Hey guys! have you been enjoying the netflix show? I've been GLUED... please remember this is just one's personal opinons and I'd love to Openly discuss these topics, no attacking and hating please! I know it's SUPER weird to hear Koreans describing one's physical appearance from double or no eyelids, nose shapes, etc, but it's just something that's common in Korea. Yes, its different culture than others@

Racism and colorism are two different things, first of all. Also, at its root, the word 'discrimination' only means to treat people differently. You can discriminate without having bad intentions. Sometimes people discriminate without even realizing it. Saying that Korea has a colorism problem isn't an unfair comment, I think. Just look at the advertizing for products, the very small range of foundation shades, etc. Also, there's a literal slur for people who have darker skin. Like... come on y'all. You know what's going on. All I'm saying is Yoon Mi-rae didn't write Black Happiness for no reason...

Some people view and evaluate other countries from their own point of view. There is little respect for other cultures. In Korea, white skin has been traditionally preferred for a long time. Some people say that Korea prefers Western white skin is a very misguided view. Most Koreans are not interested in the white skin of Westerners and do not follow Westerners. In any country, certain people follow other countries. Likes. You shouldn't generalize with it.

I don't like biased articles or any negative videos. I don't like generalizations. I hope that people will respect the traditions and cultures of other countries. There is a record that Korea has preferred white skin from ancient history. This is a long tradition in Korea.

My problem with colorism conversations in any race is how easily people try to dismiss it under the guise of culture or it being a cultural thing. So many harmful things can be validated or explained away by culture but it still doesn't make it right and actually starting a conversation about harmful ideas and wording is where you correct it. That being said, I love the show and Soyeon is BBBBBAAEEEEE 😍 I instantly gravitated to her because of her mature, womanly energy. Yea Won was my second favorite because of her quick wit, humor and smoking body.

@@danicabrice4205 I mean, I see tonnes of comments saying that Korea just culturally has a preference for lighter skin and that's something historical but if that comes at the expense of people with tanner skin where they have an actual societal disadvantage and they are somewhat excluded from exhaulted beauty standards then that is a feature of colorism. By this logic tanner skinned people will most times come second in any opportunity rather it be occupation, (especially if it relies on "beauty"), dating and marriage, etc. And let's not pretend that their aren't a lot of Koreans born with tanned skin who have experienced this, which is why they may feel more pressure to alter their skin tone. Its binary thinking to try to use one thing to explain this phenomenon instead of looking at the different factors involved.

Racism isn't the same as colourism. So, saying that Korea is known for colourism isn't inaccurate. Colourism is LITERALLY prioritising light skin over darker skin in racial groups. I actually stopped watching because Soyeon was just getting ignored and i don't think thats a coincidence when you consider her skin. It really annoyed me because she's gorgeous. America IS incredibly racist, you're right. But openly preferring light skin in one race is the definition of colourism and thats done very openly in korean media. It's not a uniquely korean problem. Love Island has a similar issue with it's casting. So watching this, i felt the same as Love Island like oh, once again the darkest skinned girl is treated the worst.

I just wanted to say that "Singles Inferno" was a breath of fresh air for me! I'm from the U.S, and I mostly consume reality love shows from the U.S. They mostly contain so much fights between the contestants (physically too), sex, partying a lot and being drunk half of the time. Singles Inferno is so different to me because with out all of those traits that typical American Love shows have, I'm not here to see "Oh! They fighting, Oh my god this crazy!", But I'm actually here to watch the romance blossom and see the chemistry develop.

There is a difference between Racism and colourism. What the guy did is colourism and discrimination. I grew up in Congo and Nigeria and there is colourism in Congo especially, i even experienced it in my family, it was not racism it was colourism. Lets call it for what it was white = pure is colourism. Just because its embedded in their culture does not mean its not colourism. Where lighter skin is seen as beautiful and pure and dark skin wild and ugly. To be honest most countries and cultures have colourism issues. I think you need to learn the difference between racism and colourism as they are not the same. As usual some people become so defensive when challenged about colourism. Thanks for the video i think these conversations needs to be had. There are so many dark skin people discriminated in work places, social environments or even TV because they seem "ugly" in certain countries. Instead of finding excuses for such mentality, we need to discuss and rebuke. I've experienced colourism in Africa where I'm from and racism in the UK where i currently reside, there is a huge difference. Thank you 🥰

Colorism within a group of people is discrimination. Colorism and racism also has a thin line because if you say all pale skin people are superior or prettier then that becomes racist. They are literally describing light skin people as "pure"...then can't a tan skin be pure? Also recently jin taek is getting attention because he uses black skin emojis when in fact he is tan skin. This is not , imo, racist but an example of colorism and how someone who is tan is perceived or see themselves as darker than they are.

