Korean archery masters demonstrate the process of aiming and releasing the arrow in Korean Traditional Archery (Kuk Kung, Gong Sul or Goong Do). For more traditional archery on KZbin check out the archery playlist at kzbin.info_play_list?p=858B6E33FEFA3925. Courtesy of www.turtlepress.com

Im korean and im not good at English. But i will tell you something about korean archery... 1. The distance between archer and target is 145m 2. There are About 30 thousand korean archers. 3. Koreans think the archery not only as the weapon for war but also as for mental training from very long time ago. 4. We use horn bow from at least B.C to now 5. Unlike other nation's horn bow,(china, mongolia...) ours are very small and very flexible. But too weak when the wheather is humid. So ancesters used bows covered with lacquer... 6. Koreans used many kinds of arrows. But now we use only two types. One is modern carbon arrows and the other one is traditional bamboo arrows. I hope i could help you.

@@crististefan6065 Before I say which poundage would be the minimum for 145 metres, You have to know my draw length and arrow weight. The former is 76 cm or about 30 inches and the latter, 370 grains. With a bow rated 35 lbs., and the above arrow, the measured poundage is 40 lbs. and will reach the target reasonably well. A shorter drawl length and a lighter arrow, still no problem. Shorter draw and the same weight arrow, you'll be just short most of the shots. Thirty pound rated bows (40 pound with my draw length) won't reach. I've done tests with bows that go all the way down to 15 lbs. just to see what distances would be acceptable for those bows. That's carbon-fibre bows. The lowest poundage hornbow I've had was about 49 lbs drawing the afore mentioned length. That's about the limit as shaving horn off the bow increases the flexibility of the limbs to a point where unstringing becomes a problem. You don't ever want an unintended unstringing of a hornbow. It's likely to result in breaking the bow.

much respect for the traditional bow and its users. i used to shoot a longbow.. fricken hard. compound bows are different and in my opinion easier to operate. i would love to start shooting with the traditional bow get back to the roots of archery :p

I recommend studying the 9 traditional precepts of Korean archery before anything else. And then go from there. 🙏

There are left handed archers and rigjt handed archers. We dont mind. And we use thumb ring just like mongolia, turkey. So the arrow rests like this vedio. And the arrow doesnt drop because of the thumb ring hand. We squeez the thumb ring hand not to drop tje arrow.

in modern korea, it is no one's concern what hand you use. But Finalshot62 had a point when he said that, because the some parts of middle east is the only place where people stick to such old doctrines without modifying to fit with the modern times.

Would I be correct in assuming his chest is more forward than other archery forms I have seen because the bow is smaller and has less draw length?
@jangtheconqueror

Jo C I think part of it is the thumb draw pulling to the ear. Pulling only to the mouth, you need the extra draw length that having your chest sideways gives you. I'm not completely sure though.

You can do it both ways, but it will be harder since the bow is a a lot shorter.

oO Wait he's wielding his bow left handed? Thought left-handedness was taboo over there and frowned upon.

I don't understand, he rests is arrow in the same side in which he shoots? In other words, he rests his arrow in the left side of the bow, and shoots with his left hand. I've tried to do this with my bow, and the arrow flew like 5-7 feet to the right side of the target, completly missing it. Do they always hit their targets like this?

Yes, a properly trained archer will consistently hit the target. I'm right handed, but will try to explain this from the perspective of a left handed archer just to keep in sync with the video. 1. The left thumb, with a thumb ring is used to draw, hold and release the arrow. 2. The arrow rests between the bent knuckle of the right thumb and the left side of the bow. As this bow is not centre cut, the archer's paradox will apply, that is, the arrow will point to the left of the target, not at it. 3. On drawing the arrow, the direction the arrow points will shift to the right. At full draw, someone standing behind the archer and looking along the arrow will see it point to the right of the target. With the target 145 metres away, the arrow will be pointing about ten metres to the right of the target 4. The archer is standing such that his chest is 45 degrees to the left of a line to the target. His head is turned to the right as far as his neck will allow him to do so. The string of the bow is to the left side of his head and is tucked in as close as is possible. 5. The bow is canted five to ten degrees so the target is visible to the archer and he is able to aim using some reference point on the bow or his right hand and some point on or around the target. The arrow is still not pointing at the target. 6. On releasing the arrow, the string will travel around the thumb ring as the latter moves forward, causing an outward path, however brief, for the string. This is quickly corrected by the forces working to bring the string forward. The direction the arrow points will be reversed from the path it took when drawing the bow. 7. All said and done. In spite of the Archer's Paradox, the positioning of the release hand to the left side of the head, and any other factors here, the arrow will travel towards and hit the target.

Last I heard it was frowned upon in South Korea since I heard EVERYONE was forced to wield it righty. Why? Going to call me ignorant because of it?

That isn't the case today. Which eye is dominant plays a role in determining which handed-ness to begin with. I noticed the instructor at our jeong (club) checking out a new member for eye dominance just the other day. We have several members who shoot left handed. Some started out that way; others have changed due to injuries caused by just too much repetitive shooting over time. The bottom line is no one cares which way, right or left, another member uses their bow. I suspect that's been the case for a long time. I've been practicing this sport for 19 years now and that certainly was the case when I started.
