". So these Ancient Greek interpretations do show that the phoneme inventory was much more complex that it is today in Modern Greek. Also, how do you account for the fact that Ancient Greek was a pitch accent language while Modern Greek is a stress language? And again, how do you handle iotacism and itacism in particular? Again, I appreciate your effort. I'm just curious how you defend these points.

It is a matter of personal preference. To me, he sounded natural and great. The language sounds beautiful when spoken this way. I would be flabbergasted if it turns out he isn't a native Greek speaker. And, fyi, Abraham is pronounced Av-Raham in Hebrew because the bet turns to vet when in the middle or end of a word. It's called consonantal mutation. gimel, dalet, sin and tav undergo similar transformation in Ancient Hebrew and in eastern liturgical Hebrew pronunciations that have survived to this day like that of Iraqi, Yemeni and some Sephardic Jews. I'm still something of a novice at Greek outside of linguistic concepts tied to phonology but Hebrew, I know pretty good so can speak with some small authority on the subject.

@Townsend I don't defend those points at all. You are the expert. I focus on understanding the content and like philomelodia said below - want a natural sounding audio version of the NT. As you said, Erasmian pron. sounds different in Germany (where I live) or UK (where I learnt Greek at first). Besides I know of no audio Koine Greek NT that uses a correctly reconstructed pronunciation and is for free. The reader could never be a native speaker either for obvious reasons.

@philomelodia: The reader is a native Greek but it's not me. I just had the equipment and time to edit all the recordings. I would love to do another project of the SBL text of the NT, or the LXX or some early Christian writings. But I know of no Greek in my city that would be up to it. Maybe one day I do some crowd-funded trip to Greece and uses my connections there to produce something. Like this comment, if you would be interested in more free native Greek audio resources.

***** The English of 2016 is not the English of Old English. Among other things, the pronunciation has changed completely. The Greek of 2016 is not Koine Greek. Among other things, the pronunciation has changed. So when you pronounce it the same, I am leery. We know, for example, that phi wasn't pronounced like an /f/, because Latin had an /f/, but they transliterated Greek words with a _ph_ (philosophy, etc.).

Koine Greek pronunciation and accent probably sounded a lot like modern Greek - you can tell because of how smooth the words flow. Also, remember the Greek Orthodox Church has been using the Koine Greek Bible so that is evidence words are being pronounced as close as can be imagined to the original.

it flows because greek spelling remained pretty much the same so you can easily read it with modern pronunciation, you can make latin flow with eccumenical pronunciation but everyone knows that it is very wrong. On the other hand you cant make middle english flow with modern pronunciation because the spelling is so different that if would sound very funny with modern pronunciation rules
