Unpopular opinion, but I think it’s ridiculous. Having served in the Army myself, we need to get rid of this mindset of, “if I suffered and wasted 2 years in the army, then so should you”. I get that the peninsula is under an armistice, but why isn’t military service a voluntary option yet? Why is it only men that are conscripted? I think the morale of the force would be higher if it was VOLUNTARY and the compensation was HIGHER. But that’s my opinion and I know it’s not popular.
@famousamos4 жыл бұрын
Modern warfare isn’t a body count issue, where you send lines of troops against each other. Rather, it is more of an artillery (field + air defense), drone, and cyber environment which doesn’t make sense to have more physical bodies in the front line. BTW, Korea has the 12th largest economy in the world, they can at least give their forced Soldiers minimum wage!

I think bts should be exempted because korean government is itself aware about the fact that because of bts only kpop has gained such wild recognition, not only k pop but korean culture also. Like earlier we all had no idea about what South Korea was. We were a little bit aware about it because of disputes with North Korea. So now people all around the world are very interested in k pop, k beauty, k drama etc. People want to come visit South Korea, students want to study in South Korea . I think the government should reconsider their decision because bts is literally bringing billion of dollars and popularity to south korea. 2 years of serving in army literally means that no songs from there side and maybe if there are exempted then their popularity can raise far more in 2 years🤔🤔

Everyone just sees the "rich and famous" as if they didn't work hard for years ,in a way none of the men in the video did...and they still do work incredibly hard. There is a reason why many idols do incredibly well in the military...unlike the bed warmers in mommy's house, they are used to ridiculous schedules, barely any sleep and huge physical and mental strain. I personally served the 21 months in the military as infantry. The whole point of the military service is just that; to serve the country. This comes in many forms; combat, R&D, data analysis, tactics and much more. Military Exception is given to those who can serve or have served in a way that brings honor and a great level of service to the country which is why athletes on the world class level and exceptionally brilliant minds are given exception. Similarly, BTS, in a way, have served and honored the country in ways no one in the entire 5000 year history of Korea has ever done . In this extremely rare case, I think they have earned to be except. Conscription in S.K. is one of the, if not the most, undesirable yet inevitable thing. The issue is with armys all over the world; they just aren’t ready to let go, and they never will be. BTS is very personal to many people, and possible loss and disbandment is one of their biggest fears. Exemption would mean that there wouldn’t be a risk of seperation for a very long time. Here’s the thing. I don’t think BTS wanting to be exempted is the issue here. It’s clear that they said they will partake in it and they never said they want to be exempted. The issue was probably brought up again because if you see it in the business perspective, it’s complicated. They’re at the top right now, they contribute so much earnings for the Korean government, and is a big impact in Korean tourism. If they got enlisted and have a break, their hype will undeniably goes down and affects the market. With that being said, exempted or not, they will still go to the military. Usually being out of the spotlight for awhile makes your hype drop. Some bands that were popular just a couple years ago, are completely unheard of now. Just because a certain fan base won’t forget them, doesn’t mean most people won’t. Military service is a several year process. Things change over the span of two years. This is a bit misleading, the Government is looking into an extension not an exemption. The rules put into place were prior to the existence of K Pop. The new rules would also apply to all male K pop artists who make a huge cultural, social, economic and world wide impact for Korea. I think for news articles and news outlets to fail to make the distinction between exempt and extend is truly bad journalism and unfair reporting. The members of BTS have no desire to run away from their military obligations and want to serve. Please report the facts fairly.
@yikes65324 жыл бұрын
But they would have to create a clear criteria for what constitutes major impacts made by kpop artists that would allow them to be exempt from military service. If they are going to change the rules to allow exemptions/extensions for kpop artists, they need to make it clear. Which, like the men in the video said, could be difficult to make criteria for. Groups like NCT, GOT7, Monsta X, and Stray Kidz (groups that have not served any military time) can all be considered groups that helped globalize Korea yet none of them are as nearly big as BTS. Would the change apply to theses groups as well? Or, is it only for groups that beat/create records like the Beatles did in the 60"s?
@michelecfeehan4 жыл бұрын
@@yikes6532 Great questions! Yes, clear criteria is what they are currently debating. The misconception is that this is being based on Awards and music records being broken, that actually is only a part of what is generating these talks in Parliament. Bts generates 3.6 billion dollars to the South Korean GPA each year, the 10 year predicted economic impact is $49.8 billion. That generates to the creation of jobs, creation of small businesses for citizens of South Korea. Increase of Tourism 796.00 visitors visit South Korea annually through BTS's promotions which is 1.7% or 1 in every 13 visitors, generating and promoting cultural exchange. " Where BTS had a compelling impact According to the latest report, BTS has an effect on the following consumer goods: Clothing = $2.026 billion, Cosmetics = $2.8 billion, and food = $3.96 billion.These are considered important exports of South Korea." Other areas include, Increase of South Korea’s BOP (balance of payments which is the total economic transactions between a country and the world) Thanks to BTS, the investment stocks of the entertainment companies improved and they are focusing on the American and European markets., The Growth of Korean Hallyu Wave. BTS lead a 22% increase of Korean Hallyu fans worldwide in 2018 (Korean Hallyu means the increase in popularity of Korean music, films, TV shows and language). Over 1 thousand worldwide charity campaigns impacting have been generated by BTS , and their fans. These campaigns are global impacting millions of people. Their UNICEF campaign. BTS Connect a global public art project involving 22 artists across five cities: London, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Seoul and New York. Quote, "according to the "Connect, BTS" website, the project has been developed by international curators who "resonated with BTS' philosophy" -- and a statement suggests the project is about connecting people in a world where people often feel isolated and "alone with their devices." all with free admittance making it possible for many people to enjoy or be introduced to art. So these are a few of the many reasons they are debating the extension, it simply has so much more to it than just winning a BBMA, or getting number 1 on the billboard chart, or beating records. It has everything to do with the impact to the Nation and it's people. Again, thanks for your thoughtful question!!

