Fun fact: the short anime for Mario actually outlines Bowser's affections for Peach, as do quite a few of the other games, so that bit is canon to the overall narrative of the Super Mario Bros. Bowser sees Mario as a romantic rival, and is driven into a jealous rage when Mario comes to rescue her.

Mario got sucked into the pipes in the first place because there was a massive city leak that he saw on T.V where the broadcaster was asking "who will save Brooklyn?" - so the movie tried to bring it full circle. Loved the Donkey Kong fight scene too!

Off the topic, but I always loved Mario series as great example that characters don't need to look like you to be a role model/inspiration for kids. As asian little girl, me and my elder sister loved Super Mario games, and I was always playing and imagining myself as Luigi. I even had Mushroom costume made from this game. None of us ever wanted to be Peach.

I watched this in theaters with my older sister, and when Peach force-fed Bowser the blue mushroom I deadass said “you get no bitches” out loud. Nobody heard me, but I still can't believe I didn't come up with “you get no PEACHES”
