Before this, he lived such a hard and difficult past, and that past life and sudden fame is what led him to do what he did (doesn't excuse it, but you can see why he did what he did). Money was so scarce for him and he wanted to use that fame because he knew fame didn't last that long, so to keep being relevant, he did what he did.

Im Korean and he went through more than living alone for 10 years. He actually found his mother and went to her but his mother rejected him because she already had a rich husband and a family... he also thought of committing suicide but a music teacher he met told him to sing and be famous to show his mother to show he wasnt just a mistake in the world. As a Korean he is my forever role model. I absolutely respect you sung bong choi👍👍👍

I had watched this young man sang couple times now. Every time I watch him sang I cry. I was an orphan too, my father passed away when I was 6 or 7 years old. My mother got married and let us children alone. My siblings and I are struggle to survive during many times of trials. When we came to America in 1977 after the Vietnam War, we cannot speak and write English at all. We live a life in the lost world in America. Back in my teenager year with very limited English and have no money at all and little food to eat. The only lunch and breakfast I ate is at school in the morning and lunch only. Came home with empty stomach over night and wait till the next day back to school. People do not understand how orphans kids suffer before they become one. Thanks God I survived. Every time I watch this young man sang it always remind me to stand strong and be yourself, love yourself and think positive and thrive for the success you dream to achieve in life. People will push you down, but God will always raise you up no matter what people think of you. Dream big and never ever give up! God is good and awesome!

I believe karma is 100% real in that sense, if you put negativity out into the world, how could some of that not come back to you? There are young men who have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their bravery and sacrifice and selflessness in battle. It’s not the age of a person that determines maturity. Character, devotion to one’s creed, resilience, and upbringing are more important than a person’s age. What inspires you and who inspires you? This young man came from nothing. He was homeless. He maintained his dignity and humility. He persevered. That is enough to inspire me. Young people should ASPIRE to be like him.

I saw this video about 9 or 10 years ago! My heart hurt for his story, but I think all that life experience and pain went to his singing which made him unforgettable and amazing. Its a shame he is lost so soon at just 33. May he rest in peace and wish for his next life where he can have the adoring family he deserved and be happy!

저도 이청년을 안지 1년 되었습니다 성악으로 직업을 가지기에는 그의 기본이 너무나 부족해서 교사나 기타 음악쪽으로 직업은 구하기 어려운 현실이였을겁니다. 또한 이경연에서 1등을 하지못했습니다 그래서 상금이 거의 없었으리라 생각됩니다 이때 반짝 조금 알려져 hv출연으로 조금 생활할 수 있었으나 잠깐 대중에게 알려졌을 뿐 그후 생활하기가 어려웠겠죠 다시 막노동을 해야만하는 현실이였겠지요.. 같은 한국사람으로 많이 미안합니다 이제사 그의 존재를 알았다는것이... 매일밤 공원에 운동 하러가면 밤하늘에 유난이 밤짝이는 별이 있습니다 그 별을 최성봉 별로 이름 지었어요 그래서 그 별을 보며 슬픔과 아픔을 달래봅니다..

I just listened to him again today. I was curious about where he is now. Surely he should have won. I stopped the video of him singing and prayed that God would save him and that I would meet him in heaven and give him the longest hug. When I just learned he passed away last year, I cried!. I also had a very difficult childhood; wished I knew better and had run away!, to Greece or Cyprus where my parents are from and get adopted by parents who would love me and change my name. I am a survivor of at least 7 attempts of suicide that started when I was 5 years old. Then when I was 23, I was ready to end my life again; later that year I met Jesus, who came into my life. Thank God!...

This incredible young man reminds me of Ian Curtis, the late singer of Joy Division. His story and performance brought many tears to my eyes. That lady totally crumbled. Right when you think he's done, he comes in after that bridge like a wrecking ball and give one of the most soulful performances in the history of mankind. Korean people certainly don't live their lives making excuses. Even at the very bottom as many have been, they give it all to get to the top. I can watch this 100 times and then watch it again 100 times more
