US forced Taiwan to terminate it's nuclear programs twice, in the 60s and 80s. Balance of power would be different if Taiwan has nukes now.

Never understood why europe allowed so many of these immigrants into their countries in the first place as there are plenty of Islamic countries near from where they fled from and the question is why did they not seek out those countries or on the flip side why did those countries not take them in.

KMT leans toward China. KMT was the nationalist coming to Taiwan after being defeated in the mainland by the communist. The party prefers eventual unification with China even though the CCP was its enemy. KMT is a minor party now in Taiwan, but can still often work againt the governing party DPP on military buget, defense acquisition, and policy of military service, etc. It is a problem on defense and forign polocies.

The reason Taiwan spent less in Defense is because the former president Ma Ying-jeou is Pro China. He even cut down the military service from 1 year to 4 months only. Ma Ying-jeou is the Taiwan version of Viktor Yanukovych. The Pro US president former president Tasi gradually increase military budget and roll back military service to 1 year.

I would argue that the amount spent on defense should not only count the Military spending. In a free and open democracy, free speech is a double-edged sward, PRC knows that very well. On the Internet and in the media, there has always been an ongoing war(I do think war is an adequate term to use) in terms of swaying the direction of the people's opinions. If you count all the efforts the general public put in in fighting against such "attacks," the amount of GDP spent in defense would be much higher. PRC prefers to buy Taiwan than taking by force, if PRC can utilize information warfare to sway the opinion their way, that's what they will do, and that's where Taiwan need to put effort in defending itself. Also, as I look into different industries, the development of Taiwan's economy appears to have been built in a way that forces other like-minded democracies to help in the event of any trouble. There is a saying "Democracy doesn't put food on the table," which I feel is part of the reason why Taiwan is developing in the way it is. Since so many democracies have capitalistic economies, money speaks louder than ideology(sadly.) To ensure like-minded democracies will come to aid, putting a higher amount of GDP into creating such economic dependencies is a reasonable defense strategy. (US-China trade war also emphasizes why this is important IMHO) In terms of raw military power, PRC's simply too large for Taiwan to justify putting all spending into just military, it has to get creative. In recent months, it would seem PRC has gone all out on destabilizing Taiwan from within, the chaos on the Internet/media has never been so bad from my experience.(maybe I'm just getting deeper into the topic, I don't know) Side note, Taiwanese people do seem to be more aware of information warfare in general compared to western countries such as the US. (opinion, not fact)

The key to Taiwan's defense depends on their national identity and the commitment of the people and the army to resist China at all costs. Ukraine is proving this today, though admittedly with the latest Western weapon systems to support them, but Vietnam managed to defeat the U.S. military with a fraction of the hardware and trained personnel arrayed against it. If the Taiwanese people fight with that level of intensity and sacrifice, they could beat China in a grueling war of attrition, if not then is doesn't matter how much hardware they purchase or build.

You left out a huge fact: there are only 12 beaches suitable for an amphibious landing in Taiwan. ALL OF THEM are rigged with oil pumps that will set them all on fire in the event of an invasion. There is also the contingency plan to destroy the TSMC fab plants in the event of an invasion.
@myplane150
@myplane150 10 сағат бұрын
Let's see what happens if Trump wins and tells Taiwan that we will not defend them. Or we finish the Semi-conductor Fabrication plants in the US and no longer really need TSMC. I bet their spending will go up dramatically. The US might have made a mistake to say they would fight for them (I wrote this early in the video and you folks said the same stuff... nice). They should buy more missiles (anti-air and anti-ship) than they will ever need and invest in Submarines. Stop China in the Straight.

Visual Politik always falls for Trump's bluffs hook, line, and sinker. His strategy is to play both sides. He tells allies to meet their defense agreements, or he might cut them off, and then he turns around and tells his enemies that he might just start an open war with them. It's the fact that everybody thinks he is volatile enough to do either that makes allies feel unsafe and enemies feel unsure. He might be a paper tiger, but nobody is willing to call his bluff. It certainly works better than letting your enemies think you won't do anything and your allies think you will, and then waiting till conflict has already broken out to provide military aid.

That would depend on who's seated behind HMS Resolute, after the next US elections. President Biden would help the Taiwanese. President Trump's assistance would depend on how much money Taiwan has put into his personal bank account before the invasion. Otherwise as far as he's concerned Taiwan should be managed from Beijing not from Taipei City.

President Biden promising to defend Taiwan is as credible as President Obama promising to act against Bashar Assad should he use chemical weapons on civilians..Assad called the American bluff and used chemical weapon on his people. America needs to rebuild its industrial base and restore American people’s faith by honoring the American dream…these are pre-requisites to prepare America for emperor Xi’s campaign for the “glorious rejuvenation of the Chinese race”.

The combination of Chinese aggression and bullying of its neighbors and the increasing unreliability of the US as an ally makes "going nuclear" a pretty obvious choice for both Japan and S Korea. Both countries have the technical capability and, in the case of a Trump second term, it seems almost inevitable that both countries will choose to develop nuclear weapons to deter Chinese aggression. And both Japan and S Korea already have the missile technology needed to make nukes a credible deterrent.

The status quo has been in existence since 1949. However, in the last few years, the US, which is a country that has agreed that there is only one China, is doing what it has done all across the world, find a way to sell weapons. Of course, they do not care how many people are killed when these wars break out. It is America's play book for centuries. China invading Taiwan just shows how silly and uninformed America and its accomplices are. Does a country invade itself? Americans should at least learn something from their own history. For, it is western europe and America that have invasion the chief part of their foreign policy. The Chinese are intelligent people and they have more than 5000 years of wisdom that allow them to conduct themselves honourably at home and abroad. That cannot be said about American and its criminal accomplices in western europe. They should be learning from China on the matters of public policy and international relations.

Interesting perspective from an outsider, but most Mexicans don’t consider him a failure because they aren’t concerned with the drug epidemic or the migration crisis in the US to put it bluntly. Mexico has problems of their own aside from organized crime believe it or not, and you will be left alone anyway for the most part as long as you don’t get involved with the criminals in the first place, for the average citizen at least. AMLO has pretty much course shifted us away from an oligarch-run country who sells Mexico’s resources to their most generous benefactors and spend their tax money on luxury goods and private jets, to one were our resources are our own and contribute to the well being of the citizens. He also stands up for us on the political and commercial stage, like refusing the US’ deal to sell us genetically modified pig feed as corn which is a big part of our diet, and pushing back against predatory companies that abuse the environment like Vulcan Materials. He has given us hope and an ideal of excellence to strive for

It's much simpler. They think the United States will 100% defend them. Problem is, they don't understand American politics: Now Republicans who hate China will 100% defend them with the full weight of American military might to the end. But Democrats are China friendly globalist socialists. If the Democrats are in charge when China invades, the response will be either late, botched, not enough, unprepared, all of the above, or just a token condemnation and call for peace while telling the American people "It's not worth American lives". Taiwan better defense spend like their survival depends on it. Because it does.