I am curious to see, that if they will be changing rules for military exemptions/extensions, how much of the criteria will be based on the effect BTS has had on their country. This definitely opens up a wide array of conversations the South Korean government will have to discuss as kpop and Korean culture become more globalized.

that is a logical statement but i think i disagree. you can put that on paper and have it make sense, but bts have impacted the spread of korean culture in a way that is on par or even higher than an athlete. sure, athletes go out into the world representing their country, but do athletes make people want to learn korean, visit korea and inspire international interest in korean culture in general? id say that very few do so, but millions upon millions of bts fans learn so much about korean culture and korean society through bts. that is invaluable impact, so id say that you can’t evaluate their impact based on just the fact that they are a private entity. speaking as someone who has learned so much about SK over the years through bts, you cannot compare an athlete to bts. they bring a very different kind of pride and prestige. but yes i agree that it would fair of them to enlist. i have no opinion regarding that as i am not korean but i think it would be fair, but in my opinion, if you are exempting athletes because of them winning gold medals and bringing prestige to the country, that same logic can be applied to bts. (very controversial take and i know i sound arrogant but if a korean man is fine with athletes getting exempted but not bts, id say it’s a bit unfortunate. i hope bts can get laurels from their country people for how much hard work they’ve put in to get to this point, and how much they’ve spread their culture to the world - whether bts enlist or not is not my problem, it’s just the principle of the matter) edit: oh i almost forgot but i have to say i do agree that bts are not just bts the artist, but their work involves the blood and sweat of other hardworking people as well. and that it’s ambiguous to exempt just the artist that carries the face of the “completed work” - it made me think. it’s more complex than that but again, on paper it makes complete sense

@@doraaaa0613 I served in the Korean military for 2 years and was discharged from the military service. To be honest, Koreans don't like BTS getting exemptions, and so do female fans. Many celebrities in Korea have been criticized for not going to the military, and the military is a very sensitive topic for Koreans, with celebrities who have been excluded from the military in an expedient way having difficulty even working in the entertainment industry. This is an example of singer Psy. Psy received many benefits that ordinary people did not receive as an entertainer, which was revealed after Psy was discharged from the military. Psy received a lot of criticism and was eventually forced to rejoin the army. I think the period of two years is very big, and people in Korea are going to the army at the expense of it. If BTS members do not join the military, it will cause a huge social impact, and other boy idol groups will argue about the standards for exemption from the military exemption. South Korea's defense minister said BTS members will join the military and there is no exception.

