the korean idol industry is about imagery. it is about selling concepts and dreams to fans. a group is "packaged" and members are fleshed out with personas that complete the group vibe. it is why fans react negatively when their idols do not fit the imagery that they were sold. it is also why idol groups tend to have short life spans. it is also why idol groups work extra hard to maximize their popularity while it lasts. it is a korean thing, and all kpop idol wannabes know what it takes. that is why they undergo years of training and idol trainees are chosen and matched accordingly to fit the group concept & package. all these are easily misunderstood by westerners, who value individualism more.
@PoopyPoop-g5q7 күн бұрын
You said this so perfectly 🤌🏾
@SBBunny937 күн бұрын
I would argue westerns are more about CREATIVE CONTROL than anything. Which individualism goes hand in hand with that. Most western acts get an opportunity to create their own image sound and what they want to display to the public persona wise. Which makes the artist more relatable as well as the music more artistic. Manufactured music never lasts or sells well.

The Idol industry across the board (SK, Japan and China) is about selling a fantasy and providing escapism. Its not, nor has it ever been about music or entertainment. Idols are the original E-Girls and E-Boys. Idols are quite literally a mass produced product too. Every year in SK hundreds of new idols and groups prepare to debut. In Japan, it's thousands because their idol industry is more expensive and has so many sub industries and niche genres within it.

This leads to fans to becoming very delusional, toxic and very obsessed with their favorite idols. They get very upset when they hear that there favorite idol is dating or seen hanging out with someone of the opposite gender and turning it into a dating rumor and eventually a scandal which will become the top trend on the news and social media. Idols literally cannot date, drink or do what adults do without being judged by fans, netizens or the general Korean public. Companies continue to fuel this so called BF/GF fantasy with fans because it brings in huge revenue for them. They don't care if this hurts their idols mentally or socially, they only are about is increasing their profits.

This is why so much idols run to acting after their groups disband or go inactive... Idols ≠ Artist Artist are people who showcase art while being their true authentic selves not some image to 'please' the public. Placing images on idols only feed into the public overly & sensitive criticism
@MG322_887 күн бұрын
Exactly! The entertainment industry within countries with Idols such as SK, Japan and China is a tiered industry. There are actors and normal musicians and artists, and then there are idols. Idols were considered C-tier celebrities for the longest time, and it was only recently that they have started to be seen as something more. Their job is 1st and foremost to sell a fantasy, provide escapism, and form parasocial relationships with fans. The business model for the idol industry is built around this and always has been. This is also why trying to break into the Western industry/ market has never made sense for the industry. Western fans aren't as easily manipulated as Eastern fans are. Western fans are also, as we can clearly see, here going to notice and call out behaviors within the companies and groups that they deem as odd but are considered normal in the East market. It's never going to change though even with international fans calling these things out. The international market is miniscule compared to the domestic markets for the Idol industry. Most of their fans and profits come from domestic and nearby markets in East and Southeast Asia who expect Idols to be a certain way.
@SadiaIslamShouki7 күн бұрын
Not necessarily, Idols deliver singing, Dancing, sometimes they write and produce and sometimes some of them act too,these are art forms nevertheless. Whether It's Korean Idols or Western artists, because of business and market they added some other thing ( which includes persona) to attract consumers. It's absolutely disgusting to see how you guys do not acknowledge their art form. You consume their art form, get entertainment, it’s not necessary to know their true personality, Writers often create fake scenarios to write something, years later you study literature and think, " that might be somehow related to the writer (as literature student,we do try to connect their writing with their real life) and often we ended up find that it’s totally a fiction, a fake story he made up for his piece.
@MG322_887 күн бұрын
@SadiaIslamShouki Not to be rude, but it sounds like you are ignorant to the entire nature of the idol industry and to the culture in these countries. The industry is not and has never been about music or artistry. It's always been about selling a fantasy and escapism. Idols are literally a mass-produced product. Each year, hundreds of idols debut or prepare to debut in Korea, and thousands of idols prepare to debut in Japan. Very, very few make it. It is a mass-produced and cookie-cutter business that has a very specific purpose and business model. Those who become idols also know what they're getting into. And many of them themselves have had parasocial relationships with idols that they were fans of before becoming idols themselves. They've even spoken about it in interviews. The parasocial relationships with idols and fans are intentionally created. That's why so many domestic fans act crazy. They are being sold a fantasy that they use to escape from reality. They become obsessed and fully immersed in that fantasy and spend money and become possessive of the idols feeling as though they are entitled to them. Western Artists and normal musicians in SK and Japan don't do this or have this problem. And that is because it is purposefully crafted for the idols as it is part of their business model.

