In the 11:37, what he means is Korea had been China's tributary state from the Qing establishment in 17th century. So while Korea is given full autonomy on domestic affair, their military and foreign policy must alligned with Qing's China, making it de-facto a vassal state. You can still visit Independence Gate in Seoul which marks Korean independence from Qing following the Sino-Japanese war. Up until then, the Korean royals could only call themselves kings, subject to the emperor in China, but following that independence, the Joseon king declared himself emperor of Korea, thus founding the short-lived Korean Empire. Edit: Russo-Japanese → Sino-Japanese. My bad!

@@womenandsonDad Actually those are inaccurate because tribute missions were mostly nominal. Korea would send tribute, or a gift to China, and China would give a tribute or gift back. Also, Korea still viewed the Qing or the Manchus as barbarians that took over a country and that is why the vassal relationship was just a claim by the Qing. Korea always had its own autonomy even during the aftereffects of the Joseon-Manchu wars that ended in a stalemate.

Rising sun flag was the Japanese military's flag, and Japan have never used this as a national flag. Foreigners often use this flag as a Empire of Japan's flag but Empire of Japan's flag is the same as the current Japanese flag.

That doesn't mean the Rising sun flag is Empire of Japan's flag. This pattern originally represents good luck. They are sometimes attached to boats to pray for a big catch. Please do not misinterpret it.

Actually they used a darker red at the time for the hinomaru and the army flag. So technically they're not exactly the same.

15:50 The bombs were dropped on 6 Aug. ("Little Boy", Hiroshima) and 9 Aug. ("Fat Man". Nagasaki). It took several days of negotiations, but on 15 Aug. the Emperor broadcast the announcement that Japan would accept the Allies' terms of surrender, and fighting _mostly_ stopped. That's called V-J Day in the USA, Canada, and other places. The formal surrender document was signed on 2 Sept.

I just finished a long vacation that included Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I started on 2 Sep. So, that's an interesting coincidence. Went to both bomb sites and both museums. Those were rough to get through, but it's an experience that I'm glad that I got to have.

Very interesting video! I know a bit about the history of Japan from my own casual research and from watching Bill Wurtz's video, but it was interesting to see the perspective of Korea's history with Japan. It really shows that the two countries have a long and difficult history involving both positive exchanges of culture and commerce but also negative exchanges of war and domination. It's kinda like learning that a celebrity had an abusive relationship with an ex-spouse, it makes you realize that a lot of public image can be constructed to obscure the dark sides, and you need to see from other perspectives to learn that everything has its positives and negatives. Great video, dude!

The first article in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the First Sino-Japanese War is "China recognizes definitively the full and complete independence and autonomy of Korea, and, in consequence, the payment of tribute and the performance of ceremonies and formalities by Korea to China, that are in derogation of such independence and autonomy, shall wholly cease for the future." So, it is natural to assume a certain kind of ownership of Korea by China as the video says though Korea was not a part of China.

@@zizi2536 Japan has a lot of pride in the nation's history, even the darker parts of their history. I guess to a country like Japan, it's easier to cover up sins than it is to apologize. We're talking about the same country where civilians would kill themselves when American soldiers would take control of a Japanese city during the Second World War, because they thought death was better than surrender. I can't say too much about the issue though, because I haven't done a lot of research on it.

When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Koreans living in America realized that America would now fight Japan and free Korea from Japan, so they celebrated. The USA thought that the Koreans were cheering for Japan, and treated them like they were Japanese and enemies of America. It was a very tragic misunderstanding.

History major here majoring in Asian history. Korea never viewed the Qing as a suzerain. It is only the Qing that made those claims because of the aftermath of the Joseon-Manchu war. Also, Korea still viewed the Qing or the Manchus as barbarians that took over a country and that is why the vassal relationship was just a claim by the Qing in its annals, but it was never taken at its value in Korea. Korea always had its own autonomy even during the aftereffects of the Joseon-Manchu wars that ended in a stalemate. The Manchu Qing knew this so the first 200 years of the Joseon-Qing relationship was Qing Emperors trying to gain appeasement of the Joseon court in order to legitimize their rule of China

When it comes to Joseon-China, it is... complicated. Joseon got along fine with the Ming, fighting together against the Japanese in the Imjin War. This ended when the Later Jin (which became the Qing) rebelled and won against the Ming. King Injo supported the Ming and, in retaliation, the Qing invaded in 1627 and 1636. Korea lost and King Injo had to publicly submit to Hong Taji (Emperor Taizing). China didn't absorb Joseon but made it an independent tributary and the two nations got along fine for the next 250 years. After the Donghak Peasant Revolution amd Japan defeating China, Japan forced China to 'recognize Korea's independence' which really meant 'look the other way while we take control of the country for ourselves.'

