Off course on 1w you won't have any headroom. That is the whole point of low vs high wattage amps. It's not volume. It's the ability to get high volumes without over saturating the power amp. Put it on 20w with 4x12 and it cleans up. Still gonna be a 6505 though.

Kyle Bull constantly complains about headroom on EL84 tubes. But like you said exactly it’s not meant for being band and concert volumes. EL 84 tubes attenuate better and sound better when knocked down to 5 or 1 watt. Not as muffled as full size tubes attenuated. Bedroom amps should be EL84. If someone wants a loud head by a 50 watt

The whole point of having a 1 watt setting is to get earlier break up, and lower volumes. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do. If you want clean headroom at higher volumes, you need to use higher wattage settings.

I finally found someone who uses the mid knob and doesn't "djent" on a 9-string. I've been looking for a small amp that I can get some classic thrash tones with (say, Rust in Piece by Megadeth or Ride the Lightning by Metallica) with lots of punch for gigs, but can still stay quiet since I live in an apartment (I mean, a tube amp with a headphone jack? HELL YES), all while staying affordable. I think this video has convinced me, thank you for this

Very good amp for thrash tones but I suggest pairing this amp with a tube screamer in front to boost the signal going in because the bass needs a little tightening.

Cool demo but some things I would like to note since ive had mine for over a year now: 1) You can get a pristine clean out of this. Its even better than the full sized 5150/6505. Roll back the gain a knob and lower the volume pot on your guitar slightly. (and one of my guitars is using the EMG JH set so this does work) 2) BOOST IT!!! I mainly play on the crunch channel with the gain at 7. I use a maxon OD808 or 808x ( i have both) with the gain at 0 and balance up 2/3 to all the way. And even with those settings, im getting great old school metal to thrash tones. I do the same thing on the lead channel except the gain is only at 3 and its brutal as fucking boosting it with an overdrive. It really tightens up the low end and gets it saturated nicely. Here is a video I made. It's not a great demo since im actually demonstrating a problem I am having but you can hear a bit of my setup none the less. If you want a better demo, let me know and I can shoot something tomorrow. Mind you, I am only using an iPhone camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX6ZYZeLYtt9r5I

Most people going into this purchase aren't expecting a great "Clean" but you can get clean. I like the 5w setting personally. Keep the Pre gain under 4 and then up the post gain. Don't be afraid to use those mids either. This is one of the better demos out there BTW
@tat2dphreak
@tat2dphreak 7 жыл бұрын
On one watt, turned up like that, you are getting power tube breakup too. I run mine on the 20w mode, with gain around 3 and the post-gain about 4, to get a clean. You can also change the v1 to a 12at7 to great really clean The crunch channel is a beast. I also recommend not scooping those mids, this amp sings with the mids around 6-7.. I've had my mh for a year or so, and play it all the time.
@ledheavy26
@ledheavy26 6 жыл бұрын
wayne fry Agreed, I have the mids on mine at the same. I barely boost the treble or bass on the eq and do most of my adjustments with the resonance and presence knobs. I personally find the 5 watt mode a lot better than the 1 watt mode, I usually record with 5w and about 6-7 on post gain for the rhythm. For cleans I like the pre-gain around 5 and I could split my humbuckers and roll back a tiny bit for good cleans that I can go to dirt easily. 20watt mode sounds the best overall, sounds deeper, but for recording (mostly what I use this amp for) I use the 5 watt mode to get some power tube distortion out of it.

That's odd..my 6505 MH can get clean sounds just fine even on the 1 watt setting. One very easy way to do it though, turn it on 20 watts, turn up the post gain and start from 0 on the pregain and very slowly turn it up until it's a fitting volume. That helps alot. And can still be at a manageable volume. Also just messed around with my own with both single coils and humbuckers. Sounds especially fantastic on clean with single coils. Humbuckers is decent too and still clean.

This is the best review ever made for this amp and I wish I watched this demo before I bought my 6505mh. The amp has so uncontrollable gain. Once you crank it up you lose control over the fizziness and zzzzzz sound. Its ok for its value consideting 20 watt power only however if time goes back, nah, pass of course. But thanks a lot for the video, i wish it was in a higher quality but its honest and I loved it. Big like.

Great demo. One criticism would be your inability to get a workable clean tone. These amps have a surprisingly good clean up. Back of the rhythm channel gain and nudge the post a bit more. It works a treat. Roll off the guitar volume a bit for better results. Also back off the gain in general. Use a tube screamer for boost and it will give that chunky, meaty thrash metal tone while cleaning up the bottom end. This will reduce the farting. Keep up the great work. Subscribed

The 5150/6505 never had a good clean channel. That came with the 5150 II/6505+ versions. If you look at the schematic, it's essentially just a one channel amp. The clean/crunch setting just knock out some gain stages. People back then mainly bought the amps for the gain sounds. Still do. Many guys back in the day, myself included, actually preferred the crunch setting for most stuff. Nice playing BTW.

Back of the gain when you go high on volume. It takes pedals very well on crunch channel, boost it and you'll be blown away. Changing those Chinese tubes is mandatory. Amp will go clean, but make sure you're on 20W mode and not using very high output humbackers. Maxout rhythm post volume, and use pre-gain rhythm as volume. Nice playing and demo.

Lots of factors affect the clean channel, you could have it on the lowest setting on the back which won't push the speakers and will break easier, but will sound worse because it was not pushing the speaker, also how much gain vs main volume etc, active vs passive pickups, how hard you are strumming, how big your speakers are....if you want perfect cleans this is NOT the amp for that, it can give you very usable cleans but not what you might be looking for.

The clean doesn’t dial into a useable clean. And it is dull sounding. The crunch is decent but it lacks definition. It’s a big wall of crunch mush. The lead channel is not articulate. Too fizzy. Too much extra noise. The amp comes very close to being a winner. Especially for the price. But fussy ears will be frustrated that it can only get close.