The whole reason bts possibly getting a military exemption is because the Korean government is looking in to it, not some random people on the internet. The whole going to military is seen as serving the country and the people that get exempted are exempted because the government believes they served the country in another way e.g. the world cup soccer team. They also know that with all the money bts brought to the economy halting their progress suddenly will also affect the sk economy in a negative way (not a flopping negative way tho, just that the amount of money being brought in by bts will drop a lot). And like the first reply said some of these men aren't even educated on why the topic bts and exemption is a thing or else they would not have made some false statements. Those men are just as biased against the idea of bts getting exempted just like some people are biased with the idea of them getting a example.

It’s a topic of discussion because they, alone, have brought $5 billion (with a b) into the South Korean economy. That’s not how much they have earned themselves, that’s how much money they have brought into the country that is now recirculating in the economy. It is in South Korea’s economic interest for BTS to not take a hiatus while they are at the top of their popularity. However, mandatory military service and exemptions are sensitive issues amongst the population. If this wasn’t so, the government would have had them exempt already because of the economic benefit. It’s the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism who wants them (as well as eSports competitors) to be exempt.

But, even if does, my point is this is not going to become a regular occurrence. It’s not like S. Korea would be in danger of suddenly having to hand out exemptions left and right. If the law already allows exemptions for people who bring certain benefits to S Korea, I don’t see how anyone can argue that BTS shouldn’t qualify.

I hate that everyone keeps bringing this topic up, because BTS have made it plenty clear that they are not seeking an exemption, but since ppl are allowing their opinions to be recorded.... the guys who are basically saying that the economic contribution should not be in the discussion, it should only be “I had to do it, so u should have to do it” are displaying some serious short sightedness. I do agree that an exemption should not be based solely on economic gains, because it opens the door for conglomerate families to argue for their sons, but BTS’ gain comes from branding themselves, & should not be overlooked. It’s not a fortune inherited or passed, it a fortune the created & earned. By being able to brand themselves in such a global way, they promote S.Korea in a larger capacity than any classically trained musician or athlete has done. By having that economic impact, they have already contributed more to the economy than 100 exempt students will in their lifetimes. So, should BTS be exempt? No, because they are not asking for an exemption. Should exemption rules be rethought? Yes, because there is obviously a hodgepodge of guidelines that cause more chaos than clarity.

It is such a complex issue. I totally understand the statements in this interview talking about how BTS ultimately is a product of a business and where does that line actually get drawn? Is there a certain dollar amount? Is it a certain award? If this exemption happens here, why then not over there? I liked hearing this perspective from people who aren't in the fandom, because it is a logical argument that shows the complexity of the issue, and the lack of clarity from the government. It seems the bigger issue is the mandatory service itself, and towards the end of this clip that started to be addressed. How long does South Korea keep this up? How long does this country send all it's young men into service when many of them are contributing to society in their own significant ways? All of this is a good conversation to have, and the talk of BTS exemption is a great leaping off point to have that discussion.
@lins_z24 жыл бұрын
About the argument that one guy said that if athletes, artists and musicians have exemptions because of their great contributions, then so should other areas like businessmen, I think that it’s debatable. Age is not really a huge matter for others areas like education, business, science, etc., while it is a huge deal for athletes and in this case, kpop artists. Their physical strength and stamina decreases greatly overtime. At some point, it’ll be harder for them to do intense trainings like they do when young. Kpop artists are also more popular when young, compared to when they’re in their 30s and older, so for them their 20s are even more important. While as a regular person, you’ll of course feel like your youth is wasted, you still can do professionally all the things that you can in those years spent in the military. So in my opinion, that’s not really a great argument against it. But again, even when people have this conversation, at the end it is BTS’s decision if they would take an exemption even when given the opportunity.
@cassandraanilom70744 жыл бұрын
This exemption thingy is hard for bts. Cuz of their career. If they will given an opportunity to be exempted. They will accept it becuz of the goverment,fans and their company. But if they will not accept it. the reasons i think are the pressure from the reactions of non-armys most of the kpop fans from other groups that hates them and think that they take it as a privilege and unfair to other groups. The pressure they had since they’re getting bigger and bigger. One mistake will take other as an opportunity to bring them down. So it’s up to them. I will not question the goverment for the exemption if it happens. Cuz bts is one of the moneymaker as well as samsung and hyundai these two examples of brand that bts endorse increase more profit and demand globally even it is pandemic. Not mention last year that almost billion dollars they contribute to the sk economy exclude the tourism and other non- durable goods. Now 1.4 billion dollars they contribute in sk economy half of the year amidst the pandemic. On the other hand, the exemption needs to have high standard, also part of korean law but the changes is a long process. This is only my opinion.

