This lovely Kojo no Mai (fuji Cherry) which I picked up a couple of months ago has finished flowering and needs to be structurally pruned before it grows this year. In this video, I explain why I remove certain branches to hopefully guide this tree towards becoming a good bonsai in the future.

I purchased a couple of Black Cherry saplings last year and one of them took right off. It took well to wiring and I pruned it back quite hard 3 times. It is such a vigorous plant. I put it in the green house for the winter. I live in Colorado where it gets very cold one day then warms right up the next day. The greenhouse temp went from 7 below to 112 the next day! I brought it in and waited and finally the trees buds began to show life. Amazing resilience. I actually tried to air layer a large branch off of my Wisteria 3 times and I failed 3 times. I'll try again but will triple my sphagnum moss application. Another great video, thanks from Denver, Colorado USA

Hi Guy. I have heard that these trees are really tough cookies, and it sounds like yours definitely are. Apparently, they are easy to grow from hardwood cuttings, but the ones I tried last year didn't take. Good luck with the air layer!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to doing some more pruning on this in a few weeks. It grew really well and has got a fair bit bigger in one year.

Great video. When did you do this project...what time of year? I have one that has ended its flowering after Spring (UK) and not sure whether to go for the bonsai project now!

That maple is lovely. I think the branching is low enough to do a mother and daughter style tree with one branch longer than the other. Would really suit it I feel.

Thanks Ben. I have applied a couple of air layers in one of my videos, and I have yet to decided what length I chop the trucks to, but as you say, it would work well as a mother and child.
