In medieval korea(chosun), there's a national examination to recruit talented man in military. In that examination, archery test was included and actually there's no extra score to hit every target. Because everyone did it.

watching this makes me proud. Koreans aren't the only ones who used composite bows. Mongols, the manchurians, Turkish and many others used bows like these but Korean ones are amongst the most compact, beautifully designed yet extremely powerful ones. I can't wait to get my own Korean Bow

There were several things wrong in this video. In the beginning the korean said the korean bow is the best because it can shot 145m far and no other bow in the world could do that which is obviously wrong to anyone who knows even a little bit about traditional archery. Also his explanation why korean archers use a thumb ring was wrong. It is not only korean archers but all archers from every culture who use(d) short composite bows with a long draw length use(d) their thumb instead of the three-finger-draw because the angle the bow string makes is a lot closer when the bow is shorter and drawn further. Just imagine drawing an english longbow 32" back and then a short korean horsebow drawn 32". The angle string has at the point where you place you finger(s) is very different. In a short bow there is no room for three fingers. And of course he got it wrong that he called the olympic bow and archery "western archery". I

is there any mistake 145 metre range is longer than any other traditional bow?
@JTFII8 жыл бұрын
its honestly an exaggeration; a prideful legend of the traditional korean bow. 145 is a huge distance for any archer. most of their shots didnt even hit the target but if you can shoot at drastically long distances, 20-30 meters means nothing

A hungarian archer (Tamás Mónus) shoot over 500 meters with traditional bow.
@Excalibure6668 жыл бұрын
Valencia Lalix, flight shots and target shots are totally different. Ottoman " Iskender the Tozkoparan" shot 826 metre in 1550. Actually minimum requirement to join Ottoman Archery Club (Okcular Tekkesi) is making minimum 594m shot. (Toz-koparan means Bow-Breaker roughly, he was able to break 150+ lbs bows.) So, Its almost impossible to hit a target from over 800 metre. (except by luck) but it's too wrong to say "145 metre korean shooting is longer than any traditional bows" I'm sure many asiatic archers can get similiar results with koreans.(if not better)
@lalixvalencia13408 жыл бұрын
It's true.

Okay so strong Korean bows and other bows alike (like Turkish bows) can easily go over 145 meters.. But Shooting as far as you can and hitting a target are two different things. Koreans actually shoot the 145 meter targets at traditional ranges and they were trained to do so in medieval times. They shoot a 70 meter target in modern day Olympic competitions so you can imagine how far 145 meter is. There are records of Korean and Turkish bows shooting as far as a thousand meters. But that's the bows capacity and not the archers.

Actually the current record in range is held by a turkish type of bow :P
@mintyfresh48555 жыл бұрын
No it isn't. They're talking about at an actual range with a distance for practicing target archery for not only people but also the military. Turkish archery focuses on flight archery which is vastly different than target archery. Flight arrows have shorter vanes----not as accurate but flies farther and faster. So accuracy isn't the focus of flight archery. Turkey has the longest flight of an arrow but not the longest target archery range; of which it is debated. But in terms of proof and depiction, Korea has the strongest case for it. There is a record that English longbow men used to shoot 200 meters, so that would have beaten Korea's record except for a major flaw; it is no long practiced nationally as a tradition. So Korea does win the longest traditional archery range by technicality, but not historically speaking. Does this clear things up?

No it isn't. Korean bows, moreover Korean composite bows founded in archeological sites valuate before the birth of Mongol identity. Which means, it's tradition of bowcraft and archery can trace down to ancient period even before 'Mongol, as a ethnic term' existed.

The earliest record of the Mongols is the government account of Tang dynasty(618~907), you should notice in this time period 'Mongol' was not as an ethnic group, just a Altaic tribe name. Korean bow of these form (composite-horn material) are found in archeological sites - its date proven to be goes back to beforce christ - also record of king sansang(197~227) indicates he presented these bows to Sun Quan of Wu .