Koreans can’t have a it all. They can’t be desperate to have respect and acknowledgment from international people and also want us to respect their negative flaws in their country. With the popularity arising in SK internationally, they are getting more and more visitors from different countries and some end up staying and living there. I think despite them being a monogamous country they don’t have the right to be racist and colourist. YES they don’t know what colourism is and colourism is a big issue in multiple countries however it doesn’t justify the reason for them to not educate themselves on this issue. The same way China got exposed for being racist to black people, SK will go through the same thing it’s just matter of time. They need to educate THEMSELVES and the issues that they have within their country thats the only possible way they can make change. It’s changing slowly but it’s like not talked enough. They not only discriminate foreigners ( a Caucasian will get more admiration, than a black person or a person hailing from south Asia, South East Asia), I am amazed that u r aren't mentioning the fact that korean are obsessed with white skin and all sort lightening /brightening product. It might be due to less exposure of the community than one residing in other parts of the world's. But, I have noticed a trend in reality shows in South Korea, yes even in 2021 ( 2022) ppl outrightly call u black (even when the person is dusky), they ridicule u for your skin colour, and applaud a person with white skin. In fact if u search up the definition of colourism it’s actually more typical among ppl of the same racial group so koreans can be colourist to other koreans. There is an issue w colourism in asian countries. I would say the colourism in korea came from classism. Yes, the person in the show may have just been complimenting her skin tone and not insinuating he thinks darker skin is ugly BUT colourism is absolutely a thing in korea (as well as many other countries). Equating lighter skin w pretty, pure, clean, innocent ppl and darker skin w ugly, dirty, dangerous, poor ppl is a problem that needs to be discussed in order for change to start happening. thx

I totally agree with you that there are different beauty standards across the world. I grew up in Indonesia (not in the capital city but another city) when I was young and being chubby was seen as being healthy, happy and wealthy (coz you have more money to eat ROFL) while being skinny was seen as being sick, impoverished (to the point that you don't have money to eat), and depressed. So people in my hometown said "you gained weight" as a form of compliment and they say it often to each other. The sad thing is that I was very skinny when I was young and no matter how much I ate, I couldn't gain weight (I hope that I still have that ability now... sigh). So people around me kept on telling me to gain weight when I was a kid.

unsure if we live in the same place... i'm a relatively big girl because my dad is big and tall. and i see people side-eyeing how i look especially my thighs ALL THE TIME, assumed that i always eat the most out of everyone, and even told me passive aggressively "makmur ya" or "if only you're skinny..." 🤨 however none of them are really brave enough to tell me to lose weight (except some family members), they just treat me like i'm the pig in the group or straight up ignore me and talk about how they "have to be drunk first to consider me ideal" (yup, that happened) behind my back. in conclusion, it's hard to live in this country because everyone always glamorize skinny people, but then they tell naturally skinny people to gain weight. living as a woman is hard.

I live in Indonesia too, but i guess different region has its own beauty standard, because here in Jakarta being pale and skinny means you born with silver spoon. Pale skin to be said that you always got the "roof" protecting you (big house with lotsa AC, always go out with car, lotsa skin care, etc) being skinny means you can afford all those fancy excercises such as yoga, pilates, muaythai, etc. And of course, with all those stereotype most women here wants to eat a lot without getting fat, going out with 'grab car', so they can look rich.

