Considering South Korea's geopolitical location, this is a natural outcome. They are bordered not only by North Korea but also by China and Russia, which means that even if the new Cold War ends, they will have to continuously invest in the defense industry. Furthermore, South Korea is an export-oriented manufacturing nation, and since they already have high-tech companies, they hold an advantage in defense exports. After all, a crisis can also signify an opportunity.

They do it for business - and for their own defense against the North. It is not South Korea's intention to engage in foreign conflicts and soak up retaliation strikes. It is in their law to refuse to deliver weapons into war zones. Russia has already warned South Korea off to ship weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. And they will obey these orders, as the US will never ever leave restrictions from his weapons to strike deep into Russia. As Charles De Gaulle said: «Countries don't have friends. Japan was the first developed country in Asia. At the premium of developed countries, media outlets around the world had their Asian branches in Japan, and they translated and sent Japanese anti-Korean articles into their own languages. South Korea did nothing wrong, but it has always been described as a backward country and a bad image, not to cooperate with, for a long time, malicious articles by Japan's anti-Korean media and foreign media that responded to it. I learned that South Korea is not a newly discovered country, but an amazing country that has broken through the interference of Japan and China. And as I learned about Korea's long history, I learned how bad Japan and China are. In particular, I was very disappointed with Japan for not reflecting on it.

So, from my understanding, one of the big draws of South Korea is its willingness to engage in technology transfers and to cooperate towards local production at the buyers' home country. These, I suspect, might leave the South Korean model a somewhat short-term strategy. The jobs created by a new contract are likely temporary and eventually due to transfer to the buyers' country. Likewise, combined with technology transfers, the buyer is then less reliant on continued purchases from South Korea / no need for additional contracts for the product. Instead, South Korea would have to search for a new customer; except now with a potential new competitor providing a similar product.
@PotomacPotomacPark-tv7cz9 сағат бұрын
You missed the point. These are ongoing, open blanket contracts. Even when countries sell weapon systems with technology transfer, there are still restrictive contingency clauses in place. These clauses typically require buyers to procure core technologies in future purchases. No country would freely offer its proprietary technologies without safeguards or limitations. Licensors do not provide "comprehensive" unrestricted access to their most sensitive, top secret technologies and innovations.
@evilwelshman7 сағат бұрын
@@PotomacPotomacPark-tv7cz With many of the contracts, they are signed with the view of setting up factories local to the buyer's country, typically in partnership with a local manufacturer, with the aim of developing local industry, and eventually 100% local manufacture. Yes, it is under license but it is still local manufacture and potential competition in the export market. Cases in point: 1) Turkey developed the Altay tank following technology transfer of the K2 tank from South Korea, and is now marketing it for export with Qatar being a buyer. 2) Likewise, the Polish Krab is derived from the K9 howitzer chassis following technology transfer and Poland has been able to send them to Ukraine without any ire from Russia towards South Korea.

@PotomacPotomacPark-tv7cz4 сағат бұрын
@@evilwelshman OMG, I’m relieved they don’t share your overly simplistic view. While the product will be 100% locally manufactured, all proprietary components must still be sourced from the licensor under strict non-compete agreements. Even if I explained this from the perspective of a specialist in patents and intellectual property, you’d continue to rely on your pie in the sky theories, suggesting that Koreans would give away their proprietary technologies to future competitors. A relevant example is Germany's sale of the Taurus cruise missile system to South Korea under a "complete and comprehensive technology transfer agreement." Despite this, Germany retained ownership of the core technology’s proprietary patents and maintained the right to manufacture and sell key components to the licensee, thereby protecting their local infrastructure and commercial interests. As you correctly noted, military technology is not comparable to consumer products like beauty items. The costs of R&D and establishing production for critical components are immense. Consider Apple: while they claim that iPhone components are designed and manufactured in the U.S., they don’t publicly admit that the OLED display screen and the chips operating it are manufactured by their direct competitor, Samsung. However, due to a non-compete agreement, Samsung remains their sole supplier for these components. Why would countries like Korea, the U.S., France, Germany, or the UK openly share their proprietary technologies with other licensees? Oops, I just shared too much confidential information!

[Fact Check] 1) The Pronunciation of LIG is "L, I, G'. It is NOT 'lig". 2) As for the Ballistic & Air Missile Defense(BAMD), Hanhwa is producing the radar(which is a very powerful AESA,) and the launch vehicle. LIG produces the interceptor missiles and the fire control system. Acutally it was LIG which integrated the total system. 3) LIG is specialized in missiles. Most of the missiles/interceptors are being developed and produced by LIG, except those guided rockets/missiles for Chunmoo MLRS, which is produced by Hanhwa. Hanhwa also produces ballistic missles, i believe. One of the reasons why South Korean defense industry is strong and has great potential is the fact that big companies are leading it, even though defense does not make a lot of money. For example, even Lockheed Martin's annual revenue is around 70 billion, while that of Samsung is around 300 billion and Hyundai motors about 200 billioin. It was not until recently that defense divisiion of a company makes meaningful profits. Just imagine Lufthanza for highend UAVs. Vokswagen's related company for battle tanks. Intel for secret custom-made chips for the military. For example, Poongsan is famous for ammos and shells. However, its real biz is non-fero metals, a huge business, dawrfing ammos and shells.... Ammos and shells have been 'a contribution to the country' or 'a way of patriotism'.

Ignoring this principle not only veers into the realm of propaganda but also undermines responsibility and integrity.
