Fun fact about root beer. It was created by Pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires. Root beer was originally made to be a root tea made from the root of a sassafras tree. It goes back to 1875 with the commercial version starting in 1876. This could be why some say it tastes like medicine as it was made by a pharmacist. Personally, it doesn't taste like medicine(it's one of my favorite pops), but it does have a pretty unique taste to it. I quite like to put vanilla ice cream in it to make a root beer float.

Root beer is greatly hated outside of the US. Even IN the US, root beer started off as a pharmaceutical drink, made of sassafras. Sassafras is still used medicinally, though no longer in the drink. However, the drink still has that medicinal flavor. It's just that, in the US, we have come to associate that flavor as a sweet beverage, rather than medicine. But it is still a medicinal flavor - so it's understandable they associated it with pain patches or hospital smells. Dr. Pepper, too, has its origins in the pharmacy, and was used as a medicine. And I have always hated it - so I don't blame them for hating it, too. They were also spot on with their assessment of Yoohoo. Despite it being a popular drink, it DOES taste like chocolate drink powder mixed with water (which is pretty much what Yoohoo is), lacking in the mouth feel and richness of milk.

Root beer tastes like medicine because it's made with wintergreen extract as the primary plant flavor. Wintergreen tends to have a sweet, minty flavor, so a lot of people identify it with medicines. It also used to use sarsaparilla or sassafras root. Now they can't because the FDA deemed safrole (a chemical in sassafras) carcinogenic, so they switched to more wintergreen, vanilla, and other flavors. Doctor Pepper has a crap load of flavors, but the primary ones are cherries and cherrywood, cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla. Arizona Iced Tea is made in New York, not Arizona. And Capri Sun was invented in Germany and named after a popular Italian island resort off the coast of Naples.
@Dani_Reasor4 жыл бұрын
Snapple used to make a root beer that I liked very much. The company had put a lot of effort into being known for never using any artificial colors or flavors. It was the most flavorful root beer I've ever tasted and had a nice dry quality due to not using corn syrup as a sweetener, but it was also as clear as water because there was no food coloring. I wonder if that might have been why it didn't sell well.

People in Australia also think root beer smells and tastes like medicine. I'm an American, and root beer is one of my favorite drinks!

I also am American but actually hated all of those drinks myself until trying them years later. Like I was always a Dr. Pepper kind of guy but one day my family were at a barbecue summer party and they didn’t have Sprite or Dr. Pepper, since they had run out of both, but they did have Root Beet and so I tried it and hated it. Then a few months later, when I was 13, I tried it again at a bar, this time Saranac Root Beer, and this one I actually liked it.

Not enough water for Crystal Light. And apple Caprisun isn't common in the US.
