Minho participated in the story-boarding, art direction and co-directed his mv. He also magically got SM to drop the logo sound at the end to not ruin how emotional the mv is. But Runaway is the best song on the album - you should check that one out if you have time. He also did it at his fanmeeting with Gemini and on a music show. Their voices blend so well.

Irene's dancing is really underrated. She's never lacking when it comes to choreography. I just feel like people who criticise her is because her facials are mostly neutral, very similar to Krystal's style. When they want to serve, they do lol! She's a very gifted dancer when it comes to precision and being effortless. Minho probably has my favourite sound in SHINee solo wise after Taemin.

I almost allllways agree with you, but I don't really agree about Red Velvet's sound maturing - because their sound is always developing, vocals fully grown, and with fully matured concepts as well. Feel My Rhythm was light but mature. They were delivering elegance. And then there are the bsides. Bad Boy is someplace that, in my opinion, they've grown from a ton. There are songs that are more velvety in recent history that have different kinds of mature concepts as well - like Japanese title track Wildside, b-sides on FMR and especially on Birthday as well. I think you will really realllly love the Birthday b-sides. As far as self-producing though... it would be cool to see if that is in the cards for Red Velvet as a group, but I am definitely hopeful to see it more at the very least in their solo projects. We've got Seulgi becoming a lyricist with Dead Man Runnin' - we know Yeri has written songs. Wendy has worked on lyrics and is very hands on in song development... but I'm not sure if SM will see the vision of turning over more control when it comes to Red Velvet as a project if that makes any sense? I can at least fully agree that I want to see SM INVESTING more in Red Velvet - since they always deliver. Maybe they feel like they don't have to invest as much BECAUSE they are so reliable at delivering anyway?

Fair points actually I hear you for sure! I guess I expect them to innovate and push the needle forward in ways that a group that’s been around for this long would but I guess they do evolve but just not in a way that seems mature, to me.

I feel like their sound keeps on developing and still experimental… it’s just the concept that SM decided to make them do in their MV is “cute”. Also, I think it’s their last revefestival concept (with Zimzalabim, Umpah Umpah, Psycho, FMR) so they might be able to show more of their Velvet side. One theory I have of why they seem to have more “cutesy” releases is because of their releases outside the group. SM needs a way to distinguish all their solos and subunit so what better way than to make RV keep on doing “light” concepts while solo activities do others? It’s just marketing ig

In my opinion, I feel like SM is no longer “invested” in Red Velvet anymore. They’re still producing content and stuff but it doesn’t feel like they’re looking to grow them anymore. They’re supposed to be the SM counterpart to YG’s BlackPink and JYP’s TWICE (continuing the SNSD/2NE1/WG trio) but they’re the only ones that haven’t had a world tour while BlackPink and Twice have had several.

Doesn’t need to be stadiums, if SM is worried they won’t sell out. Like, Red Velvet is VERY popular. Red Flavor, Bad Boy, Ice Cream Cake, Dumb Dumb, etc. They’ve had concerts in Korea and Japan. Late 2019 was the perfect time to go on a world tour. Tbh, SM is VERY much a boys club. How many tours have NCT had? (They had their FIRST world tour less than 3 years after debut)

Looking it up, they’ve literally only headlined 3 “tours” and each was only 2 or 3 performances (all were end of 2019 and early 2020). SM, JYP and YG have decades of history of being at the top of the Kpop entertainment industry. Whatever groups they debut within a certain amount of time of another of the 3 will automatically be their “rival.” That’s how the media sees it too.

Red Velvet debuted in August 2014... Twice in 2015, Blackpink in 2016!!!! You make it sound like SM created RV as a counterpart to the others. You should say Twice and Blackpink were the other company's counterparts to RV... If BP have made it big in US, EU... it doesn't mean that SM doesnt give a f about RV.... Painting a private company as if they wouldn't want to earn money from their products is a bit absurd, they need their groups, soloists, actors and comwdians to do good in order to keep existing. The thing is though, Wendy’s injury has nothing to do with SM not putting on a world tour. They should have had one at the end of 2019 or early 2020. MEANING it would’ve already been planned, announced and tickets would’ve already gone on sale BEFORE Wendy got injured at the end of year music show. SM generally doesn’t treat their girl groups well. F(x) didn’t get their fandom name until the very end of their careers. SNSD had their Holiday/All Night promotions cut short as a way for SM to pressure members into re-signing. I could go on, but there’s a reason why SM girl groups aren’t lasting as long as their boy groups. SM literally only likes them when they’re fresh and new OR at the top of the game. “Counterparts” is not a bad thing. No idea why you’re so stuck on this term. These companies have history. These 3 groups are each company’s 3rd Gen Girl Group. They WILL be compared. Counterpart also doesn’t imply anyone being first or as “copies” or having anything in common musically or style wise. They’re each company’s representative girl group for the 3rd Generation. That’s all. And it’s WEIRD that SM’s hasn’t had a world tour, when 4th Gen groups that aren’t as popular have.

'Bad Boy' feels mature to you? Really? To me, these concepts often feel like wearing a costume called maturity, which is one of the most childish things you can do, even though it may be a rational thing to do. I just don't think 'mature' is an aesthetic, you know? And I'm not clear on what it means. I also genuinely despise the idea that 'cute' is the opposite of 'mature', or that one precludes the other. I think people should really think about what those concepts mean and, more importantly, what they are leveraged for, before they use them so freely. I get that language needs to be descriptive and that we need to reckon with the world we got, but I think asking ourselves what really constitutes maturity helps understand culture under capital. On that front, I don't understand the constant desire for maturity either, whatever it means, because the industry is conceptualized to preserve childhood in appearance, and demand maturity from what are essentially child laborers. Like, let's be real here and not confuse aesthetic and material reality. And people do that: people think 'maturity' as a concept means more independence for idols, and those two things are not related at all. At all.