Idols have never been seen as artists. They've always been a product. They're literally mass-produced and cookie cutter. In South Korea, for example, approximately 300 idols / idol groups are estimated to be prepared to debut each year. Of these 300, maybe 50-100 actually debut of these only a handful actually survive the 1st year. People, especially international fans only think of the big name companies when they think of idols, but there are tons of other medium and small companies pumping out idols, too. That's just Korea, too. Japan has an even greater and expanded idol industry and pumps out roughly 3,000 idols each year across multiple different genres and idol sub-industries. Thus, Idols are quite literally a mass produced product. Its why they aren't considered artists too. They don't have autonomy and are trained and groomed to be a certain way. To appeal to every market and demographic, to be seen as perfect, to be a fantasy and provide escapism.

Y'all so dramatic about this. It's like liking a series on Netflix or a K-drama; it's all artistic. Experienced K-pop fans suspend their disbelief when fangirling but deep down we know it's all part of the show, to be a type of way to fit a concept. K-pop idols are like any other artist in the rest of industries and like any other human, we have different ways to behave depending on the people we are around. The way y'all put it is as if "all k-pop idols are monsters and evil and terrible humans behind closee doors and pretend to be good to fool the fans". Do you think Taylor swift or Zendaya are the same way as they act when giving interviews? Answer is NO, and, does that make them evil masked monsters? The answer is NO. So stop being too overly dramatic about the topic. Idols and celebrities are humans and as such, there are good and bad. Even your neighbor can be someone else from what you think you know. Even a family member. If you feel like a k-pop idol is "scamming you with their fake persona", then leave k-pop and enter another non-K-Pop fandom instead, to see how that goes. You don't need to like k-pop, it's a choice. And that girl just wants attention. I am sure western younsters enter k-pop training companies to be whistleblowers or "insiders", to gain attention by "exposing the k-pop industry". Lol. I agree so many things like beauty standards need to change in k-pop, but i am so bored by these westerns who only enter k-pop just so they can discredit and bad mouth idol peers by indirectly calling them all "fake" and "manufactured". 🥱 Idc for that girl or what she has to say. This isn't new information. This has been known for a long time. Idols have said this before about being assigned personalities that they then have to constantly portray in public. Where they either have to be silent and broody or overly bubbly and cutesy. This practice also can't be equated to the handful of pop artists in the Western entertainment world who became part of groups where character identities were the point of the group. There's only a handful of examples where that can be mentioned.

And this kind of behaviour is EVERYWHERE IN ENTERTAINMENT, Even some Twitch streamers do this for the sake of marketing and entertainment and honestly, this isn't news or surprising to me. I think it surprises a lot of people because frankly most people are illiterate and don't know how to educate themselves at all. So they're all freaking out because they didn't think or bother to read in the first place. NOW HOLD ON, yes this is a wrong practice and no this shouldn't be normalized, BUT That doesn't excuse the fact that this isn't something new for the entertainment industry WORLD OVER AND NOT JUST KPOP. I want to stress this pretty hard that we shouldn't be surprised, but we should also want to normalize being yourself and Yes KPOP companies DO NEED TO MAKE a CHANGE to drop this kind of shit.

Oh come on!! K-POP didn’t just start a few months ago. Anyone whom stans K-POP has known for years about the specific clauses in the contracts, we have all known about the CONCEPTS decided for most individual K-POP idols, we’ve all known about needing to have permission to cut and/or dye one’s hair prior to doing so along with needing permission for getting piercings and/or tattoos. This is due to promotions for album covers, posters the MV and so on and so forth. These companies invest huge amounts of money into these comebacks and into these idols and changing your appearance, without giving the company a heads up toys with their investment, which can change the projection of their foreseeable profits on your comeback. All these things are for a reason it’s about business. Chaeyoung was/is the little rebel and cut her hair very short without permission and got tatted up without permission. The company got upset by her decisions but nothing was done to her bcuz JYPE does care about their idols REGARDLESS of what is being blown way out of proportion. Everybody knows about the strict diet and having to be very thin, and you can’t be getting tanned because it’s looked down upon by the Korean society. LOOK, YOU ARE PRESENTED WITH A CONTRACT IN WHICH YOU, AND YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIAN AND YOUR ATTORNEY(S) READ OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL EVERYONE IS PERFECTLY CLEAR ABOUT EVERY SINGLE WORD IN THAT CONTRACT. THAT IS THE TIME FOR EVERYONE TO DECIDE AND/OR REQUEST ANY CHANGES TO SAID CONTRACT. ONCE AN AGREEMENT IS MET AND THE CONTRACT IS SIGNED, THAT’S IT!! They seem to have a lot more skinship with each other after their contract renewal. Whereas there were a few controversies before about staff telling them to remove their hands from other members' shoulders during live streams and such before.

