In my opinion, it's okay when people tell you to lose weight to BE HEALTHY not to be pretty. If being pretty means to be underweight, i wouldn't abide by their 'advice'. But if losing weight to be healthy, yeah i would take that advice if it's proven that i'm overweight or obese. Because if it's the latter, I think it would be safe to say that the adviser care for my well being. Of course it's just my opinion in social etiquette because that's what I've been taught to at school. Like you i'm also pressured by family mostly (thankfully my friends are very nice) who tell me that i'm fat and all. It's really sad especially when it comes from your parents. Sometimes, I'd cry so much because they keep comparing me to my siblings who are underweight. I have an optimum weight. My bmi is normal but they're telling me i'm fat. That's not what i've been taught. I've been taught that normal bmi is the best one could achieve for an optimum life. Honestly if my teacher hadn't told me that, i would've probably be depressed right now. It really clicked my logic. Being underweight is a problem and being overweight is also a problem. it has ALWAYS been like that. We can't have anything too much or too little. that's just how life works. I know it's hard to love yourself and be courageous when those who are dear to you speak ill of you. I know that too well. But you have to be brave and love yourself. And by loving yourself i mean to be healthy and life a happy life. Your family does matters to you but so does you. I'm a muslim and quran had taught me that we shouldn't do anything that would be bad for ourselves. as a religious person i took that advice in every thing i do. because no matter what. i mean no matter what, god is first. anyway, be strong and be courageous. I'm here to support you. If you're doing the right thing, even when everyone's against you, you're doing really great and just know that there ARE people who would support you in your right decision. Maybe they just are not supposed to be there yet. :)

Ever watch “My 600lb Life”?? Those people also thought they knew their health best, until their doctors told them they’re going to die soon if they don’t change. Some of them would still be calling fast food delivery, even after being told that. These days, we’re encouraged to believe whatever we want to believe; it’s apparently true as long as we “feel” it is. I hope their doctors agree with their self-diagnoses, otherwise, they have no meaning.

Poemi10304 No, typically those people know it's their own fault but just don't know where you start to go back to how they were. Stfu and stop acting like you know their bodies more than them. At first glance, everyone thinks I'm fit because I'm 5'4 at 115 lbs and never gain weight. When in reality, I just have a fast metabolism and eat like shit. You can't tell someone's health just by looking at their body. And even if they are obese, guess what? Calling them pigs and to drop a few lbs, isn't going to help.

I live in South Korea and even as someone who is not plus size but just curvy (at least for western standards) I can barely find clothes here, especially pants.. I always buy my clothes in Japan as they have quite a big variety of very fashionable big size clothes - even inside of normal stores. Inside of Korea I have to relate on H&M or Uniqlo but even there, it's usually hard to find an XL or sometimes even L size..

Like I wear an L size here in pants and even then they are so tightttt. I can also only shop at H&M or Forever21 for my sizes and its always the biggest size in pants. When I go back home I small compared to other girls my age but in Korea I feel overweight. Seriously messes with your mind. I cant even imagine how difficult it must be for these girls.

According to BMI tests yes weighing less than 50kg and being 170cm is considered underweight, but then again, underweight doesn't mean unhealthy, it just means you're not at the point that is considered "perfect weight" for someone your height. In the same way that overweight is not the same as obese. You can be healthy and still be a bit overweight or underweight, but then doctors wouldn't advice it.

I one day bought some clothes from an online Korean store and stuff fit him without needing to be altered. Clothing should be inclusive to the country it is catering. It does not make sense for them to cater globally since we all have very different body types. But, plus sized people across the board do have issues. Even in the US.

Eyes are a liability for these shallow people. My preference means I'll initiate, but I can always be receptive by befriending and enjoying someone in a new light when I learn more, especially if I feel loved, rather than an ATM. The only problem with activism is when it eventually decays into slacktivism, and they become hypocritical or one-dimensional. This happens to damn near every movement after 5-10 years of the same ideas, which won't update for the times.