I get a little laugh when people mispronounce names foreign to them, but I also know I would be the same if I tried to pronounce a word in a language foreign to myself. Back when I was a kid, everyone around me would say the Japanese city was called Hi-ro-shi-ma, but in reality Japanese pronounce that city as Hiroshi-ma. So I have much respect for people who try to pronounce a word from a foreign language only to get it wrong. It shows much more for how they try to discover a different culture and appreciating it even if they get a few things wrong.

August 15th is actually called the National Liberation Day of Korea. The day marks the annual anniversary of the announcement that Japan would unconditionally surrender on August 15, 1945. All forces of the Imperial Japanese Army were ordered to surrender to the Allies. Independent Korean governments were created three years later, on 15 August 1948. The atomic bombs were dropped on August 6th and 9th.

English was not from Latin it has other roots, but the romance languages are, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and so on. English has a Germanic base, not similar at all with Latin.

16:08 Fun fact: After WWII, Japan was forced to relinquish their military and land and Japan was technically "obliterated". The US actually offered the authority of monitoring the reconstruct of a new Japanese government to the leader of China (R.O.C.), Chiang Kai-shek, but Chiang refused and ask only for the Chinese territories that Japan had taken before WWII to be given back to China. With no one wanting to babysit the Japanese lands, Uncle Sam went in himself and hence modern day Japan was born and why they are so buddy buddy with the US now.

@@koreanguyyoungwoo8026 I've watched Namhansanseong and it's really fascinating. Byeongja horan actually could be avoided if Joseon follow Prince Gwanghae's foreign policy... Anw it's kinda hard to find a movie with Goryeo-Mongolian setting and the only movie is "Frozen Flower" (you'll find a scene where the Mongol emissary who spoke Mongolian are in the Goryeo court). While for dramas are "Empress Ki" and "Faith".

I kinda understand your view, Korea was never part of China but then maybe a Chinese person may say different depending on what they were taught. In my view as a neutral, China may have had a claim in some places around the boarder area, but that would be what I think would be closer to the truth. But in the areas now known as South Korea, I believe those places were entirely owned by Koreans. But once again, I am just a neutral outsider looking in and trying to find commonality between both sides of history.

It's telling about the relationship between Korea and China when Korean kings needed to be in good terms with the Chinese emperor to be left alone and allowed to mind their own business in running Korea. I guess the relationship is a lot like the one a bunch of countries have with the United States- technically not a part of America, and you'd piss off a lot of Koreans if you told them their country is "owned" by America- but they're in the sphere of influence. I guess Bill Wurtz wanted a short-hand to describe the relationship between Korea and China, and "vassal" or "tributary state" has too much nuance involved in it. The long and short of it is- if Koreans flipped off China back in the day and didn't recognize the Chinese Emperor's authority the way Japan didn't by having their own Emperors with hookers and blackjack, the Koreans would've had bad times, because China.

I do have to correct you there about English being based on Latin. That is incorrect. It's base is Old English, which is a Germanic language. The sentence structure and grammar is Germanic, yes there are more Latin based words in the English vocabulary then Germanic ones, but that is due to Christianity, which brought Latin and the Norman conquest which brought French. And French is a Latin based and derived language.

Spanish, French, Italian and English came from Latin, because of it we many many similarlies words. The topic came because Kanji. Kanji are from China, but we can find Kanji in Japanese language and Korean language too. I think king Sejong made the Hangul-Alphabet. English did not come from Latin, it does have a large percentage of words from Latin and French, but the language is from Old English. This is apart of the Germanic family. Latin is part of the Italic family, but if we're strictly speaking about the alphabet, then you're correct it is the Latin Alphabet, but the Latin Alphabet comes from Greek Alphabet and Greek Alphabet comes from Phoenician Alphabet.