I feel like Yea-won and So-yeon are the ultimate platonic OTP in this show. The both of them have very little screentime as well, which is unfortunate. Also, even though Ji-a is considerably overrated, she exudes that overwhelming confidence and alluring beauty that I know quite a handful of guys in the show chase after. Ji-yeon is the innocent yet humble girl archetype. Min-ji and Su-min deserved better. I get that they're the new girls and all, but I guess they weren't given many chances. I'm somehow glad that Se-hoon was given the opportunity to head over to Paradise with Ji-yeon since he had been getting a bit miserable day by day in Inferno. As for the other dudes a.k.a. Si-hun, Hyeon-joong, Hyun-seung, Jin-taek, etc. I mean, they're all...okay. Si-hun does kinda resemble Lee Jong-suk for some reason hahaha. @@emilyrosebery1848 I'm not saying she's dishonest. I'm saying that although she lives up to the Korean beauty standard of being a delicate, innocent-looking flower (look-wise and she doesn't savagely call out guys like Soyeon) - she's not as innocent you might think she is. She knows what she wants and takes steps to get it. When she doesn't want Sehoon, she knows all the signals to send off. When she's motivated to go to paradise, she goes all-out fighting for the cap against a girl more physically imposing than her. If she were that innocent, she wouldn't be successfully living abroad as an international student at the University of Toronto. All of these instances display her true survival skill and her innocent look is just that - a look. Plenty of people on the show and viewers alike fall for that. Maybe you don't know enough of these types of Asian women, but it's a classic archetype. That's how men, even men in the Western world, have come to believe that Asian women are the submissive type and they want that but, in fact, we all know after marriage there are such things as tiger mom's that run the household. All of the women, except Jia, were very honest - even to the point of being blunt and hurting guy's egos. Jia wasn't outright dishonest, but she sure was leading guys by the nose. I see plenty of comments applauding her for that, but I don't. It's dangerous for any man to get emotionally involved with her, regardless of whether you get to be with her or not. Also, no one is saying you can't have a 'type' romantically. But 'preferences' are often actually just racism in disguise. Lots of cultures encourage you to avoid darker skinned people romantically/ that lighter skin is more attractive (which, surprise surprise- is racist). I don't know how you can have a preference of 'i just prefer light skin' and not see that also equals 'on the basis of this person being brown they are unattractive'. Replace unattractive with say, 'stupid'. Easy to see that would be racist. People aren't made to question enough what parts of society have ingrained racism in them, and i mean to many racial groups. Hmm, this sounds like this whole bs "preference" thing that's going around. It's one thing to say you're attracted to a certain skin color, but when you start to demean the skin tone that you *don't* like, I think it's a problem. Why is one skin tone seen as "pure?" Skin is skin, so why is white skin always pure, which seems to sound like "perfect." Darker skin never gets called "pure." This always keeps getting excused, but it seems hypocritical when EVERYONE wants to call it out in the west, but then excuse it in various countries. And make no mistake, I know all too well how bad the west is with racism and this is not a cape for them at all. *Colorism ≠ Racism* They're rooted in the same disgusting social constructs, but they aren't the same. Colorism focuses more on skin tone preference in one specific race, not about racial discrimination in general. For example, saying you prefer lighter skin black people over darker skin black people, saying you prefer pale white people over tanner white people, saying you like pale Asians (this includes all Asians for any ignorant people who think I'm ignoring any non-East Asian) over tanner Asians. Vice versa as well (because people can be shunned for being too pale as well). That's colorism, but you keep on talking about racism. Regardless of the classist history of South Korea (associating pale with wealth and tan with poor), that itself is still colorism even if it's just something between Koreans because it's basically looking down on one skin tone over the other for whatever aged dumb reason, so the comment isn't exactly wrong. But I do get what you're saying! 😊 South Korea, despite all the hype it's been getting, is still a very homogeneous country. That leads to a lot of cultural differences between the culture there and others that are more diverse. It isn't necessarily an excuse to say hurtful things (not necessarily referring to this clip because we've already established the colorism in South Korea, and there's also the possibility of it being mistranslated), especially in this big big day and age of social media and technology, but it does explain some miscommunications and misconceptions. Edit: Lemme add, for those who seem a lil confused, that for my explanation of what colorism is, I mean preferring a skin tone over another for dumb reasons. Like you find one "unhealthy/dirty" or "ugly." Stuff like that.

I know Koreans especially older generations associate certain physical features to 'sucess' in life, bc that's how they grew up. Most older generations grew up in poverty due to South Korea being a new country after the war. It's only been 60 yrs since the war, the mindset isn't going away anytime soon

Every time with take two steps forward with shifting the standard of beauty, someone would take two steps backwards to undo all of the work it took to change the mindset. Either way I find some beauty standards grossly unattainable, not unless you do surgery from head to toe to attain that set look and think about how mentally harmful it is for those whom don't fit the standard.

The show was fun to watch but frankly very problematic from my perspective on various things and not just the colourism aspect. I saw extremely shallow comments ("I chose him because I like nice noses" ???), very stereotypical and misogynistic attitudes, and for me Sehoon's behavior towards Jiyeon was close to harassment. I was very angry with the commentators who praised him. I loved Soyeon and Yaewon and thought they deserved better than any man on the island ...

