Tadano is the ONLY character to which I'll make an exception about disliking the "average guy" trope. His averageness doesn't mean he's devoid of any personality, it's quite the opposite. It's actually a core part of the plot and essencial to the story that he's average, and it was well utilized in this story. Even his design is "average" in a way that's still unique instead of being just another Kirito look-alike.

​@@geekleyLmao, that's bc Chadano is not "average". He is amazing as a person, not bc he's pretty, or hot, or the smartest, or flashy like most male protags in most anime, but bc his personality. If Chadano is average, then I'm way below average.

@@liyansahrtg3646 Well he does describe himself as "average". In fact he's average in looks, and also communication skills (he's not like Komi, but also not like Najimi). I like it because this last one is relevant to the plot, and the anime even jokes about it (e.g. average height, average grades) so his averageness is meaningful and well used, and not just an excuse for audience self-insertion. Of course he's still exceptional at one thing: reading the room (and understanding Komi). Paradoxically, he's so so average that he's not that average. Because if he was truly the most average in the planet, he wouldn't be exceptional or bad at anything AT ALL; which would make him very unique. But since he's so average he can't be unique to the point of being world-record at being average, therefore he's good at this one thing, thus he's not that average. OK, my brain hurts, I'll stop.

I’m so glad you’re reacting to this show! Fun fact, the reason the show feels like it’s so jam packed is because in the manga, the chapters range from 5-10 pages instead of the usual 20ish.

Here's a little fact about the S1 Opening: The flowers are forget-me-nots. In the flower's language, "Forget-me-nots symbolize true love and respect. When you give someone these tiny blooms, it represents a promise that you will always remember them and will keep them in your thoughts. They are also considered a symbol of fidelity and faithfulness." Even the opening ships them.

Finally someone mention it! Komi is sitting alone in the middle of the sea/shore, lonely, and Tadano approaches her with both holding that flower.. It such a beautiful symbolism. The S1 op is the most beautiful op of animes I've watched for me.

it's not underrated. it's just clearly not something for everybody. it's purely a slice-of-life gag manga, so everyone looking for some drama or mystery or any form of plot is gonna be sorely dissappointed. even the romance is very understated. it's good at what it does, but it doesn't do much, which is fine, but just not everybody's cup of tea.

I agree with gamergod. There’s not enough romance or drama for me. I also wish they had just limited the number of characters down to a small group, or at least, make the two main characters a little more interesting.

The characters like Himiko Agari (the shy one), Yamai Ren (the sadist one), Otori Kaede (the airhead one, also she's being one of my favourite as well) and Osana Najimi (the extrovert and jack of all trade one) made this series so much wholesome. Interestingly, I kind of noticed that in some scenes, Shouko Komi kind of looked like Tachibana Akira from the anime After The Rain, but illustrated by other studio.
