Korean-War Vet tries REAL Korean food 72 years later!

Today, we have a special video for the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War.
With the help of the Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, we talked to Alan Guy MBE, a Korean War veteran. He fought during the war for 18 months at the age of 19. And for the past 20 years, he has served as the Korean Liaison Officer for the British Korean War Veterans Association.
We had the privilege of listening to some of his stories over some Korean food.

국가보훈처의 도움으로 영국인 참전 용사이신 앨런 가이님과 함께 이야기를 나눠봤습니다.
열아홉이란 어린 나이에 18개월 동안 한국전쟁에 참전하시고, 지난 20년 동안은 영국참전용사협회의 연락관으로서 일하시면서 영국에서 한국전쟁의 인식을 올리는데 힘을 쓰고 계시는데요. 멋지고 유쾌하신 앨런님과 좋아하시는 한국 음식을 먹으면서 뜻깊은 시간을 보내게 됐습니다.

한국이 작은 나라는 아니죠. 사람들이 자꾸 영토로 국가의 규모를 판단하는데 아무리 영토가 넓다 하더라도 사람이 안살면 의미가 없죠. 예로 쓸모없는 땅이 대부분인 러시아의 경우 실질적인 인구 대다수는 모스크바 유럽쪽에 모여살죠. 그런데 그 작은 섬에 사는 일본을 보세요. 인구가 러시아(1억4천만) vs 일본(1억2천만)으로 비슷한데 경제규모도 2022년 백만달러기준 러시아(180만 11위) vs 일본(490만 3위) 어느 나라가 더 거대할까요? 실질크기가 유럽만한 카자스흐탄 인구가 1900만 vs 북해도보다 조금 더 큰 한국 5100만에 경제규모 카자흐스탄(19만 56위) vs 한국 (180만 12위) 한국과 카자흐스탄 어느 나라가 더 거대할까요? 한국은 세계적으로도 절대 작은 나라가 아닙니다.

My father fought in Korea in the U.S. Air Force. His air wing was based in Niigata, Japan, but he spent some time in Korea and he loved the country. We always wanted to visit the places he saw and served, but he passed from lung cancer way too early.

My grandfather (a Canadian) felt the exact same way about his return to Canada that this chap did. He was so embarrassed about how poorly his own country treated him that he threw all his medals out, and not as a young man, but in his 60s or 70s after he returned to Korea and was treated with utmost respect. He loved the Korean people and had nothing but nice things to say about them.

As a South Korean living in a southern state in America (Georgia) I was not taught very much about the Korean War in school. Apparently it was one of the most important wars in history and one of the main reasons why communism didn’t completely takeover the eastern hemisphere. Thank you to all veterans for your service! My grandpa 손 병철 spent his life in the ROK army and worked up to general before he passed in 1992. Without the help of Korean Allies I wouldn’t be here typing this comment today!

My grandfather went to Korea as well and served at the Swedish Red Cross hospital camp.. the only hospital that both took in and treated people from both army sides and also took alot out of their way to help the civilans. Alan sounds to have had kind of the same experience. My grandfather were to be joining the olympics as a runner but turned it down in order to be able to go to Korea to help the people and were a true hero to me.

My grandpa was a Korean War veteran. He died before I could ask him any questions about it. The only photos I have are him working at a Korean orphanage, playing with the kids. He loved working with children, so I'm not surprised that he spent lots of time there trying to help them.

I have a father who has served in the military for over 30 years. So I grew up knowing a little bit about the military's mission. I visited London in November, and there were decorations in front of the cathedral to commemorate the Memorial Day, where there was a small space to commemorate the participants of the Korean War. Remembrance of them was one of the most important moments for me on the trip. Thank you. Thank you. 저도 30년 넘게 군생활을 해온 아버지가 있어요. 그래서 군인의 사명감에 대해 조금이나마 알면서 자랐습니다. 런던에 11월에 방문한 적이 있는데 메모리얼 데이 기념 행사로 성당앞에 많은 군인들을 추모하는 장식들이 있었는데 그곳에서 한국전쟁에 참여한 분들도 추모하는 작은 공간이 있었어요. 그 순간 그 분들을 추모하는 일이 그 여행에서 제게 매우 중요한 순간 중 하나 였습니다. 감사합니다. 감사합니다.