I wish women like this in the media existed when I was a young girl. Being Korean and chubby was really hard because the culture there is so much harsher than it is even in America. It isn't about health, I don't think. Health is extremely important but it's also extremely important to treat others with dignity and respect regardless of their size. We talk a lot about physical health to use as a 'gotcha' against heavier people, but do we ever think about mental or emotional health? Be kind, be loving, and mind your own business lol

I bought swimwear from yesstyle. I bought size XL. The bottom was like a U.S. size XS/S, and the top was like a size M/L. WTH?!
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 6 жыл бұрын
This is my problem with YesStyle sizing too. I have a lean body mass of 48 kg so weighing 50 kg at 165cm is never going to happen (you die below 10-13% body fat). My body composition now is considered in the healthy range and I wear a EU size 42-44. I could lose another 5kg, 7kg at the most. Most Yesstyle skirts stop at 76cm, so they don't fit me. And the 76cm might be called 5XL or something. Different worlds I guess. I had the same size trouble with japanese lolita fashion brands, if I wormed my way inside a dress or skirt it would still be way too short hitting me mid thigh or 15-20cm above the thigh when it's supposed to be knee length. If you are taller and wider (without being overweight) than the average korean woman or japanese woman, it's time to accept that these things weren't made with our bodies in mind. Which is fine. But to not fit into the 5xl whilst I can shop in the regular size range in my own country is all kinds of weird.

I'm seeing lots of comments are dedicated to say whether they are attractive or not, but the point is they aren't arguing that ppl should to find them sexually attractive. They want ppl to treat them without bias or "concerns" on their body or appearance. Their goal is to establish more choices of life for their body size w/out getting ashamed. They are pointing out society's ignorance which is saying fat women aren't the real women and they don't or shouldn't exist. Women do not have to be appear attractive to men and vise versa. Not everyone's goal is to have a sex or get married and have a child. No matter who it is, let them live their life with dignity wout getting ashamed.

This is very unfortunate that these women haven't and are not able to find many stores or brands that are considerate and caring of them in their country. That makes me very sad 🙁🙁 Also, quite upset. Every body is different,especially for women, we have soooo many beautiful and shapes and figures , and should have the ability to celebrate and appreciate and Love and be loved with our many forms.

But that is the norm there, because they have almost no overweight people compared to many developed countries. So they’re the odd ones out, unlike in the U.S., where there are a highly significant amount of overweight people. That is even more sad and upsetting because of the health problems that probably come with it, don’t you think? And the stores/brands aren’t being inconsiderate or uncaring, they’re realistic as to what is going to sell the most, as most companies are. That’s what marketing research is for. If it’s not profitable, they’re not going to make it. You just have to find the right specialty and/or online shop for it. Buy international brands even. Maybe certain men’s clothing, as they’re most likely roomier. A lot of us go through similar issues. You just gotta make it work. Or move to an overweight country, I suppose. Then they’ll be big fish in a sea of big fish, rather than big fish in a pond of little fish.

I dont understand what the big deal is... They can shop online. My shoe size is a wide, and i cant find that in regular shops so i have to order online. You saw the graph: less than 5% of ppl need plus size clothing in korea. Its not the shops fault they dont stock it. Its not a good business model to cater to that small of an audience. Especially when they have to compete with online.

Poemi10304 I somewhat agree with that, I do think it's an extremely good thing that they have less obese people, even if the cause for that is because of discrimination. However they most likely have a higher rate of anorexia instead. Either way it's all bad and I think we need to not discriminate just for how someone looks, and instead only advise people if they're not eating enough or too much, which is what brings about these problems.
@yvonnedowns2068
@yvonnedowns2068 6 жыл бұрын
Everyone is saying that's such a small audience to cater to and it's not a smart business model. 1) it's called a niche market and has its benefits, 2) 4.7% is a little over 2 million people is south Korea who are being excluded, and 3) a store does not have to cater to one specific market. Is it easier? Yes because the focus is direct, but expanding a product line or inclusivity of products can be very beneficial. Especially in such a small market. Just to clear a few things from a business stand point.

I’ve been morbidly obese since I was EIGHT years old, I have never been a size 2. And I don’t need to be a health professional to recognise that even being mildly overweight has huge negative effects on your health. Do you need to be a health professional to recognise that smoking is bad for you? Or does the research and scientific evidence speak for itself? Did you know obesity is the second highest leading preventable cause of cancer, second only to smoking? What is your definition of an intelligent conversation then? Ignoring scientific facts about what extra weight does to your body in the name of being ‘accepting’?

