I am a firm liberal and I find your reluctance to criticize d tmc on many aspects deeply insensitive Hospital infra - Why dint the hospital have ten armed,strong ,trained security personnel? Why is the infra in that hospital so inadequate ? Why r working hrs so inhumane for every professional in India ? How did d rapists just walk away ? Why does the government not have an American like second amendment? As a male, I agree with your views 100 %. Things are getting worse..we are creating an environment where such gruesome acts are happening almost every moment. And make no mistake, such perpetrators are often females as accomplices..like in this case as reported or a woman chief minister creating a system, where scoundrels are appointed as heads of institutions and allowed to perpetuate such heinous crimes. So, it's not a fight between males vs. females..but a fight between humans and beasts.

I m man, there may be many solutions out there, but I want to emphasize one thing: men should interact more with women in their lives. The less you interact with women, the harder it is to learn to respect them and see them as just human beings like us. I've noticed that men who have Gfs or female friends, sisters tend to be more respectful toward women in general. On the other hand, those who interact less with women often struggle to see them as anything other than sexual objects. It’s hard to understand for them that women are not a object-they’re just normal humans, like the rest of the 8 billion people on this planet.

Yes, fantasizing about women would come down. But quite often, the criminal mindset comes from ...watching womenfolk at home. They see their mothers, sisters, or sisters in law in bad light, and kinda stretch the impression across the board. Dynamic thinking needs to be cultivated from a very young age. This leads to seeing things from different perspectives. As I was mentioning elsewhere......... the rich are getting away with criminal behavior. 25 lakhs is no punishment for a person like Sengar. They can then afford to cultivate unsocial element to go and threaten the victim or victim's family or victim's lawyer. Once such unsocial elements are cultivated, it becomes a lifetime of you scratch my back, I scratch yours. Effectively, the unsocial elements who maybe from poor class too daringly commit such crimes without fearing consequences. We had enough money to build statues of equality and unity, but not enough to build courts, hospitals, upgrade police stations, and pay the judges, staff, police personnel, and doctors. You see, tourism is a fun filled activity. It gets priority over alleviation of misery. That is what bugs me.

We also need to realise that if we condone one act of assault against women, we condone all acts of violence against women. We can't say, oh this one we will ignore because she is a rural woman, another caste, from a religion we dislike or simply "not like us". Or that the criminal is too powerful or a 'godman' (whatever that means!) or from our community or 'sanskari' or a political party i support. Faye, agree 100% with what you say. True women don't need protection but safety. Surprisingly the same safety is needed for men too. They don't get raped, but can be mugged or murdered just the same. Speaking as a survior of sexual abuse, I just want to add a layer of what I hope is nuance to what you've said. I agree we need safety. But doesn't safety entail protection? When we ask for better policing, are we not asking for efficiency in protection? Therefore, what we're appealing to is the goodness, the exceptionalism in men. We're asking them (police, army, firefighters) to tap into their nature and bring out their best- which is to protect. Men are naturally predisposed to taking risks. That explains the defense recruitment ads (appealing men to fight for something higher, a greater ideal). Yes, we are equal (both in the legal and moral sense) which is why only a legal appeal for safety rings slightly hollow. I know I can approach the local policeman, not just because he is legally bound to ensure my safety (therefore my protection) but because he is morally bound too. So to separate safety from protection (and therefore asking men to not make it personal) seems to me to be an incomplete manner of looking at this situation.

As a male, I agree to what you are saying. But things won't change overnight. Society needs to sensitize itself to the needs and concerns of women. And it starts with the policemen, judicial system and politicians. Bengal has sent the highest number of women mps. The condition in other states is worse.

1:47 the stress and fear that Faye mentions is something which is inherent in all Indian women. This is just so disgusting. One of the constant nightmares I Have is, being attacked by someone. Once I shared this with my husband who is not Indian said this is not ok. Honestly that’s why it struck me that all women don’t have this. We deserve to be safe.

As always, Faye, a brilliant opinion piece. Pretty similar here in the UK (where, on average, two women a week are killed by men, often the women's partners or ex-partners) - life is one long risk-assessment, and very few crimes against women, especially sexual crimes, are punished.

But I think you cannot rule out 'protection'. If some one is vulnerable for attack of any kind, you need to give protection, security. In a Society in which women are still vulnerable to secual assault, there can be no safety witjout adequate sevurity, protection. If CC tvs can be controlled and monitored remotely, and if it can send red signals to some authority when some one commits a crime, or rings alarm, itay become safer. But still it will depend upon the honesty of the person in charge.

Is there a single chapter on Respecting women , treating them as equals.Women who overcame obstacles, women in the nation who are making a difference ? Instilling a sense of Self with a moral compass is the most important thing . Every std should incorporate 1 chapter on women empowerment and protection which should progress to women safety and go on to laws that protect women and consequences of rape for the sexual offenders .

In a country like ours law should play a very important role. When a horrific incident like this happens, why cant they test the DNA? How did the DNA of a person got to the other person? Investigation then endless court room arguments from lower to the highest court, 7 to 8 years will go. No one is scared of the punishment. Sometimes when people are not scared of laws, it’s better to adopt the Saudi Arabia policy. Now it’s one of the safest countries.

I am a doctor. The situation is pretty much same in all medical colleges. The administrators should have given her a place near the common ward or near nursing stations. She preferred the seminar room and ? Kept the door not closed. Usually a female nursing attendant will go to call a female doctor to the duty room. Government medical colleges are public place and ramps, corridors,administrative offices, lecture halls, labs are the places where no human beings will there at night and most of the lights won’t function or stolen so these places will be dark at night.These are places where an antisocial elements can hide easily. But nowadays every doctor carries a mobile phone and usually calls are done through them. Does she not kept the door closed or someone broke the door and entered. I don’t know. But half the country’s youth are uneducated, unemployed and drug addicts. It is the duty of us/ administrators/god has to protect. The government won’t. It is very safe to send our girls abroad than the next village. So many girls go to Philippines, Russia and other Eastern European countries and coming back safely. The situation in India will never ever improve.

We live in an unstable society. There is tremendous income disparity, society is divided in the name of caste, creed, religion, etc. So every time you see an angry poor man is raping a woman, he is actually taking revenge on the society, which has not given him anything. He feels left out, and so he doesn't care. Also, men use rape as a tool for suppression. Every time you see rape and murder of a dalit child, or a muslim woman, it is a method of keep the society under leash. No punishment is big enough to tame this beast. We have to make our society more inclusive, we have to unite, we have to evolve a better education system, parents should be taught how build their sons characters, we have to discard our culture of patriarchy. And only then crimes against women will come down. Please do not play politics, and try to gain something out of it.

Yes, you have valid points. But this does not account for sexual assault & rape committed within households- And this is the most common type of rape in India. Family, relatives, ‘family friends’ etc are the most common perpetrators. There is no class difference in these cases. In fact boy children face much sexual abuse as well. It is almost always a difference of power.