I'm not even Korean, but I became emotional when he was reciting the poem he made. I wish my countrymen realize how history truly has an effect on us. Seeing how Koreans love their country now and would cry just hearing about their history makes me think of when will the Philippines be like that.

This made me very emotional. My grandfather was a Korean War veteran and he passed away 12 years ago. I wish I would have asked him more about his experiences there as well as his feelings about it later in his life. He was such a hardworking and caring man. I wish my father was alive to go back and see how Korea turned out. He was there at the beginning of war and towards the end of Korean Conflict it's where he met my mom and I was born there as well. Hopefully I'll be able to go this August to visit family. Cant believe 72 yrs are passed...Young soldiers back then were mostly 1930's born, so its sad that only few remain in 2022. My dad came from NKorea n decided to stay in SKorea. All his life after 1950 war missed his family in NKorea n never saw his family again. I could not comprehend his pains back then now as I got older I truely love all of VA and their service including your dad.

I love this. My grandfather is also a Korean War veteran, he was born in 1925 and is still living. This lovely gentleman spoke of ptsd and I truly feel my grandfather still deals with that as he will not speak of the war or his experiences there. Thank you for this episode , it was really lovely.

20년전 민간단체의 후원으로 당시 참전용사분들을 초청해서 관광하는 행사에 봉사갔었는데 우리팀에 미군 3분이 계셨음…그때가 2001년 가을이었는데 관광 코스 중에 상암경기장이 있었음.. “ 내년에 여기에서 월드컵이 열려요 “ 라고 말씀드렸더니 용사 한분이 놀랍다면서 전쟁 당시 한국이란 나라가 없어질줄 알았는데 이렇게 발전했다며 감탄하시더라 ..그리고 본인의 형과 친구가 전사하셨는데 그들이 한국이 발전하는 과정을 같이 봤을거라며 그들의 희생이 헛되지 않도록 이렇게 잘 살아줘서 고맙다고 어린아이처럼 엉엉 우시는데 거기있던 모두가 겉이 울었었음.. 그 분들 가시는 날까지 가장 많이 하신 말씀이 고맙다였음… 사실 우리가 할말인데..

"The Korean people are the ones who've done all the work to make such a wonderful country" So true. They rose from literal ashes. And what a beautiful, humble statement to make. I'm used to the idea of soldiers and veterans (in America, at least) being quite arrogant and puffing their chests out at going to help the "needy" folks in "lesser" countries (completely disregarding the suffering of the native people and our own roles in creating the conflict). This man is nothing of the sort. You can feel the genuine respect and admiration he has for Korea in his voice and eyes. He doesn't consider himself a hero, but rather a person who did the right thing for humanity's sake. Bravo.

@14:18 I nearly fell out of my bed from the surprise of seeing the "Memorial Hall for Ethiopian Veterans in the Korean War"! I didn't realize that Ethiopian solders were also sent to fight on behalf of now S. Korea in the Korean War. The bravery of their 'Kagnew Battalions' is well known to us. They were ordered by the emperor to "fight until you win, or fight until you die", and they did so. They fought 253 battles and were never defeated, especially there's not even a single prisoner from them. But it makes me sad that they were treated as traitors after their government became communist.

The Korean conflict was WW3 in everything but the name. 55 countries were involved and that’s just from counting the south side, many undisclosed number of nations aided the north as well despite not officially being able to claim so due to politics(these people went to call their forces polices to get around to the treaties).