Living in a country like America which is 'great' and 'free' but people cannot even afford to go to nutritionist to lose their whale like looks. Stop bashing other countries who DO care about health and beauty and just go back to your country. Why do western people always seem to look at other countries as more 'backwards' the binary dichotomies are so clear and you guys need to stop with this problematic point of view

Then we both ended up going on the same school hike up a munro. I can't tell you how smug I was when she couldn't even make it half way 😏 Assuming someone is not as healthy as you because they are bigger than you is just ignorant. I wish people would stop using health to justify their lack of attraction to someone. Even if they aren't healthy what business is it of yours? Of course it's OK not to be attracted to a person, it's literally human nature, but is it that hard to just not be a cunt to them? 😅

If you're not a health practitioner, it really is not in your element to say anything about anyone's bodies. Yuju Waterbottle There are people who are naturally chubby and are considered „overweight”, then they starve themselves, work out too much and are depressed because society pressures them. I mean look at all thode idols who look „thin and healthy” and then look at how they eat (eg the „IU” diet) There are tons of different body types. Some are naturally chubby or „fat”, some are naturally skinny. You cant immediately tell how a person eats or how much she works out just by looking at their bodies. Judging people who dont fit a stupid standard is doing nothing but making the process of normalizing a variety of body types slower.

Tucna Fucna in theory, your ideal weight could be calculated by subtracting 110 so your height BUT it doesn't work for every body types. Some have heavy bones, some carry weight mostly on the lower parts of their bodies. And NO. No one is allowed to judge you. Some people are "fat" because of a sickness, depression or something else and it's not written on their forehead, who gives you the right to judge. I have a friend who is underweight even though she eats like 10 person, people would call her anorexic when it's not true, this is not right. Judging people's appearances is wrong, it is not something that should be normalised.

Imma walk my 48kg ass into a Korean clothing store and find nothing that fits me, you know why?? Because IM SHORT BUT HAVE A LOT OF BODY FAT. According to their beauty standard, I fit the weight expectancy, however, I have fat everywhere, they think just because you are 50kg or less you will be "slim". They didn't think about height did they? Yeah I'm less than 5'5 and weigh 106 but I swear to you all I am not xS or S. It worries me to think what weight I should be since I am already am light as hell but have fat everywhere. In order to be slim... will I need to be 100 pounds?? 99? Less???? This rule is beyond stupid. Imagine how many girls have put themselves through starvation, girls who would medically be considered underweight if they weighed 105 or 110. Say, a tall girl or a girl with a body type that naturally produces more body fat, just so she can fit this beauty standard. I was once very underweight and it was the lowest point of my life, really, I weighet 95 pounds and was 5'1 but boy I would have been praised for my slimness because "I fit the beauty standard". This is toxic. The ideal body should be a healthy body. Not a "slim" or "skinny" body. Those factors do not define health. These women may very well be healthier than the 48kg women who might be underweight. Ya'll feel me? It all depends on body type and height.

im gonna stick to my original statement but thank you for expressing your opinion. to me the girls in the video are not average weight or "normal" (there is not even a normal, not fat nor thin nor any size is more normal than the other to me) they are overweight. so im gonna stick with my opinion that there should be more inclusive sizes so that everyone can find fashionable clothes they are comfortable in. The girls in the video are considered fat in any country really, the bad thing is that people think that -fat= not beautiful-. Everyone, fat and really thin girls should be considered beautiful and shouldn't be judged by any society for their appearance.

Hi, would it change your opinion if you knew that the low obesity rate in Korea doesn't just mean that there are less overweight people, it also means that there are lots of Koreans (especially young girls) who are dangerously underweight and suffer from eating disorders and body dysmorphia? Personally I struggle to see how a low obesity rate alone can be a good thing. It doesn't mean that there are no health issues, just different ones, on the other end of the scale.

