This song is based on a text from Martin Luther 1535, but the danish version is made by the, in Denmark, influential priest N.F.S Grundvig from the beginning of the 1800's. He has made a lot of the hymns who we danes sing in church, or at home, at funerals or around christmas time. He was also influental in creating an education-movement for the lower classes in Denmark like the pessants and servants. It was called "Højskolebevægelsen" ( høj - means high or hill - but its not a highschool.) Even today we still have this type of school. Most danes will choose to go there after highschool before they start their further education. But also seniors go there for a summercourse. You live there for about 6 months while you learn about subjects of your choosing. Usually the subjects are theather, music, art, culture, journalism or handicrafts or textile, but also about social media and computers. You dont get graded for your performance, but you can use the experience you gain there, to gain points for your application for an further education like university. There is also a special songbook called the " højskolesangbogen" from this type of school. It consist of hymns, and old and new songs which most danes have sung in school at some time. Singing at every occation is a very danish thing.
