As a Cambodian who had experience of studying French, I’d say French is quite hard. But the thing is, most Cambodian never get stuck in the French pronunciation for too long, because our language consists of 74 letters which we broke the world record for the language with the most letters in the world🇰🇭 and that whole lot of letters give us the advantage of being good in pronouncing of nearly every languages in the world.

Ohh that’s actually very interesting to know!! Thank you for sharing this It would be so helpful if we all learnt Cambodian when little so we don’t have that much of pronunciation problems when learning another language 😭😂 I can never get rid of my ugly French accent when talking English and Spanish, because of mispronunciation mainly 👎 I wonder if that makes it also complicated for foreigners to learn Cambodian though
@SongKimAnn
@SongKimAnn 9 ай бұрын
@@mellifluousfear8355Hello! Thank you for your comment. From my experience as a native Cambodian, I would say that my own language is actually harder than English. And I only compare my own language to English because we mainly study Khmer and English in Cambodia. Unlike most of the languages in the world which mostly has only 2 forms of speaking, in Cambodian/Khmer, we have 5 forms of speaking which feels like completely different languages but those are still official Khmer languages. The 5 forms of speaking are: formal language, informal language, royal language, monk language, and rural language. FUN FACT: Most Cambodian/Khmer doesn’t speak or barely know how to speak in all of the 5 forms, even me!😅 Most of us can only speak the 2 main forms of speaking.
@SongKimAnn
@SongKimAnn 9 ай бұрын
@@mellifluousfear8355 for me, the only easy part in Khmer language is the grammar, and the rest just having me a very tough time and I struggled a lot when learning my own language. And I see a lot of foreigners having a lot of trouble with our 5 forms of speaking, even for us.😣 But don’t stress yourself out, Cambodian language is easier to learn once you enjoy it and it gets easier when you practice with native Khmer people. FUN FACT: Khmer takes a lot of time to learn but once you master it, you can easily get to pronounce nearly all of the languages around the world like their native speakers.

It's not that it's specially hard, but French uses sounds rarely used in many languages, dry sounds, like the famous "r" or the "s". And first of all to learn a language, it you have to learn to create sounds (twist your mouth out of habit). There is also the fact that certain vowel combinations are pronounced completely differently like "eau" (simply "o").

To answer the question at 6:55, yes, there are very precise rules for reading and pronouncing French words. In fact, once you know the set of rules, there are very few exceptions to those rules. On the other hand, English is much harder to master because there are no hard and fast rules for English pronunciation. For every rule there are many more exceptions.

There is a tip to know how to pronounce new french words- its the same as learning english phonetics but without the millions of exceptions english has. You'll usually see vowel groups and each one would have a specific sound. Like an/un/on/en and oui/eil/oiulle/elle etc. learning how these 'vowel groups' sound helps sound out new words