From a quick Google I just found an article from 2016, intervewing a professor of mental health who estimates that 1/4 young Korean women suffer from EDs (pub.chosun.com/client/news/viw.asp?cate=C01&mcate=&nNewsNumb=20160420131&nidx=20132). And another from this year (2018) that estimates that 1/10 Korean women in their 20s are at high risk of EDs (www.womennews.co.kr/news/view.asp?num=129710). There are official stats as well but usually these only count people who have specifically had hospital treatment for EDs, so they don't get the full scope. I also remember reading somewhere that after Japan, Korea has one of the fastest increasing rates of ED. I'm not sure familiar you are with Korean culture in general, but diet culture is extremely pervasive in South Korea, and it's not considered rude to tell to someone's face that they should lose weight, or that they look fat, so I would argue that a lot of people probably don't even realise that they have disordered eating habits, because it's so normal and common. This was several years ago now but I was reading a Korean fashion magazine once (think Vogue, Elle, etc) and they had a spread asking people on the streets what their best diet/fitness secrets are. (CW: eating disorders, bulimia) There was one college student who said that she uses a toothbrush to throw up her meals a few times a week, and the magazine straight up published it! As a diet tip! Like, that's a major red flag for bulimia, and where I'm from (New Zealand) no magazine would publish that unless they were talking about the dangers of ED and had resources to hotlines and places you could go to get help. So yeah, the absence of obesity doesn't necessary equal health.

suga kookie with tae I think she was more talking about diet. Of course there are going to be people born who naturally stay really thin, and as long as we are healthy it shouldn't matter what size we are (until it starts affecting our health). I also think these kpop idols can be a little dangerous too... 48kg is not going to be a healthy weight for all females, so it would be pointless trying to achieve somebody else's body when people should just try to be the best versions of themselves. And they also go on extreme diets that are way too unhealthy and dangerous to be able to lose that much weight. As their fans, I don't think any of them would like to see us going through what they did.

No, it's because you eat more calories. The amount of food might be the same, but the energy value of a 30g snickers bar and a 30g carrot differ greatly. Sure, the natural disposition towards losing or gaining weight is different for everyone, but nobody becomes and stays obese without taking in way more calories than they should. Eating sweets and/or fried foods daily is not a normal diet, even though everyone seems to see it as such. Drinking water after soda is very important too, but I see very few people doing it. Some even drink soda instead of water. Our bodies are not made to deal with such a huge amount of sugars and salts. We feel a high dopamine reward after ingesting them because we've evolved to do so from how rarely they used to be found, we're not made to have them so often in such quantities. Take this from someone whose kidneys go crazy about filtering through excess sugars and salts - if you knew what a dramatic effect one type of food has on your body compared to a healthier alternative, you would barely ever touch restaurant food, much less fast food or most of the sweets and snacks on the market, with the exception of a few crackers, energy bars and chocolates. Even if there are people who miraculously stay skinny through all that, their internal organs and systems are going through the same thing. Can you honestly say you'd stay the same weight if you ate exclusively 2,000 calories of healthy foods with the occasional treat?

I just want to point out that a lot of Korean women are very short. ~50kg might be a healthy weight if you're short but it can be very unhealthy if you're tall(-ish). It's ridiculous to only concentrate on this one number and not consider each individual's height, muscle mass, etc. And Asian people typically have a bit more petite frame than other races so their healthy BMI is _slightly_ different from the healthy BMI for other races...

Smoking is a problem but is not exclusive to skinny people. What do people usually mean by “skinny”?? People will assume you have anorexia or bulimia (btw, bulimics aren’t skeletal like anorexics, from what I’ve read) when you’re skinnier than most, which is b.s. Many even feel the need to tease or bully you because of it. They have no inkling of what a true anorexic looks like. Basically, if you don’t fit the societal norm of what is acceptable, you’ll have to put up with jerks, whether you’re big or small. So just as you may have been called something like, let’s say, “whale” and told to eat less, I have been called “stick” and told to eat more. Pretty much the same thing on the opposite side of the spectrum. So no, skinny isn’t better, in my experience. In reality it tends to only refer to a particular range of average weight people though, not actual skinny (underweight) people. I think it’s hypocritical that people must feel good about their weight by putting others’ weight down, when we’re actually going through much of the same problems. Body positivity shouldn’t be limited to the overweight. I remember the Dove campaign with all the different shaped women. That was positive, that was inclusive, that was solidarity between women. We need more of that. For men, too.

