Exactly. They are able to compartmentalize women. If it's their mother or sister or daughter, they know these women are off limits (generally speaking, otherwise even these women are not safe at times). Now, when they see a women who is not related to them, suddenly they lose the ability to control their urges? Says a lot about how much of it is involuntary and how much of it is intentional.
@pascalwager45442 ай бұрын
Even these protections are being removed now because naturally humans and animals too have something in them that desensitizes them towards family. It is called westermarck effect. But with the advent & proliferation of the type of adult content specifically marketed & targeted as step f*ntasy this idea has progressively been planted in people's minds and it is going to take its toll on the society sooner rather than later.

Something to ponder: On every major road in Pakistan, there are dhabas, that serve affordable food for middle class men. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them, or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. Not at all different from Pakistan. Police is focused on three things only: getting their salary, taking bribes, providing protection to politicians, powerful, and wealthy. That's it. They don't want to actually do their work. You can see it happen over and over again. For example, Zainab case, they tried their best to not file the FIR and it was from the effort of people themselves that her remains were recovered then they refused to connect it to the earlier similar cases and only did it under public pressure and then it turned out that it was a s*rial-k*ller. Under intense pressure they had to really work on the case which they were able to crack in only 20 days which means if they wanted they could have arrested the guy after the first victim. The same story in the Qasoor case. People approached them with actual evidence in the form of videos and they still refused to record the FIR. Exactly the same behavior for Dua who was a girl kidnapped from Karachi. This time they actually tried to not do any things and when they were forced to proceed they took it upon themselves to damage the case taking the side of the abductors just for revenge.

ONE IMPORTANT WAY TO CHANGE OUR CULTURE: From childhood itself, teach your brothers/sons to pick up after himself, cook food, roll out parathas, clean the house, serve food/water to family members including women family members. Studying for an exam, playing a video game, watching an interesting movie... well, you can still get up and don't need to be served. And if your sister has an exam too then serve her some food while you are getting some for yourself. Normalize the concept of equality between men and women by teaching boys to any and every work that women have been doing at home, down through the ages. Doing that helps prevent the development of the power dynamic that Shehzad is talking about.

Shahzad, this was an excellent episode. Every issue / problem has been analysed so accurately and correctly - this is exactly how I feel about this issue of sexual harassment and abuse. And I am sure zillions of women worldwide think the same way. This problem as you correctly explained occurs in every society but definitely more in Asia. This problem can only be gotten rid of when we teach our boys and men to respect women, and not abuse them, not objectify them. This education has to start at home. Boys grow up seeing adult men in their families abusing and harassing their mothers, sisters, aunts - and so this behaviour is 'normal' for them. THIS HAS TO CHANGE / STOP. The first time I heard about women being beaten up by their husband was when I was 12 years old (I am now 65) and in Std 7. It shocked the daylights out of me. This lady was a another tenant in the house we used were living in. A young couple in their 30s - the lady was a postgraduate but not allowed to work; the husband was an engineer, I think in a public sector undertaking. Our landlord was a Sikh gentleman and his youngest son used to beat his wife. Two couples in the same house ... Both the women had confided in my mother and she in turn told us just to let us know what all men could do to women. But to our utter shock both women told my equally shocked mother that this behaviour (of their husbands) was actually a sign of their love towards them. What??? We had never heard this kind of thing before ....This is how the women are conditioned to accept abuse by their menfolk. The other completely fraud argument is about women egging men on to abuse them. Bullshit. In the 1990s, on the same day 2 news articles shocked me - and I still squirm when I recall them. Both incidents occurred in two cities in northern India. First one: two teenaged boys had had a fight. One of them took revenge on the other by raping his 90+ year old grandmother. The second: a rickshaw puller raped a 6 month old baby in a park. How do you explain this kind of depraved behaviour? Unfortunately, we have seen many, many, many more incidents but somehow these two to me are the worst. Please keep up your excellent work Shehzad. Perhaps you could consider doing more episodes on this issue - at regular intervals - in the hope that it will educate our men. Incidentally, I am from Kolkata - I spent 15 (mid 1970s - early 1990s) years of my youth in the city and it was one of the safest cities in India then. The next 31 years in Delhi - the less I talk about safety in that city the better - and now back in Kolkata. Very, very saddened to see what has happened / is happening. Best wishes and thanks for your excellent work. And apologies for such a long post. But bhadaas nikalni thi ...

Shahzad , this your best video. In India conviction rate for rapes is less than 20percent which is far less than conviction rate of other crimes like murder. Rape is a societal problem. We should atleast give sex education in all schools, colleges even in offices.

This is such a serious and very sad topic. Thank you for taking it up. The comments under the news of the Kolkata case were beyond disgusting. The victim was a doctor who had done 36 hour duty and she was told to go the seminar room to rest. Victim blaming, the horrible fantasies of the victim in such cases are stomach churning.

Why are we settling for less? Why are we only talking about rape cases? Why aren't we talking about the molestation that happens every day? When any girl gets catcalled, groped, touched inappropriately, or sexually assaulted. These incidents should also be given some attention. These are all bad things, and none of them should happen. So why are we only saying "okay, don’t rape," don’t do any of that man. 😡

There is no shaming the shameless . In a country that finds it impossible to acknowledge marital rape as a crime, there is no prayer that is going to stop these crimes. A woman treated like a slave in her house by her husband sets the template for how her sons will treat women in the future.
