What is kojic acid
Kojic’s acid primary use - and benefit - is to lighten visible sun damage, age spots, and scars. This ultimately gives you those anti-aging effects that youre looking for.
How does kojic acid work
Unlike other acids that work by dissolving the bonds between the cells and exfoliating the skin, kojic acid works by inhibiting pigment production, responsible for…pigment. It inhibits and prevents the formation of tyrosine, which is an amino acid that’s needed to produce melanin. Unlike alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids, kojic acid won't even out your complexion by chemically exfoliating the outermost, dead layer of skin.
Is kojic acid safe
Kojic acid is well tolerated. There are issues of contact dermatitis. Something to keep note of, which is why I would spot test it first before applying it to the face. First on the arms, then the neck. But Generally speaking, kojic acid is better tolerated than most acids, but an allergy or irritation is certainly possible. But nevertheless, It’s been approved for use in cosmetic products in concentrations of 1 percent or less.
How long does kojic acid take to work
Dont throw it out if nothings changed in 2 weeks. You may see greater results - or faster results - if you also add glycolic acid to the treatment as well or another ingredient that ill get to in a bit.
Now: Kojic Acid has become a favorite product for some dermatologists, especially since some of their patients who have had dryness or irritation from hydroquinone, have an easier experience using products with kojic acid when they made that switch.

There is a skin care product from Japan called Kikumasamune lotion, I don't know if you have heard of it, but this lotion (it's actually more like a toner from what I've seen because it is of a very watery consistency, but for some reason in Japan they call it a lotion) but this lotion is basically sake fermented rice water which is where kojic acid is derived from. I have heard that sake is kojic in it's natural state and whenever it's processed in labs turning it into acid it becomes synthetic. So, Kikumasamune I guess would be more natural as it comes directly from the fermented rice. I would like to try Kikumasamune lotion but I am hesitant to do so because in the past I had an allergic reaction to kojic acid soap, real bad contact dermatitis where my skin actually marbled (don't know if this lotion from Japan should be compared to kojic acid soap which maybe is more synthetic) but because of my past allergic reaction to it, I don't know if trying kojic acid in its natural state from fermented rice would be okay for me. Dr. Aspires, could you please give me your opinion on the matter? It would be very helpful to have your input and greatly appreciated as well, thank you.

You actually can make your own rice water fermented and placed in a spritz bottle. I think the results might take longer, as I gave up! But it is supposed to be really good for your skin and it is super easy to make. It may not be as strong as sake which might be easier on your skin.

It depends what was the original skin state. If the pigmentation has been caused by temporary skin damage like from acne and acne marks, kojic acid may have the ability to permanently lighten the darker colored skin. I hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for your question. In short, yes in may work for skin blemishes as it may limit the production of melanin. I do not recommend using the soap on the face however. Soaps are only in contact for a short period, so they are not as effective as leave-on Kojic acid serums or creams.

To add to this it's the second ingredient in this product you recommend, which means it's a lot of it inside, plus 10% Glycolic acid is wayyy too much to use on the face

Hi Susanna, thanks for your question. A lot of formulations have been for the face. Once you have patch tested it and have no reactions. A kojic acid soap can be used on all non-sensitive areas of the body like the arms.

Thanks for your question. In short, yes you may, but the question really comes down to what you are looking to achieve. The downside is that it may cause irritation, which is a factor we try to mitigate around. I have always been a proponent of less is more as you can dial in on which products exactly yielded efficacy. It really is whatever you can tolerate.... Sometimes it is best to use the Kojic in the am and the Tretinoin in the pm if insist on going this route. I hope this helps 🤞

I’ve been using kojic acid soap for a few months now and it has done wonders on my acne scars but hasn’t lightened my skin. There is more of an even tone as I used to have lots of dark spots on both cheeks but as they’ve faded, it’s now brought a glow on my skin.
