Seriously happy that you're collabing with more channels. I seriously want to get into homebrewing and I've made mead, wine and cider a few times, but they've been subpar. These videos give me an odd sense of inspiration I haven't felt before.

Kölsch is lightly bittered amber water, gets delivered to your table in tiny glasses and a waiter, with a pencil, marks a tally on your coaster. You take beers off the tray to your heart's content, and the waiter diligently marks a tally on your coaster every time you take a glass. At the end of your session you take your coaster, the tally is added up and you pay. That's how Kölsch is served in pubs in Köln. Ever since, I've pronounced it like Curl-sh, with a short "L" sound. This is right if you're pronouncing it in a British, Australian or New Zealand accent. I'd have to think hard to figure out how to write how a Canadian or American would pronounce it.

To me, ales & lagers are easy to tell apart because the yeast flavor is so distinct between the two. I haven't had many Kolsch beers but the ones I've tried had that distinct ale yeast flavor, even if it was more subtle than other types of ale.

Wow, great video idea. I have no lager capable temp control, so I love fermenting kolsch in a cold spot in the garage.

Fun fact, Kölsch is a very heated topic in germany. Many people, mostly inhabitants of the city of Cologne, absolutely swear by it. Many more people however hate Kölsch with a burning passion and absolutely will start fights over it or at least openly disrespect you. Needles to say, most of either party would never notice that they are or aren't drinking a kölsch unless you told them.

LOL would have made a more interesting video if we'd shot this in Cologne it seems :)

Kind of sad tbh. I think a kolsch is a bit more enjoyable than a hefe or belgium ale. It's flat out more refreshing on a hot day

I had an interesting idea for a can you spot the difference episode. Comparing the same beer style from different regions. An example would be a Wisse beer from Berlin, compared to Florida. Or if you wanted to make it really challenging, you could do Trappist beer! With almost all breweries serving a Quad aiming to be the same and taste similar you would have 8 nations to compare. love the content keep it coming!

I like it! Which of these two German lagers is actually imported from Germany.. that sort of thing.

Greetings! I just watched the homebrew challenge between you and the Clawhammer team where you both created a Triple IPA and I cam right over to subscribe! I'm new to all grain brewing and look forward to making some great homebrews. Thanks for the entertaining videos!

I think it all depends on how the kölsch was fermented. At lower temperature it can be lager like but at higher temperature it gives fruity esters that shouldn't be in a good lager.

Great job on picking the beers for the tasting lineup. it would be difficult for me to tell the difference and would also need to finish both to help with my decision🤣

What's the difference between, as you said, a "golden" lager and a regular lager?

That was fun! I’m currently brewing 2 stouts: milk and oatmeal, and will do a side by side just to compare. But you could extend this to a few stouts and see if they can be identified…. Sweet, dry, oatmeal, pastry etc. Whilst I suspect it will be easy to taste the difference could they be identified? Great fresh content (after the challenge!)Martin, thank you. 👍🏻

I know this is random but wondered if you would try brewing a Keptinis traditional Lithuanian style? Just seen someone on a FB homebrew group brew one and thought it was very interesting!

I could tell just by looking at the glasses...Kölsch ist traditionally served in small tall, slender 0.2L "Stangen"...that is if you had enough forsight to serve in a proper glass ;)

Neither looks like Kolsch, too much haze and too cloudy.

In my opinion it comes down to yeast character. All the Kolsch yeasts I’ve fermented with create a light floral and fruity aroma in the finished beer, even if fermented cool. Lager yeasts, ideally, are cleaner.

Crazy fun fact: A Kölsch can only be named Kölsch if it was brewed in Cologne.

None of those is a Kölsch, since not brewed in Germany. It is a protected name here in Germany, like Champagne is in France and all of Europe. Btw. you could tell which is which instantly by the foam. At least that was my reason. We love our foam

Whatever that "Kölsch" can is your holding there, it's definitely NOT a traditional Kölsch from Köln/Cologne. You would not be allowed to sell or label that as a Kölsch in Germany. Kölsch has to be brewed in Cologne.