It's like WWE wrestling, but prettier! Everyone but small children know wrestling is scripted and the wrestlers are playing a character. Kpop idols are no different. They are actors playing a role they have been given. It is a formula that works. To be honest, most people in the world are self-centered trash so the idea of an idol that always looks perfect and sounds perfect is great entertainment because it isn't real life. I understand the draw. I discovered Kpop in 2011 through Girl's Generation. It was during a difficult time in my life, and they were the only thing good I saw in life that made me smile. They were perfect, even in their imperfections. Watching them during that time was like watching a fairy tale. Sometimes, people need a fairy tale or a story with a happy ending. Living vicariously through entertainment has value. You can't go through life beating people up, but you can turn on WWE wrestling and watch the good guys beat up the bad guys most weeks, and it makes people feel good. Much of human history is told in stories with heroes...and yes idols.

What many fans forget is that idols are just normal people who are simply molded into what the masses want. The fans want a certain image and the label fulfills this wish. Because of this extreme desire for a certain image, it is often ignored that idols also have a right to be sad, angry or stressed when they are in public.

Quick question, did you guys REALLY expect 20 years old + to genuinely be mentally 13? Are you guys really wondering how authentic this whole industry is? I have news for you, none of it is, not a single delusional fan in the comment section has any idea who the idols he/she loves so much truly is. And that's fine, as long as we are all aware and it is purely transactional, we provide money, they provide entertainment, the end.

This is hardly any news but as explained at the end of the video as soon as the groups have cemented their place in the industry they get a lot of leeway. A few examples are the fact that idols usually are not allowed to date in their early days but get the freedom to do so when the company trusts them e.g. Jihyo or they can alter their body with tattoos however they want e.g. Chaeyoung. At least in JYP

Yeah, sure some members of some of the groups are "more authentic" ( or the company was smart enough to align the Idol persona with the true one), but for real no one is bothered when a group of mod twenties boys act all cute with plush toys and cutsie hair bands at a fan event 🤷♀️😨 (SKZ Japan for instance). For real WHEN has anyone of you seen a mid twenty year old man behave and look this way? Have a "assigned personality" if you must, but the company should let this personality "grow/develop " with time as the Idol grows. Another issue: if the kpop groups (and Cpop, Jpop, and so on) want to make it in the West......they need to be more authentic. B/c that's what sticks here in the end. Peace out.

International fans confusing idols with normal entertainers and celebrities is funny. There are two different types of music entertainers in the entertainment industries of countries like SK, China, and Japan. 1st there are normal musicians and artists that are similiar to those in the West and then 2nd there are Idols. This is why Idols for the longest time up, until recently were viewed as C-Tier celebrities in their countries. The job of Idols is to sell fantasies, provide a form of escapism for fans, and create parasocial relationships with fans. This this has always been known in the East. It's literally the business model and point of the Idol industry. Idols = the original E-Girls and E-Boys. Selling a fantasy and providing lonely fans with an escape from reality is their true job, not performing music.

I really don't understand what's so wrong about Hyening Kai (for name one idol) being super fantasy and fairy on stage and being super nerdy and bubbly in real life??? I can enjoy an idol who's personality adapts to a concept, to me that's k-pop and that's art. People wanna make it seem like all k-pop idols are mean, bullies and bad people hiding behind a fake persona assigned by their company. There are many things that need to change in k-pop, for sure. But I think scandals like burning sun etc, have contributed to the disillusionment of idols. People are more cautious of this and companies have adapted too. Idols have an image to take care of, which can be extremely stressful for them. But from what I've seen, Americans and Europeans fans mostly, expect them to burp in public, cuss openly and be openly about their sexuality, (validate their every mundain acts to feel their idols are 'relatable') etc; why? Because westerns fans don't know the line between a public and a private life. They want to have access to these idols' lives and real selves 20/7, as if they're (the non asian fans mostly) entitled to these idols' lives just because they are fans. So if San (for example) is so funny and spontaneous in his intimacy but has always presented himself as 'Mysterius', then if int. fans "discover" this shift in personality, they make a huge drama about it starting to complain, etc, using phrases such as "the company forced him to be like this and that" when you don't know if it was a mutual decision. Lol. Whatever. I'm just exhausted of this new generation of fans. K-pop was SOOOOOOO much fun before BTS made k-pop so famous, thus attracting this horde of t*xic and immature fans to ruin k-pop fandoms with all their critiques and complaints about what they drink, if it supports ¡sr@€£, zyonistz, blah blah, or if the companies don't let them twerk, blah blah ..... Lol. I want k-pop to go back to 2013 😂😂😂

She had a pretty bland personality and I had to mention my wealth before she even showed any interest in engaging. I also wanted to mention we are about the same age and I wasn’t much older, taller, or anything, and I don’t look very intimidating. I was warm, kind, and respectful and she just wasn’t nearly as kind as I thought she’d be. And no, she wasn’t tired because she had told her group mate she had gotten 10 hours of good sleep the night before.

