I would have agreed totally until a few years ago when I found out that a proper frame is the basis of any bike. So now I'd rather go with that than with a $200 cheaper bike with an XT derailleur. Even better to have even both of course :-)

I just ordered the honzo from a LBS last week. This was a great review which helped sway my decision! That said, all these comments are lame af considering none of you have ridden it but all experts apparently. It's a great entry level hardtail that can be upgraded later down the road as skills develop. Thanks PB!

From an LBS you get more than just the components, you get service. You also got a nice bike that will last a long time. It's not junk at all. With that being said, it is a fact you can do better spec wise for your money. I don't need to ride it to tell you that.

@@skullsroad3642 I almost bought one when performance was blowing them out at 50% off, but the low stack and short reach was too much for me, even at that price. I love that it has clearance for 3.0 tires (even though the specs say 2.6 max), and I like the slack head angle, but something just felt off riding it (low stack, and something else). I've been wanting to film a video on one, but Marin doesn't bring them to demo events and I can't find a demo I can take out. I've got a 2020 pine mountain in for review right now. Maybe I can get a san quentin when I send the pine mountain back.

I’ve got a Specialized Rockhopper Pro (2018). After increasing the travel to 120mm (Manitou Markhor) it feels super playful and it’s a blast. All it needs is a dropper and a 1x conversion and it will be punching above it’s weight.
@piciu256
@piciu256 4 жыл бұрын
Change the crappy Kwik Toggle damper for abs+ one (just make sure it fits your fork, there is a 32 and 30mm stanchion version) and you'll be blown away how well a 120mm fork can work, you can even take it a step further, play around with the shims, a trail shim stack blows anything that Fox and RS have for XC out of the water in terms of suspension quality.
@anthonywalters7434

Piotr Sulej I think I’ll upgrade to a 35mm stanchion fork of some kind, probably a pike or sid. I don’t care about weight.
@piciu256
@piciu256 4 жыл бұрын
@@anthonywalters7434 Sid is terrible to be honest (very basic damper, comparable to the Recon, just lighter), check out Manitou Mattoc, there is a good promo on CRC often, it's better than a Pike and much better than a Sid. A bit more fiddly to setup though, it's definitely a tinkerers fork, but you sound to me like a person who likes to mess around with stuff :)

@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 жыл бұрын
Its too bad Kona is still stuck on steep head angles on their honzos. If this had a 65* hta, it'd be a game changer. At 68* static, you're at 69* at sag and 70-71* as you hit bumps. Big miss on the tires too. But, I like how they've machined some of the material out of the dropout area. I'll bet this helps the frame give a little and not beat you up as much as many traditional aluminum hardtails. And bravo for short chainstays on a hardtail.
@sapinva
@sapinva 4 жыл бұрын
Trust me, that frame has no give. Might give you back spams though. The steel versions are supposed to have a much nicer ride.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 жыл бұрын
@@sapinva Ive ridden a few alloy hardtails that are more "compliant/forgiving" than some steel frames. Have you ridden an alloy honzo? I haven't. I'd like to try one. The steel honzos I've ridden have all been bone-jarring stiff.
@sapinva
@sapinva 4 жыл бұрын
@@hardtailparty Yes, I had the alloy version. Have not tried a steel Honzo. It's about more than just compliance. I've ridden a few alloy frames that flexed like a wet noodle and still gave me back spasms. Personally think resonant frequency and yield strength has a lot to do with it.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 жыл бұрын
@@sapinva gotcha. Thanks for the info. It hasn't been at the top of my list, but I figured the alloy honzo couldn't be any stiffer than the steel honzo. Sounds like they've found a new level of stiffness with this one.

Had this bike for two months now. It wasnt my first choice, but it's all I could find in an XL. First impressions, I thought it was heavy, not slack enough, naff cable mounting, crap components and no tubeless tyres, and pricey. To be fair the bike rides very well, is pretty quick and I agree it feels like an over grown jump bike. It's been loads of fun on the trails, and my riding has improved massively. My only two issues are the brakes are useless and I am now going to replace the tyres to tubeless. Hope Kona improve it for 2021 as not much thought went into the 2020 model.