Soyeon was my #1 girl since episode 1! She's bold, honest, confident, and SO GORGEOUS. I also love Yeawon and I'm so disappointed she didn't get more screentime. The show spent too much time milking the one-sided love story of Sehoon, and I did not lik his desperation, and it clearly made Jiyeon uncomfortable. I would have refused to go to Paradise with him if I was her... how can you be so fixated on a girl because you find her pretty?

I think that enough people have pointed out the colourism implicit in the show and within many cultures including Korea. I would also like to point out that with the growing global attention that Korea is experiencing will also come growing International scrutiny. Perhaps what will become necessary is for creators of content for global consumption to be mindful of what they are putting out there.

I feel like you would be more familiar with the problem because you have been living in america. The problem with colorism even if it is only within a particular ethnicity is that it judges people on a trait that doesn't change/you can't help. I know koreans even within my own family who are naturally darker skinned than I am, and tan much easier than me. The amount of work in the sun is not the factor. And the fact that the stereotype was rooted in a history of differences in wealth (if that is true) doesn't excuse judging people on skin color then or now. I'm not sure if rich people back then wore whitening makeup - but it seems like if they did, it would be an example of exposing the stereotype as untrue. Also, the issue with saying that someone's skin is so white and pure and whether that implies that darker skin is not is because of the representation and power in that society. Just saying "your skin is so white and pure I like it" does not logically exclude "that other woman's skin is so dark and pure I like it," but because of the larger representation in power structures, the argument is that it can imply it. While talking about your own ideal type is harmless on its face, if one analyzes their ideal type they will find that it could very well be rooted in racist ideas influenced by the wider culture. The same way that there's a window where experiences will affect your adult sexual preferences and kinks, I think it makes sense to say that some of those preferences could have been influenced by indoctrination or just outdated ideas that a skin color/ethnicity by itself means certain desirable traits like wealth, purity, good, etc. Having sexual preferences may not hurt anyone else per se, but to say that they can't be affected at all by racist things doesn't seem reasonable. as far as korea being a more racist country than say the US, I won't speak definitively to that because I have not lived in korea recently, but i do think it makes sense that a country that is mostly homogenous would be more racist - think about other ethnicities in a stereotypical way and treat them as only these stereotypes, not as individual human beings. Like you said, there are racists in every country, but the way the people act might make the country seem more racist. I don't know what kind of racism you experienced in the US, but I have been teased as a kid because of my eyes, which look like asian eyes, which is something I was born with. However, I don't think I have been treated as less than a human being because of that. There's a lot of awareness, I think, BUT I think there are people out there who would disagree with me. But, I think I have been treated as less than a human being because I am overweight, though :).

I 100% agree! I grew up in America as the daughter of African immigrants and even when I was young, I was taught to fear getting darker. It exists everyone and it astonished me why we wouldn’t acknowledge why it’s harmful just because it’s been there for so long. As for whether Korea is more or less racist, I studied abroad there for a semester last fal and honestly, even though I spent a short time there it was an incredible but emotionally exhausting experience. I think the fact that recent subjects in America include micro aggressions while discrimination on the basis of race is still technically legal says a lot. I loved Korea with my whole heart, but I’ve never experienced that level of exclusion in my entire life 😅. And I agree, I do think homogenous countries would reasonably have this issue. Living in a multicultural society, how could I look at my friends with darker complexions and justify my caring for them when I was also afraid of looking like them by getting “darker”? And likewise how could my friends of lighter complexion look at me and say we were friends when they were terrified of having my skin complexion? I just think it’s easier to encounter these realizations when you’re faced with it more frequently like in multicultural societies. I also liked how you described the idea of how people from homogenous countries might see foreigners as their respective stereotypes and not as individual people because that was exactly how it felt in Korea. It didn’t feel like most Koreans saw me as a person, more like an oddity. Again, really liked your take on this!

In my opinion, I don't think it considers colorism. People have different ideal types of a girl or a guy. This is ridiculous that people take everything personally these days. It's not wrong for someone to say that their ideal type is innocent, pale, skinny, etc. Remember that you can't force someone to change their ideal type of beauty standards. Let them have the freedom to have their own opinion. PERIOD. Edit: I’m Korean American, but I prefer Korean beauty standards than American beauty standards. There are things I don’t understand about American beauty standards such as big butts, tan skin, heavy makeup, etc. At the same time, I accept their beauty standards instead of changing their mind about what considers beauty. At the end of the day, it’s better to accept other countries beauty standards instead of calling out ppl and say that’s “racist”. Also, there is NO definition of beauty. It’s your choice about what considers beauty. Beauty changes every year. So pick a beauty standards that fits for you. Don’t follow others just because it’s a trend. Trend dies down easily. Please respect everyones beauty standards. Thank you.