I am shocked that many soldiers were treated the way they didn't deserve when returning home. As Koreans, we don't often hear or learn about the after-war stories. This video absolutely needs to be used for educational purposes to teach young generations that probably don't have much knowledge about the war and sacrifices. Thank you so much for sharing your story and experience. All the soldiers who sacrificed and risked their lives to save one country are not forgotten and will never be. My grandfather, who was a veteran of the Korean War, passed away at dawn on Memorial Day(South Korea) on June 6. We are still having a hard time.. But it's getting better little by little. Praying for the repose of his soul.

My late grandfather fought in the Korean war for the US Navy. And I've fought in the Iraq war for the US Air Force. I'm glad to the Korean War Vets out there that campaigned after the war. Because of them when I got back from war was a different view than those in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

This literally made me weep! My father was born in 1931 and went to Korea at age 16. He was in the branch of the American Army that quickly became the Air Force. He was a bomb loader and he was frankly horrified by how many bombs we were dropping every day. The whole thing was very traumatizing for him and he rarely talked about it. My son is going to the army next week and is scheduled for training that may put him in South Korea. He’s quite excited to think he may start his service where his grandfather began his. The Korean War memorial in Washington DC is really one of the most beautiful ones even if it is rather tiny compared to all of the others. My father passed in 2008 and I think he would of loved your channel!

As a US veteran, I appreciate you guys shedding light on UK veterans! I had the pleasure of meeting armed forces from the UK, Canada, and Australia and consider them amongst the best people you could get to know, I was not in the Korean war but Operation Desert Shield/Storm, many of my uncles were in Vietnam, my Dad served in Korea for many years when I was a child and I had the pleasure of visiting Korea back in 1990. I hope one day that the country is unified and stays safe and prosperous . Back to what I was originally saying though, it is rare you see any channels that have UK veterans on it, there are a few but we Americans have all these coming home, suprise military homecoming, etc it be great to get more from the UK and other countries talking to veterans, I think thats why I love the series with Major Charles so much it makes me feel like I am back serving!! 많은 말씀들 중에서 저에게 가장 기억에 남았던 내용이 한국 방문하시고 오랜만에 밤 잠을 주무실 수 있던 한국 참전 용사 분의 이야기와 시 한 편을 읊어주시는 장면이네요. 듣다 울컥하기도 했고, 정말 이때까지 들어왔던 한국 전쟁에 관한 모든 이야기나 정보들 중 가장 많은 생각이 들게 했던 말씀들이었어요. 말씀 하나하나가 전부 뭐라고 해야 할까.. 많은 의미들이 담겨있는 느낌이네요. 한국 참전 용사분들 잊지 않겠습니다!

The story about turning up to the police station after arriving home from fighting a war and being turned away is just heartbreaking. It's like a final blow in a battle for recognition. Imagine putting your life on the line and then being told you doing so isn't recognized with any sort of care or concern. That would hurt for a very long time.

My dad was stationed in Korea when he was in the army and it made him hate most of the food but one of his best friends he made was Korean and he introduced us (me and my brother) to Korean food and we love it along with a lot of other types of Asian foods. Our eyes were opened up to it thanks to my dad’s friend.

I have a picture of him with a little Korean boy that he helped pay his hospital bill since the little boy had hurt his hand and my grandfather didn’t want them to just amputate it. I’m not sure who that little boy is but whenever I see that picture I can’t help but smile at the difference my grandfather made in his life! And the lives of so many others! I am proud to be his granddaughter:). I hope someday I can go to your beautiful country and see the War Memorial there and walk where he once walked.

My grandfather worked his way up and became a us lieutenant in the Korean War, married my grandmother, a Seoul native and war survivor. They both have seen things I could never begin to comprehend. Grandmother passed away a year and a half ago, I miss her terribly, and it’s hard to see my grandfather alone, but she lives on within me and the ways she taught me how to love. She lost much of her mother tongue to imperial Japanese subjugation, I want to learn Korean and try to find the remnants of my family in South Korea that she had to leave behind

I was in tears from the part where he was told to walk home, 5 miles after coming home from war. Omg i couldn't stop the tears, by the time he recited the poem i couldn't see the screen through my tears. This was sooooooo good , i laughed mostly cried but damn, i enjoyed him
