Though he is an excellent dancer, Taemin is also a singer and his vocals in this song are excellent. His achy wailing at the end is just - yes, perfect. And the choreography in this performance is creative and beautiful. So many depictions of the whorls in the heart of a rose, and at the end, the blooming and closing of a night-blooming flower. I think Taemin and his dancers, especially the female dancers, perfectly embody the seductive moves of a "black rose." If it got more energetic or aggressive, I think it wouldn't fit with the concept. The song and the choreography are intended as a sexual lure, not an attack.

hm I agree with the reactor but also with this. It’s true that taemin always focuses on the concept, tying the lyrics, dance, vocals etc all to embody a unique concept. I could honestly write essays on his concept creation/expression/articulation. His work is deeper than a lot of other kpop stuff and you need time to see the subtle details of his work and how everything ties together. We can’t really get that from a single look at his work, from an instant reaction. But explanations like this give some clarity so thanks for writing it out 🙌

I think this choreo is perfect for the song, it doesn't need to be fast or energetic. It's soft, delicate and elegant as a black rose... just perfect! and I love the formations and different figures representing the rose.. it's just really smart.

I love this performance, the way Taemin moves is so different to many kpop artists, I was watching the Sirius Tour on your patreon and what I noticed about Taemin’s expression is that it’s so raw and emotional. I think in music show stage it’s always about showing to the camera, so it’ll be a bit more of acting, no sweat, no out of breath, and I can understand Ola feeling about wanting more energy. But if you watch his concert, he went hard, really hard there, so real

I think it's because his title tracks generally are so dance-focused with the choreo so for the more casual viewers/fans, they'll only know him as a dancer and performer and less of a vocalist. I don't think he has to go super hard for every single song even though he's capable of it - not every song is Criminal or Idea with its choreo. Imagine if we didn't get choreo like Move because he only went for power moves. It's a shame because he really does a bit of everything (as befitting a member of SHINee), but slower songs & ballads inevitably grab less attention. I really like stages like Black Rose because he's able to blend both sides of the power choreo with sensuality and softness that he brings emotionally. I never worry about whether or not he's able to sing live - he's able to hit all the choreo and perform it all, he's got it. I love him for his dancing but it's his music that I listen to.

When Taemin goes hard, it's usually in his live performances and honestly, I love it when he loses control both vocally and in his dancing. It's just that he has to do both at the same time! I highly recommend the live version of Soldier & Rise - I think you'll see what I mean.

What I love about shinee and especially Taemin is that they always sing live on stage and still absolutely SLAY choreo! Also this whole album was supposed to be apart of a two part concert experience before C19. I think especially after his first solo concert he learned to build more space for him to relax. Most of his discography is dance oriented and he definitely brings the heat on stage but I did worry that he would exhaust himself if he did that too often. Also this comeback was sandwiched in with SuperM promotions ( which most shawols were salty about ... as they should be) and I don’t think he had a lot of time to practice or deliver it like he would have.

The more you see from Taemin, and SM artists in general, you might even start to recognize Taemin's backup dancers. Because there are only a select few people that can keep up with Taemin, and match his dance style and precision. So, when SM and Taemin find dancers that are exceptional, they hold on to them for as long as they can and they use them in almost everything. The dancers you see in Taemin's MVs are usually most of the same dancers he uses for his concerts and live performances. They are Taemin's dancers. And they are often also SM dancers, which means they are used as backup dancers in a lot of SM's other groups projects. Some of Taemin's dancers have also been Super Junior's and TVXQ's dancers for example. As a teenager, growing up as a member of SHINee, Taemin was known for his feminine look. It took him a long time to accept the fact that he was known for his looks and that everyone thought of him as a "pretty boy," etc. So, a lot of Taemin's songs are about the duality of life and the different sides of someone that makes up who they are. Taemin spent a long time coming to terms with the different sides of his personality and he had to work to overcome being an introvert. Before debuting as a solo artist in 2014, Taemin was known for the fact that he hardly ever spoke during interviews and on programs with his SHINee members. He let everyone else do the talking and he was very quite shy and kept to himself. Which made a lot of people who really didn't know him well think that he was fragile and weak and was a gentle person. He really struggled to overcome that stereotype and to show people that he was masculine.. No one saw how much Taemin was struggling to change people's perceptions more than the other members of SHINee. And as one of Taemin's biggest champions, Jonghyun, SHINee's main vocalist, even wrote a song called "Pretty Boy" specifically for Taemin, after having a conversation with him about the fact that he hated that people couldn't see past his pretty appearance. "Pretty Boy" became part of Taemin's solo debut album and it features Taemin's best friend, Kai from EXO as the rapper in the song. You should check out the comeback stage for "Pretty Boy" to see Taemin and Kai perform together.

@@Koko3op Japan as a nation treat taemin and shinee with so much love and respect. Their Japanese concerts, the filming for these concerts, their dancers, and their Japanese fans are all superior. If you ever see the live performance version of ‘famous’, it’s got some of the best camera direction for a concert I’ve seen. So much attention to detail. I remember when they added last minute Canadian shows to their tour, and for some reason their light sticks weren’t available to purchase on that day. Japanese fans heard about this and to ensure that shinee wouldn’t perform to a black crowd without their fandom coloured light sticks, within a short span of time, they all donated their own lightsticks and got someone to deliver them to the Canadian fans at the concert, on the day.

Yh this man is always subtle and subdued, it’s his brand. He always teases but never gives you anything all at once. If you watch his earlier live stages with shinee, he’s much more powerful/aggressive with his dancing, but over the years he developed his style to be more subdued.

Things is i love his backup dancers in his songs like move but i think for songs like this he dances the moves with a different style than the backup dancers so it kinda throws me off.

Honestly I think that a more aggressive approach to the choreography wouldn't have fit in with the song. You have to remember that Taemin is also all about how he can tell a story through his dancing and tying the dance and the song together. Always, always, always remember that. His dances aren't just there just so that he can dance, he is always telling a story as well.

It's interesting to compare SHINee and SuperM. In concerts, Taemin's dancing in SuperM is often more energetic than the other good dancers (Kai and Ten) like here twitter.com/summertaemin/status/1279960686899142658 but I've never seen Key being outdanced like that in SHINee.
