Such a cool video, since I'm old school.... fishing from 60 years ago, yikes. We did a modified old school rig, cow bells but they made smaller ones. Never used needle fish, more red magic and not sure the other name. I still have the lures from back then, haven't been used in 20 years. Glad to send a picture or even send the lures to you if interested. Thanks again, just so fun to watch, especially since i don't have a boat or kayak, it brought back great memories of my dad and I fishing for kokanee.

Caught my first Kokanee at Detroit Lake in 1963 when I was 13. Ford Fenders and worms as I recall. No one used corn then. No fish finders and about 50 percent of the fish were lost. Great memories though. Really enjoy watching your videos Tyler.

Speaking of spoons, the God's tooths are deadly for kokanee. The trick is to take the ring off and flip it around run a standard 2 hook snell rig with a bead between the top hook and narrow end of the spoon

i usually always have one at least one rod rigged just like you described silver and blue with a maggot is my go to.

Last time out I saw an old timer running cow bells (fair enough), and another boat using what appeared to be tuna rods... 😂

I have used tuna/ halibut rods to stand in for downriggers. Line counter reels, 2 pound balls and rigger clips worked fine for kokanee on a buget.

i dont think its so much old school vs new, its just what they had in the stores then and you know time flies, it just sounds so condescending and disrespectful.Trust me, i was just 28 recently, now im 62

Another flutter spoon I had great success with over the years is Dick Nite. Choosing the most productive color pattern was always a key not only for Dick Nite but for Needlefish as well. Usually required a fair amount of time investment to figure it out then you just had to remember the next time you went to that lake which one typically works best.

I'm anti-snubber but they really help on the lake trolls. I've had times at Yale where the lake troll outfished dodger like 8 to 1 for whatever reason. (Maybe drawing them in from futher away?)

I grew up running small "willow leaf" lake trolls with the rudder up front followed by a wedding ring spinner on a long leader. Everything pink! Including the live maggots. In eastern BC that is what all the old timers are still running. Flashers and hoochies on a mooching reel are much easier for my 5 year old to handle, haha

Funny, the needlefish and triple teaser was some of my go to trout lure growing up. Didn’t know people used them for Kokanee, but I didn’t get into Kokanee until it was already new school. Interesting that the old school rig didn’t catch any more trout. I wonder if the old school rig would get more love if it was modified to a shorter leader like the new school? That being said, we kind of transitioned out trout fishing to using the same new school Kokanee rigs.

Did you put a snubber on the old school? Also, old school might be disqualified by using a maggot.😃

even with mack lite flash rigs seems the drag is not worth the flash. so hard to tell cause the flash from one may draw them in but the 2nd rod may get the catch cause of action or lure or whatever.

Great comparison! I've seen a few boats with the cow bells rigged up and wondered if those were actually more effective.

I never had luck with large cowbells. I always wondered if taking most of them off but leaving one or two would work out better. Haven’t been able to get out on the water enough to try it though!

Sometimes I will run the lake troll attached to my downrigger ball, then I would have virtually no setback to a lure with good action. I also have a small three-blade Lake troll, the blades on it are the size of small spoons and it seems to produce very well with way less drag!

First impression: OLD school needlefish (Triple Teasers, etc) the color choice was silver, brass, maybe copper with the option of a red nose.

I've had good success with a combo of the versions. Attach the lake troll to the downrigger ball so you don't have the drag, use a dodger with a needle fish with two hooks. You need the dodger cause otherwise the two hooks kill the action of the needle fish and you won't catch a thing.

Great job. I enjoyed the challenge. Back in the early 80's when NY had kokanee I fished Sebago spinners. Like a lake trol only much smaller blades and only 18 inches long. Ever tried them?

In this case "old school" is a literal drag, too much drag. For smaller kokanee anyway, the mega-bling gang trolls take the fun out. But a 20-incher is a blast on most any lighter weight, trout size gear. IMHO

80's and 90's it was Wedding Rings for me. The only difference was brass or chrome blade. And yeah, dodgers actually let you fight the fish, not the gang troll....we ALWAYS used snubbers with the gang troll. Probably helped.

By the late 1980's I noticed Pop Gear was a brand name, like Ford Fenders or Doc Shelton's (that I had been using since the early '60's). Not sure if that was how it started, or a smart business decision to use a generic name as their brand name.

i am sorry for your loss.😢 done once myself years ago luckily it wasn’t a very expensive setup. are they still biting up there? went up twice in the first two weeks of it opening and did OK, but definitely had to put in the work. Was wondering if it’s worth going back up there one more time.

Adding a rubber helps keep thee fish from fighting the trolls. I prefer dodgers these days but always use a rubber when testing out an old school rig for a change.

A snubber works better with a lake troll. there’s so much drag they get leverage and tear it out of their mouth a lot easier.