@Daniel Rumbacher I cannot voach for it, but I picked up somewhere. There is a certain logic in it because humans reached Japan through the Korean peninsula. The theory that Japanese derived from an ancient Korean dialect doesn't seem to be very popular in Japan as they prefer to consider their language as a Linga Unica, with no relations like the Basque language. Also Japan for a very long time condisered Koreans as second rate people, It could be a relation like French and Rumanian, both derived from Latin, but with complete different sounds. Or when I compair the little that is know about Old-Dutch dating from abouth 1000 years ago I would not recognise Old Dutch as the ancester of Modern Dutch, I would rather think its a language spoken on the moon. So major shift in pronountion is possible

Donald Trump doesn't get American history wrong, it's the Left that teaches alternative history by talking about the 1619 Project, that the US was founded on slavery when it was actually founded in 1776 with its independence. The Left even is not even accurately taught like on slavery. The Leftist professors teaching alternative history, no wonder why certain schools and colleges are indoctrination camps that also make children hate their own country. The Left are even turning fascist as they claim that any opinion or fact that they are against is hate speech and that opposing views should be censored, either through cancelling like you could be fired just for coming out the closet as a conservative or even silencing you through violence as the Left says you should punch nazis and then claim that all conservatives and Trump supporters are nazis. Fortunately, when I looked at this “left”/“right” structure I realized it’s a bunch of B.S. It was created by some people that wanted to debate political ideologies, but they didn’t have the intelligence to understand them. Then it was pushed on us by politicians who see the divisiveness of the idea. If they have us voters fighting amongst ourselves, we can’t get the correct people in power, then the wrong people stay in power. @@mikek0135 I'm not on the right because of indoctrination, I do my continued research of political ideologies, policies and politicians to find out what I am and who I would support. I find myself being a national conservative despite growing up in a socialist-leaning area. Even when I was on the right, I found myself getting indoctrinated towards communism but then I did research and after a few months, I totally rejected it. You have to look at what both sides are saying on certain issues and then come to a conclusion so you don't get indoctrinated towards one side.

i find it interesting that korean comes from chinese. why dont koreans use the chinese letters then? i dont know anything about korea, but from seeing alone, i can see that chinese and japanese are related somehow. but the korean alphabeth looks so different that i wouldnt have guessed korean comes from chinese. the same goes for the language. for my western ear, japanese and chinese sound somewhat close. but korean sounds totally different to me. in my opinion korean is a lot more harder for western people than chinese or japanese.

You didn't mention that the U.S. fought on Korean side, but the communist North got help from China. Then Russia threatened to get involved, so China,U.S.Sued for peace and decided to split Korea up and (save face). South Korea is free from communism with the military and economic (money) help from the U.S. you insinuated that the U.S. helped Japan but not Korea...that is not true(lie).. U.S. helped both..but Japan is united because it an island and Korea is split because it's not(island)..like YOU referred to earlier in your video.. I agree with the flag statement. For all intents and purposes, the Japanese battleflag is the same as the Nazi or Confederate battle flag. Also, any communist Russian or Chinese flag should be included for the amount of death and suffering that was caused. Unfortunately, it is only winners that decide history. So, with Germany being the only totally occupied axis country in WW2, they were the only ones that faced the full backlash of their atrocities. Japan pretty much got off with an apology.

You needed explaining about Japan invaded in Korea at 16 century, but they finally failed because navy commander ‘Lee Soon Shin’ cut out Japanese ocean route. Modern history, Japan killed Korean Queen and colonized Korea for 36 years. They killed so many innocent Korean civilians and stolen so many Korean national treasures. Some of them Japanese destroyed, such as 60% of Korean king palace in Seoul. They never apologized what they did in Korea and never teach about their dark history. Their economy development was hold two good chances by Korean war(1950) and Vietnamese war(1970’s). But their economy develop was stop for 30 years and had huge government debt now. Japan become the third world country again. You are right that Korea was never part of China.