Quork most of the skinny girls in korea are quite short. compared to western ideals, skinny girls are a lot taller. in the west, you're unhealthy if you're 6ft and weigh 45kg, but in korea if you're 5f and weigh 45kg then you're healthy.
@eliselol85
@eliselol85 6 жыл бұрын
frostiwon edits 100% agree but that is completely not what I was talking about and you know that, standardizing their 45kg in the west would lead to an epidemic of being underweight which is just as bad/ if not worse. What I am saying is if being underweight and malnourished can be demeaned and made fun of take Eugenia Cooney which most people even petitioned to stop being on youtube, why don't we do the same for morbidly obese people?? To not offend?? What a spineless world we live in. The body positivity movement which I don't agree with on any level has a lot to work on. They shouldn't work on glamoursing being under or overweight they should be promoting healthy eating and excercise to live long and be fit at your personal healthiest regardless of your weight and shape, and not trying to defy science so they can feel temporary comfort both overweight and underweight people have something in common, most are not happy within themselves when they look in the mirror. Instead of bettering themselves which is an evolutionary advantage that humans nowadays are loosing, they look for external validation. This will never happen as humans will always be the same.

BornaE Well healthy doesn't necessarly equal going to the gym 5 times a week and not having a double chin. Healthy means being at a weight that doesn't make you at risk of death/illness, these girls aren't obese they are curvy and plump and they work and move like any other human being so obviously they're not in any concerning state.

BornaE why can you not calm down. I didn't mean to offend u or anything I was just literally stating what I read in the video and that's that, but you go outta ur way to call my comment retarded. And about that, maybe if u were juuuuust a tad more sensitive and understanding you could actually convince people to understand your point of view. Because I'm sure fat girls who already have self esteem issues want to seriously listen to advice from someone who called them beluga whales :) nice going, genius. Fuck outta here with your attitude.

BornaE hmm ok so let me get this straight. U (1) assume that I 100% believe them, even tho all I did was just highlight a line that I thought might have been just a tad relevant. (2) u think that they're helping the world in some way now, so you have like, 0 reason to be angry at them. They don't get anything, you don't make a point. (3) you've given up on convincing people like me, you don't care if they listen to your advice, and you don't care who's supporting both of our opinions, leaving you with 0 reason to comment in the first place. And finally, (4), you come here and in aggression start this heated debate or whatever, and you don't expect anything; you don't expect me to agree with you, you don't expect me to say anything useful; you've chosen to believe that my comments are straight up retarded... You don't expect anything at all and yet you're still angry.... At me? You don't give a shit about me and what I think and yet you still get fucking _angry at me?_ Way to go, buddy. You get nothing. I hope you got everything out of your system and had fun at least :)

You can’t be overweight and healthy. There’s no such thing as “chubby or skinny genetics” either, how much you eat determines your weight. If you consistently overeat, you’ll gain weight and when you aren’t a healthy weight you put yourself at risk for developing diseases which can have a significant negative impact on your quality of life. It really isn’t that difficult to understand.

Dark Lightning unhealthy people know they’re unhealthy. They don’t need to be told that by other people. There’s no point in having it so they can only dress badly. Insulting a bunch of people you don’t know based off of weight is so rude and disrespectful. You never know what people do, what they’ve been through, etc. Maybe for you it isn’t attractive but I think that just shows your superficialness if you took the time to insult beautiful woman :(

Ok so these comments are all over the place. I'm overweight and right now I'm doing the best as I can do for a healthier lifestyle. I think people should go by their height, age, race, gender, and BMI's. Like some of the comments on here Asians do have a higher percentage of health problems caused by being overweight, which is the reasons Koreans are "narrow minded". They are only trying to help others to do healthy things. Now I do believe there are better ways to tell people instead of being brutally blunt. I also saw some comments about people being skinny privileged? Nothing like that exist. I have some skinny friends who actually get called out by fatter people calling them anorexic. I think that everyone should worry about themselves instead of trying to call others out for their body types. Stop being so sour!

Of course everyone should work hard to be as healthy as possible but as someone who has been in the hospital with an eating disorder, miserable, and obese and happy I know people treat you far far far better when you're skinny. Even doing simple things as using public transportation you notice people care far too much about other people's weight when they aren't thin.

