I've seen lots of comments about Penelope Cruz not being Latina. Here's something that must be clear: Latin and Latin American are two different things. Latinos were only originally from Lacio, Itally, where the Latin language started to change and transform in what we know now as Romance Languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, Catalan, etc.). This means that people from those countries are Latinos. Now, Latin Americans are people from countries in the American continent that speak any derivatives from latin language. This is not the same as Hispanic because not all Latin Americans are Hispanic. Hispanic countries are only the ones conquered by the Spanish Crown, like most of the American continent, also Philippines, Guinea Equatorial and Western Sahara are Hispanic, Brazilian are not Hispanic. What happens is that in the USA is they recognized Latinos as people from Latin America and we adopted here. I'm studying translation, so I have to know and understand the language at its deepest, and to do so I have to comprehend the bases of Spanish (as you may notice so far, English isn't my native language,) in case someone wants to minimize my commitment.
