it's not that bad, just tastes like microwave food. The cinnamon things (we just called them pop tarts) are nice warm in the morning when you cant eat too much and the spicier tomato based meals they do are all good when you're a bit cold late at night. Hes right though you need quite a lot of water with it all. Loads of things like kidney beans and similar proteiny stuff in it. Also we took extra ration packets which heat themselves via a chemical reaction so no eating miserable cold stuff except tuna marinara which is good cold.

I like the disclaimer at the beginning lol like "we just happened to get the bad ones" I think it's just difficult or impossible to make a ration that can last as long as the military needs, provides all the nutrients, AND taste good. You gotta give up one, and unfortunately taste is the one that's given up, for logistical reasons.

I can’t speak for other militaries - but the US has the flavor, nutrition, and shelf life down to scientific perfection. (May be because it is the US with a diverse population and our military budget is INSANE!!) I certainly had my preferences, but I remember there being like 4 different ration manufacturers with somewhere about 20 or 40 options each. I don’t remember having the same thing twice in my 3 years, but I certainly could tell from the labels if I was going to have to trade something in my pack. Although, I never did like the meals with seafood in them. Eggs were easy as I usually had a cheese spread, peanut butter, or small dessert that I could trade for a salsa so I could choke it down.

this reminds me of a friend of mine in Italy, who had a Korean guest stay over at his place for a while. in the south of italy, when you empty a plate of food it means you liked it and chances are that you will be served some more... apparently in Korea it is considered bad manners not to empty your plate if you are a guest...my friend sat there laughing at his guest getting stuffed every meal out of sheer politeness and not knowing when to say no.

Korean food rations are made more for a stationary army that constantly defends its borders and has really short supply lines. They are closer to normal food, so taste better but have other drawbacks (for example the instant ramen the Koreans have is basically junk food, tastes good but it is all carbs and sodium). US and British ones are designed for a more mobile war with, super compact and pack a lot of nutrients for their size and weight, with really long expiration dates, so expect them to look bad and taste like chemicals, but probably make more sense for battlefields where you have to carry a lot of stuff.
@박희수-t8d
@박희수-t8d 2 жыл бұрын
Korea also uses preserved food that is not cooked mainly for mobility, but in my experience, it was a long time ago than the video, but I felt a headache when I ate it.It's a rule to add hot water, but it's a good product to add lukewarm water, but it's a taste and texture that I don't want to call food If a soldier is in front of you, you want to shoot.

You confused military meal and combat ration. Regarding korean military meal, you are right. But for korean combat ration, you are wrong. The meal shown in this video is not military meal but combat ration of British army. Korean combat ration is lesser size and compact than US, British one even sufficient nutrition and same shelf life..
@johnnybaum7957
@johnnybaum7957 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like you have no idea what you are talking about lol.. Korean rations last a long time and are made for mobile war just like any other rations. Koreans constantly are at the forefront of fighting pirates in the Indian sea and have participated in wars like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghan. The fact that you said Koreans instant junk foods is funny since Americans and British eat even more junk food than the Koreans.

I think is just preference. I'm asian and I would not be able to hold down food after waking up, not a really big fan of breakfast. In china breakfast is very light, some rice soup with soy milk and some fried bread is enough. I guess Koreans like to have a heavier breakfast.

Never tried the new rations, but I had more than enough experience with the old 24 hr ration packs. It had several menu's, and was split into two types; Summer and Winter. The winter one required more water. The better one was the winter ration pack as it had chocolate and was overall better. Everyone had their favourite item and I liked the biscuits brown and biscuits fruit (which was basically a garibaldi biscuit). I never bothered with the tea and coffee. The juice flavour could strip the paint from a tank and the butterscotch dumplings was absolutely gipping. The main meals were okay, there was Kendall mint cake that existed for those who hated their teeth and there was small tins of cheese and meat paste I think it was. I just remember the tins. Also inside were some waterproof matches and toilet roll for those that desired to severely punish their rear ends- which you ended up doing anyway when you ate the ration pack...

But plz remember that ROKA army company CO said the British ARMY rations contains all good ingredients that a one soldier have to consume. And the English rations fulfills it so he thinks British rations are really good. As I am Korean I've been to army and we almost eat cooked meals not MRE so that made the soldiers to feel that meal was not good. And also we have cultural differences that also made them to feel it's different. Plz don't feel bad about our Korean army's evaluation.

I don't know about other countries, but where I'm from, I've been told that they taste far better when heated up. So I've been on a good number of outfield training deployments and I've made it a point to make my platoon gather up to eat the rations heated up in mess tins filled with water. My voluntary sacrifice each deployment was just 2 sets of mess tins which get their bottoms burnt black from all the solid fuel heating. Most of my guys were simply too lazy to heat it up on their own and always thought the rations tasted bad, but after heating them up properly, they changed their minds. An unexpected effect was the fostering of camaraderie at the meal site, which the guys actually look forward to each day. And such an effect has a nice habit of spreading to neighbouring units. Of course there are certain menus everybody hates, and in my case, it was always the spicy curry rice/noodle type packets. Tons of boxes of those get returned to base in pristine condition because it never leaves the store vehicle. Dessert packets were always highly sought after.
@Naeron66

They do taste better, I was in the Army back in the days of tinned rations and if you had time to cook things it was far better. The breakfast spam-like meat was nice if you had time to fry it in a mess tin for example.

Great video! As a US Air Force retiree that started on C-Rations from the VIetNam era, and finished with MREs, these meals don't look too bad. I'm surprised there is no rice with a lot of these menu choices. The Korean meals in the previous video looked excellent, but I could see how it could get boring over a prolonged deployment. US meals have come a long way, but military food is made for nutrition first, taste second, so you just have to eat it and be happy. :)