@@cassandraanilom7074 at least BTS moved the conversation forward, although not voluntarily. I just wish that if they did get the exemption and they decided to take it, that male society in South Korea could just accept it. A lot of them are so selfish. Yes, they had to go and didn’t have a chance to avoid it, but if they had had the opportunity, they would had taken it. If they were in BTS’s position, they would definitely take the chance, because like they said, almost no one really wants to do the military service. And yet, because they themselves had to go through that, that everyone must, even at the detriment of great part of the country’s economy. But well, even if BTS do finally enlist, at least there was a conversation about it and I believe that’s very positive for such conservative culture. A lot of countries over the world moved to voluntary military service and yet South Korea is still adamant to talk about changing that, even when a large size of the male population would rather not go or do anything possible to avoid it. And I hope the conversation keeps moving forward, beyond just BTS.

Most entertainers will go into the public service route after they complete boot camp. Lee Seung Gi famously didn't go that route and decided to instead go into the Special Forces of the Army. One Korean singer, Yoo Seung John, said he would do his military service, but instead became a US citizen. He is now forever barred from entering S. Korea and after his appeals were denied. @lalitthapa1014 жыл бұрын
Well patriotism does play a part but not that much.The people of korea are smart and they know mandatory service is more than just having the pride of serving the nation.its also the fact The people know how fkced the military will get if mandatory service is not required. Just look at the data of how many people actually serve permanent in the military and the ones who are doing mandatory service.Its really low plus military is not an aspired job option in Korea as many would rather get office jobs or other occupations Add to that North Korea who have away big army.South will be in danger.Seeing current politics North Is very unpredictable and they can't just leave it. And the question of what's more patriotic.That depends.Patriotism is not broad and has many layers but there is certainly a different sense of pride in serving in a time when the two nations are still hostile and the war just ended formally in 2018

While I ain’t a Korean, I am a Singaporean male where we have the same 2 years mandatory National Service. Interestingly, I had a similar discussion with my army friends regarding this and I feel Singaporeans are more pragmatist than nationalists. The military wouldn’t collapse just because there’s 7 less enlistees, so why for the sake of “fairness” and symbolic values of serving the military would we give up on the extraordinary benefits BTS can bring to the country if they are allowed to not serve. In the end, I think Singaporeans are generally pragmatists and will choose tangible (economic benefits etc) over the intangible (symbolic values of national service, duty to country etc)

This is a brilliant reply. I personally haven't been dealt the hand of being effectively forced to do military service since I'm Canadian, but if need be I would definitely do military service. Based on that context, with the overarching reach that BTS has internationally, it would be completely asinine not to exempt them. Or at the very least delay the enlisting only after their careers simmer down around their 30's. It very ironic given that you mention that Koreans look more within intangibles i.e, duty and national service, with that lense, it would absolutely be more patriotic letting BTS exempt for the sake of promoting Korean culture, but in reality, the men that want BTS to be enlisted in the military do it out of spite. Also, the engineering doctorate, the only one that been overseas to the State realized the true influence of BTS internationally. I don't blame Koreans not realizing how big of an influence BTS has oversees since they live in Korea.

I think the reason why people are so adamant about BTS getting an exemption is because of the musical footprint they have internationally. Not only would going to the military hurt South Korea’s economy, personally I think BTS have done enough and served their country, and even up until now, have said they will enlist. I dont even know why there is an argument about this when The BTS members even said it countless of times that "whenever the country calls they are ready to serve" one thing is for sure I'd still support and would never trade BTS even with one active member left. I came here for BTS not for the whole Kpop .
