महिलाओं के खिलाफ अपराध के मामले में पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार ने विधानसभा में एंटी रेप बिल पेश किया जिसके बारे मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी और उनकी टीम का कहना है कि ये केंद्र सरकार के नये कानून से भी कहीं ज्यादा सख्त कानून है - लेकिन सवाल है कि क्या वास्तव में महिलाओं के खिलाफ अपराध पर काबू पाने के लिए सख्त कानून की ही जरूरत है? नये कानून की जरूरत तब पड़ती जब शुरुआती कार्रवाई सही तरीके से हुई होती और कानूनी प्रक्रिया की वजह से न्याय मिलने में देर हो रही होती - लेकिन कोलकाता रेप-मर्डर केस में तो पुलिस के शुरुआती एक्शन पर ही सवाल उठाया जा रहा है. ममता सरकार पुलिस को बचाने में जुटी है पुलिस ममता सरकार को बचाने में जुटी है यही चल रहा है बस और अब तो ममता की पुलिस ने हद ही पार करदी पीडिता के परिवार वालों का चुप करने के लिए घूस देने लगी?
