The Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis, is the world's largest lizard species, native to a few Indonesian islands. These impressive reptiles can grow up to 10 feet in length and weigh over 150 pounds. Known for their formidable appearance, they have strong, muscular bodies, powerful jaws, sharp claws, and a long, forked tongue used to detect prey. Their skin is rough and covered in armored scales, providing protection from predators and harsh environments.
Komodo dragons are apex predators, primarily feeding on deer, wild boar, and other large animals. They are skilled hunters, using stealth and ambush tactics to catch their prey. Their saliva contains harmful bacteria, causing infections in bitten animals, eventually leading to death. Despite their massive size, they are surprisingly agile and can run at speeds up to 12 miles per hour in short bursts.
These solitary creatures are most active during the day, spending much of their time basking in the sun to regulate their body temperature. Female Komodo dragons lay eggs in nests dug into the ground, and they play no role in parental care after laying eggs.
Due to habitat loss, human encroachment, and poaching, Komodo dragons are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining populations and ensure the survival of this iconic species.