This is crazy. We don't have much obese people in Poland but there was always a variety of sizes to choose from. Normally brands have size range from 34 to 44 and sometimes special sections for "plus size" that begins at 46 and go further... I think Korea denies the presence of different people than thin ones :-\

I get the idea of being healthy and all, but when under 50 kg is considered healthy there is a problem. Being healthy for me is eating regularly, vegetables, meat and others stuff and avoiding as much as possible fast food, not starving to death, or struggling to keep that under 50 kg thing with the risk of faintingor being sick. And even oversize is bad, the girls in this video were okey and they all looked stunning, but we have to stop turning a blind eye to these extremes, too skinny or too fat. Hopefully, in time Korea will open to the idea that humans, especially girls, can look beautiful, no, they are beautiful even if they are over 50. I'm proud with my size, I'm 53-54 kg and with my height(1,64) I think it's okey.

When your body type is like that it's okey, I was talking about those who tend to over do things to keep their weight under 50 and those that are eating too much for their own good. I'm trying to keep myself on the floating line, I was always too skinny when I was young, and as you, people thought I was underweight, but that's the way I was. I keep an eye on my weight because I know I tend to eat alot of fast-food as I am studying or I'm busy most of the time and I don't have time to cook for myself, but when I see I'm gaining weight, I start to not feel so good, physically speaking and tend to avoid fast food for a while. It's all about limits and a bit of attention, no one is perfect and it's hard to keep a desirable figure these days ,due to the food industry and so on, but we should try our best ^^ Each of us has a body type, some gain weight faster some don't, but each type has it's own way of keeping track of their health. I talked about extremes because with this new wave, skinny/too skinny tends to be criticised and overweight it's started to be praised. As much as I agree with embrace yourself and so on and live as you feel fit, in my opinion, this new wave is ecouraging people to eat regardless of their weight. I get the idea of this movement, that of placing at the same level the average/normal body type with the model/skinny type, but in some way it ended up encouraging the "overweight" problem. Idk, if I'm making any sense, there's a lot to talk about and there is no balck and white, there are n shade of grey, the whole situation being too complicated to be grasped in a comment, but I hope is at least a little bit understandable.

THIS IS VERY INTERESTING AND AS A PERSON WHO LOVE K-CULTURE. I highly support this campaign. I, myself is a voluptuous one and ever since I searched for body positive and #effyourbeautystandards in Instagram, I started thinking that if these people here can be proud of the body they have, why cant I? You'll see a lot of positiveness if you check on that hashtag regarding plus size women. From then on, I started to love my body. I started to embrace who and what I am. I didnt care about the opinion of others. So for these ladies and behind this campaign, my full support is with you! I hope you guys succeed to broadening the plus size culture in South Korea ❤️

TaesFanboy do you not get the point at all or not?? These people never encourage being overweight to the point of risking your health but you people have it in your head that is always the case. This campaign is against simple minded people like you who only see slim people as the standard when there are people BORN with a thicker body and made to feel less wanted and significant. For fuck sake like when are we gonna start using our common sense about these situations and be able to understand the purpose blatantly layed out for us?! 😂

TaesFanboy. Finally someone understands that you shouldn't glorify a disorder/problem. Like those Tumblr cringe videos, you always find people glorifying gender dysphoria, and other people glorifying being over weight. Sure, the girls in this video aren't too overweight, but they could lose a few pounds. I'm saying this and I myself am even trying to lose some extra weight. I think they're fine how they are now, at least they aren't obese yet. One of the models looked like that was just her build.

I have a similar problem here in NYC. I wear size 16 in jeans because I have a large butt and thighs to match, but my stomach isn't large. So Jean's and pants made in my size usually have extra fabric in the stomach area for a body part that isn't there. They made for someone who is round. Plus size doesn't always mean round. We are shaped differently. People who are very small also has this problem here where jeans are cut to fit the "ideal" body shape. You ladies are beautiful and health is always the top priority. Stay happy, healthy, and live you best life.

Kristine Well as long as you can avoid a heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gallstones, gout, sleep apnea then there shouldn’t t be a problem. If they don’t develop these things because their obese ( emphasis on obese and I meant the American definition of obese cause those freaking kpop idols are sticks) then go ahead and do whatever you want but you can’t deny the fact that obesity can cause lots of problems to your health. So while it’s great that they love their body as it is hopefully it’s not causing them problems.