To be deeply honest, this disingenuous part of K-pop is why I like it. As a child I was very stubborn and unashamed to be myself, but this worked out horribly for me. As I grew older I realized honesty was not an option. It feels like the weight of a huge system is forcing me into a certain shape, and when I see that in idols it's very relatable. And Idols are my role models because I know how harsh their circumstances are and what they have to put up with.

I think this is cultural issue as well. I have seen Koreans changing their birth name quite regularly. It is as if you put on a new skin with a new name. This could be a cultural aspect. For most of us non koreans changing your birth name is an extreme measure. Your name is everything - history and identity. It's hard to change names like that. I believe the trainees changing names and taking on a new personality is not inauthentic. And I think East Asians are culturally suited to compartmentalise themselves better than westerners. They can easilly switch between their private and public faces without having any conflicts or thinking they are being inauthentic. This trainee who is a westerner is just not suited for that imo.

A person on her own can't develop a self. A person (or group) among others must maintain a performance in front of them. This is the case for everyone upon social interaction, whether it's person-person or artist-audience. In k-pop, idols always portray an idealized version of themselves, whether the company mandates it or not. Fans, the audience, find this disconcerting because it disturbs their conception of the show. The duality frightens them. It's like there is a front stage where the fantasy is displayed for them to witness, and a back stage of which they are ignorant. I hate to break it to you but there's always a back stage in interaction. Idols among themselves are not idols in front of audience. (Even among themselves they display a performance, but a different one). As I said this is the case for everyone of us, we are performers. This doesn't mean there's a real self which we hide, another we display to others. Authenticity is a myth. The self or personality is not something static that lurks behind the mask. What is displayed is both real and calculated. What is hidden is both real and imagined. Prescribing personalities to idols is obviously a sad (hyper)reality, but let's face it this is just one small facet of neoliberalism (or late capitalism or hyperreality or simulation or consumer society or whatever u like)

This is Getting Exhausting. Being An Idol is A Job with Peaks which many could ONLY DREAM OF. It is JUST A JOB WHICH PAYS FOR YOUR GOOD LIFE. Sacrifices is A Norm in any job. A Labourer...with their body aches n pains without any medical coverage. Top students sleeping less than 3 hours a night... Idols with Strict Rules just like A School. They need to FIT AN IMAGE WHICH SELLS. If IT IS JUST TOO HARD. WALK AWAY. Having A Persona...created by the company provide safety n privacy to artists. When Fans start hating. It is Nothing personal. It is NOT YOU. It is The Image. Marketing n Promotion Team FAILURE not the idols themselves. Life is Tough. Just Get A Helmet n push through if this is what you want. Being An Idol is A 3 to 7 years thingy. It is NOT A LIFE SENTENCE. After all said n done. If you are truly A Great Artist NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE... The World is Open to YOUR VERSION OF YOURSELF to find success.

I am a Stay too. The thing with Stray Kids is that they have so much content aside from their music videos that it would be difficult for them to always be "on" so we see many real moments with them. I don't think they are faking their personalities. But of course they are going to show their best sides for the cameras most of the time. But this is true of every celebrity. No we don't know them so we will never know if what they show us is 100% true self. Even people that are not celebrities though can hide beneath personas so that is just how things are. It's not worth focusing on and feeling sick over.

SM created a mysterious personality for EXO as whole group 😂Which is why they rarely send them to any variety shows because members end up destroy SM's given persona. Because of this shit our 2nd fandom created a whole new narrative that EXO are bunch rude and arrogant people who bullied their boys😂 also so many ex that fandom says they think EXO do not have any personality and they are amazed by how funny members are.But Thankfully EXO members are very smooth with their stage persona and off stage persona from very early on, since they do not go to a lot of variety show non fans don't know but fans are well aware. I think this is same scenario with all the older groups, they expose their real persona when they feel comfortable with their fans

BTS is a good example of how it’s a stupid practice. Their first couple of years after debut, their image was corny as hell. They seemed to collectively decide as a group, heck with this, and their chaotic sibling energy blew up, and their authenticity shone and probably made them far more popular than they ever would have been had they stuck to the “bad boy” hip hop PR vibe pushed off on them.
