Excellent, thorough work. Your philosophy of making the bike "better" in ways that you haven't been specifically tasked to do is commendable, and so very rare. As much as I despise dork discs, you're right to leave them on unless you've been asked to them off. When I recently overhauled my friend's bike, I explained what it's supposed to do on a bike, and how it's really more of a lawyer thing than an engineer thing, and I noted that hers was brittle and already cracked (it really was) and that she'd be better off without it. She agreed, and it went away. I remove then from all my bikes (though most high-end bikes do not have them), along with the US mandated reflectors.

Why is it better to leave out the spoke protector?
@rangersmith4652
@rangersmith4652 Жыл бұрын
@@kottelkannim4919 For people who know how keep their rear mech properly tuned, the thing performs no function. It adds weight and to some riders looks, well, dorky. Plus, once it starts to yellow, as they will all do, is is also becoming brittle and prone to breaking. Once that happens, it needs to come out so it doesn't start coming apart during a ride. Bottom line: You'll never see a dork disk on a professional's road bike. If it performed a critical safety function, it would be there.
@kottelkannim4919
@kottelkannim4919 Жыл бұрын
@@rangersmith4652 What is the weight of a spoke protector made of plastic? What will be the outcome of a protector breaking during a ride?
@rangersmith4652
@rangersmith4652 Жыл бұрын
@@kottelkannim4919 It weighs a few grams, perhaps 15? I don't have one handy to weigh, but I know it's not zero, and weight weenies think 15 grams is a pound. If you're riding along and your plastic disk breaks it will almost certainly happen as you're shifting into your lowest gear IF your low gear limit screw is too loose and the disk is all that has been keeping you from over shifting. On that occasion, the chain and the shattered hunks of the disk will lodge themselves between your spokes and your largest sprocket, making your drive train lock up hard. If you're ever had trouble clearing your chain from there, you can imagine how much harder that would be with chunks of plastic added to the issue. For me, and apparently for pro riders as well, simply keeping that low gear screw set properly is all that is required.

I'd love to have a bike shop like bikespeeds in my town, the dedication to the details is absolutely amazing. I know only few shops dedicated to mechanical details like them, probably none that would clean your bike and certainly not a single one that would take care of your paint job. Oh, I live in Berlin. 🤫 I think every customer at bikespeeds is very lucky, you don't get this service quality very often. BTW Love the quality of the sound of the voiceovers. Great job on the service of this bike as usual. Supply chain issues everywhere but I guess the customer didn’t mind and was happy to be riding a good-as-new bike again. I just hit 10.000 km in my main bike and thought that would be a good time for an in depth service but I had upgraded so many parts during this last year that I didn’t really find much to do. I took off so many parts and looked into all the difficult to reach places while I was at it. I even had the break fluid exchanged when upgrading the shifters. But the bike is pretty much done now. I don’t suspect there will be much more exchanging parts in the future so I think I’ll have a good service at around 20.000 km. Ps: a shame the customer didn’t want you to put new bar-tape on it. Would’ve made the bike complete, I think.

Arguably your most enjoyable video yet. I love how much that bike has been ridden, the wear on the chain, cassette and jockey wheels was amazing. excellent job again. when doing part degreasing I don't have as much table space as you do, so I usually put parts in a Tupperware container and spray them in there, less clean up after. And I think on another video not this one ( I have been binge watching) you were talking about video production time. I know each bike is a separate thing and different things on each bike, but say for example your normal 3 shots of t cut, and glym (?) polish then wax? etc once you have those done, you have them, so if your editor is not using them as stock shots, that would save you guys ok only 3 or 4 shot set ups per video, and take him less time to look for them in the edit if he has them set up in a video template project. so say 3 shots per video over say 100 videos just re-doing these shots each time would add up over time. so if he is not doing that already I would suggest that, you have those shots, use them as stock shots. not much more maybe you could use stock shots off, but every little bit helps. IMO. Drew

Yet another great video. Very satisfying to watch that nice bike come back to perfect working order. As for service intervals- I over grease bearings to prevent ingress of water and dirt, and I run waxed chains. That, coupled with fork boots, immortalize most wear components**. Full bearing rebuilds (mostly to check the full bike) and new cables once a year. Wheel inspection + (rim) brake cleaning/adjustment with every chain re-waxing. Negligent with spoke tensioning but I'm in the process of acquiring tools to properly do the job (stand, dishing tool, tension meter). **Kool Stop rim (v) brake pads clean the brake surface and prolong rim life to an absurd. Can't recommend enough.

Beautiful job, quite enjoyed the Hub service in particular. The vinyl stickers is such a nice touch! As part of my intermittent maintenance, I wipe the chain, rear derailleur & jockey wheels of any visible muck/road grit and lube it from time to time and perhaps a quick wash after a rainy/muddy ride. Any other problem I address only when it pops up.

I get my bikes serviced when I can afford it. Generally I try to get them serviced at around 2000 miles that's when I have a new chain, cables, housings and brake pad. It cost over 200 dollars US. I have 7 bikes and I rotate them in for service . Generally one or two per year. Have you gotten many bikes in for service from Unbound gravel this year?

We didn’t get any for this event and after a quick Google hadn’t heard of it before! That sounds like a great servicing routine you have there 🧡

Outstanding job again… just a question if the pedals tighten in the same direction as the pedaling, is it really necessary to torque them up?