10:17 Ji-a said in her previous videos before going on the show that she actually doesn’t have that many friends or guy friends and if you notice it’s always her mom who records her videos. When she’s vloging she’s either alone or with her mom and dad, even in her graduation vlog she had lunch with her mom in the university campus. She received hate for actually being a lonely person, which is so stupid, her bond reminds me of me and my mom and I think it’s so sweet they’re so close. Family means a lot to her. If you think about the being lonely thing it actually makes sense, a lot of people probably get close to her just to take advantage of her since she looks wealthy or to try to date her and then dip

It's interesting to see how cultures in other parts of the world will evolve with the globalization of kdramas, kpop, and kshows. I watched a lot of Korean entertainment content before it became popular. I'm from a conservative culture, hence a dating show like this resonated with me the most. But American dating shows always left me feeling worse than how I felt before watching the show. There's too much fighting(sometimes physical), drinking, rudeness, hookups, etc. so I stopped watching them.

So I watched the show after your video and can finally give my opinion !!! To be honest, thoses types of comments about skin color always makes me really unconfortable. But as someone who listen to lots of kpop and stuff, I do get that it's more of a cultural thing. I mean, for koreans, I suppose it isn't a really big deal, it's probably the same as saying "I love blue eyes". Of course I don't think it's a good thing, but maybe things will change with time ? We'll see For the show, well, purely physically speaking, I also got caught by Ji-a. I actually already vaguely knew her from youtube, but didn't knew she would be there and didn't instantly recognise her! I don't know, she has that special aura, and she kinds of makes me think of Jennie Kim from Blackpink? I don't know if the others agree with me but I feel like they have the same vibe if you get it She's literally so beautiful I understand why she was so popular on the show I also really liked Yeawon. Physically she was really hot let's be honest, but she also seemed to have a fun personality. I'm really sad we didn't get to see that much of her. For the guys, I think my favorite was Si-hun. Seriously he is so cute, I still can't get over the fact that he is 30, I thought he was 25 or something. Among all the guys he was in my opinion the most beautiful I'm sad he ended up going for Ji-a even tho he knew he would lose, I was hoping he would find hapiness with Sun Min. By the way I feel really sad for Min Ji. She's the only one who never got the chance to go to paradise and ended up alone... I agree about Oh Jin, he was one of my favs at the beginning of the show, but after what he did to Soyeon it was a big no for me You don't promise someone to stay with them if the day after you hesitate... I can only guess that the association of tanned to fit and sexy is from the image of a beach goer (wearing bikini, abs exposed and getting tanned). I also just remembered, there was a time when 2pm and snsd did that thing. It was quite sexy, there were abs, lifeguards and yuri was even putting on tanning lotion, so looking into media and how they portray tanned skin may also shed light to why tanned is associated to sexy and fit.

I don't believe what people say on the internet. I like data and accurate information. I once read a book about Korea that said that the traditional image of a woman in Korea was white jade skin. That said, not all Koreans prefer white skin. To say that Koreans follow Westerners is really misinformation and a Western-oriented way of thinking.

jiyeon or yeawon would be the ones id go for. but honestly international viewers( im american so im just speaking about them) dont branch out to see how other countries do things or say things. its pretty much my way or youre completely wrong and you need to change to how i think (instead of being open minded to seeing other POVs) which this is how most americans think about everything. we like thinking everything needs to be catered to us. we like saying "oh everyone and other countries are different" but that applies to when the person agrees with it, but when its something they dont like they attack or shame the person/country for being "different" from what they think. we are very hypocritical people but when they get called out on it or someone tries to explain it so they can understand they'll gaslight them or keep saying how they think and not even try to understand what others think or do and it becomes a never ending cycle of repeating. I wish we would become more sophisticated and open minded, but we are still in that 1 way thinking and getting worse. We also hate so fast so we are even more closed minded, that every time i look at the comments i feel so bad.. Kinda wish everyone in general would realize theres other countries and people who have different beauty standards, ideal types, and way of thinking so be open minded

You' were spot on with your perception on the cast members characters. I also perceived them exactly as you described them. But I don't agree with color subject, neither do I think it's the same as being skinny or not. Skin color is something you're born with and will die with. Skinny people can gain weight and fat people can lose as well. Skin color is a way deeper subject.