I've got the big Honzo with the base spec Al frame. I've got it setup mullet, i35 rear rim with 2.6" DHR II with cush core and an i29 front rim with a 2.5" Assegai DD maxx grip. For my fork, I upgraded the stock 130mm recon to a short offset 2020 Pike ultimate with the new 2021 140mm airspring. I've got some 4 piston ZEE brakes and also went to 203/180mm rotors. These upgrades paired with the big Honzo frame makes for a fairly pedalable bike, capable of nearly any downhill run that's still an absolute blast on mellow flow trails.
@sambolo
@sambolo 4 жыл бұрын
Hardtail doesn’t always mean good and efficient climber. FS bikes are so bedal efficient these days plus they smooten the way up. For example Pole Evolink 158 is in every way and terrain more pedal efficient than my 2017 norco fluid hardtail, and I dont even have to use the climbing switch for that. And Honzo is a relic compared to competitors, no one buys honzo without -2 headangle set and longer fork.
@smokedsalmon3907
@smokedsalmon3907 4 жыл бұрын
When I first moved to FS, I figured it would be way slower up hill. But that extra traction is amazing. And with a good suspension design, I literally never use the lockout on my shock or fork either.

I'm tired of that argument "you get more for your money with a hardtail". The problem is, any brand will always maximise its profits by selling full suspension bikes, and although comparably priced hardtails and full suspension bikes are almost always in favour of the hardtail, it's much harder to find a perfectly spec'd hardtail that compares with a brands most prestigious full suspension models. I feel like most manufacturers just don't put as much effort into their hardtails, either to discourage us from buying them, or to convince us we need that expensive rear suspension to ride harder and faster. Maybe I'm some kind of conspiracy theorist, but all the hardtail reviews I see only ever show a rather mid-range component choice.

I've been riding this bike for 7 years now! kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L It was a great bike the day I got it, put it together, and went on my first ride; more importantly it's an even better bike today. I've ridden trails, street, and skatepark all on this bike. I have replaced almost every part on the bike. Some stuff has broken: derailleurs, wheels, shifter. Everything else were upgrades. The only ramaing original parts are the frame, bottom bracket, and crank set. BB and cranks will be upgraded soon. The geometry isn't great but that is really the only draw back to how good a value this bike is. Even after all the money I've spent upgrading it's still a more affordable bike than I'd have bought from a proper bike shop, especially with full suspension. I've also learned a lot about bikes working on it over the years. It really is one of the best perchases I've ever made and hopefully it'll still be around for another 7 years.

Hi everyone, I was looking at the Kona honzo. My budget is 1500. What's the best bike to buy for my $1,500 budget. I am a total noob. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would be considered level zero for trail riding. Appreciate any help!

Like all Kona's your paying a premium for the name. So basically getting ripped off. My mate has a VITUS SENTIER 29 VRS which costs exactly the same, yet the Vitus has a way better fork, better gears and better brakes. You'd have to have some serious brain damage in order to buy the Kona.

Even if you got a Cannondale Trail 2 for $1575 USD you get XT/SLX and tubeless ready tires. And they're not even a direct to consumer brand, so no excuses for Kona to be so overpriced. Unless the Kona is $1499 CAD then it's an OK deal

@@mabbis8583 I own this Honzo and put 2000km on it already. I was looking for an all-round, fun, nimble trail bike. And the Honzo is exactly that. Trails in my area are not super rowdy. I am tall guy (6'7") and Honzo's geometry with the super long reach, short chainstays is PERFECT for me. No need for more travel or slacker head angle whatsoever. It is very capable. Every time I ride it, I smile. Kona has kept the geo pretty much the same for 8 years, that says something. It's very well balanced bike.
@mabbis8583
@mabbis8583 3 жыл бұрын
@@Iggy52 yes the geo is on point for climbing and descending, i live in the south of chile near a volcano, the trails here are hard, loose and full of magma rocks, the real antigrip and the honzo is pretty capable to shred on them. Its a really good hardtail for the money
