Kokū is one of the oldest Koten Honkyoku pieces in the repertoire. Its origins go back to the 13th century, when Kyochiku Zenji "heard" this melody while practicing meditation at night at Kokudo Temple in Ise Province. Kyochiku experienced a transformation through the sound of the shakuhachi and has since passed on his understanding of Zen by blowing the bamboo flute instead of chanting sutras.
Kokū is made up of two ideograms. "Ko" (虚) refers to the Absolute, to what cannot be expressed in words. "Kū" (空) can be translated as "sky". Kokū can be translated as "Empty Sky". It is a piece that conveys deep serenity and evokes the Absolute through the infinite sky.
We recorded Koku in the most wonderful place in Spain: the Monegros desert, where the blue sky shines every day and the silence and solitude fill us with joy.
Ramon Humet: 2.4 shakuhachi
