Because males are higher on the hierarchy, females will get bullied and criticized by them if the females are in their age group or younger. Of course, age is also part of the hierarchy so parents and older people will criticize and henpeck and order around their sons and younger people. In-laws, especially mother-in-laws to married women (daughter-in-law is low on the totem pole) feel entitled to boss around daughters in law. You've probably seen rhis trope on Korean TV dramas - it's not all fiction. And at work, anyone in a senior position can relentlessly order around and criticize staff who are junior to them.

As a Korean male, I do hear some ridiculous things guys around me do look for… height, weight, hair length, (even heard a guy mention calves and elbows, like they need to be nice) they set a strict standard to look for. i had to clown on them(the guys) telling them ‘you aint no idol/actor urself. I guess I’m a bit of a bully too for doing that, but I can’t stand people who put others down to feel better about themselves. Obviously not all of it is extreme, but if u read real stories of it and look up cases and such, it can be very cruel. Personally, I find it more violent than bullying I heard of in US. Like, some of it can’t even be called just bullying, it’s straight up torture. Of course, I’m speaking of extreme cases here. However, bullying isn’t uncommon. That’s why k-citizens take bullying scandals of celebrities very seriously.

As a Korean-american myself, I relate to this! I don't get along with native Korean speakers for many reasons. They're very impatient with me on my Korean fluently level, so they don't really associate with me, and I'm not "cool" in their eyes. I also don't live by their standards and culture because I was mostly raised in the States. I also stopped going to Korean churches because of how they love to shame everyone on their flaws and sins. I think it’s not only a thing in South Korea. I, for instance, grew up in Mexico and you get bullied a lot as well for your appearance (mainly weight, height and skin color) but they always try to laugh it off or go “don’t take it seriously, it's a joke”, but still, they say mean things. So they not only bully you and make you feel insecure about something you didn’t even consider before, but they end up gaslighting you if you feel offended by what they said and now they feel offended because you can’t take their “jokes” about your appearance.🙄

i used to have a Korean friend, she was a new student and i know what it's like being new in a country who doesn't speak your first language, so i befriended her, she was really timid and nice. we used to hangout at my place, then one time she said her parents invited me at their place. but after meeting her parents, a week later, she treats me differently.. bc she's suddenly not allowed to be friends with me, turns out her parents said im someone who will be a bad influence bc i have big bones, eats a lot and is on the chubbier side. 🙃
