It’s fascinating to me how they didn’t realize the Back To School Essentials was about a school shooting until they were told at the end… Whereas every single American probably figured it out as soon as we saw the kid running through the hallway… I hope one day Americans can expect schools to be places of peace, not mass shootings
@DimityPockets Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I completely agree with this. Im actually an American graduate of homeschooling (former public schooler), and even I recognized that it was a shooting as the kid began to run down the hall. Personally, I’ve only ever experienced a shooting while going to get pizza with my family. It wasn’t targeted towards civilians though, our guess was that it was two rival gangs. My big brother and I huddled behind a car wheel while my dad tossed my little brother over us and then flattened himself to shield us as the shots rang out overhead. Around 15 minutes after the first shots were fired, we were inside eating pizza as if nothing had happened. It’s certainly a scary reality over here, even for homeschoolers.

as someone who grew up in america and went to highschool during the peak of shootings, can confirm we watched these PSAs and had shooter drills as often as fire drills. the fire drills were congruent with shooter drills (dont leave classrooms if the fire alarm goes off until the office makes an announcement to over loud speakers. this way, a shooter couldnt pull the drill to gather everyone in one place). i was legitimately worried about there being a shooting at my school before i graduated. luckily covid took that fear away since school moved online for the last bit of my highschool edit: someone corrected my "pique to peak" but i cant find their comment. fixed it, thanks! i write a lot of these comments a little high so forgive any grammar or spelling errors i may make lol, i try my best. that one usually irks me so im disappointed in myself for missing it

There was one time in the beginning of my sophomore year, there was a kid walking with his hoodie up and earbuds in, he couldnt hear the person trying to talk to him, he was in the color guard so he had one of those fake gun things on him and someone thought he was going to shoot up the school so they reported it and the whole school went into lockdown for a good hour to two hours. This year my senior year of high school we had a lot of times where we went on a lockdown and luckily it was just some kid spreading a lie. They said there was an active shooter at a nearby shopping center, so they said we are on a secure perimeter, they kept updating us until they officially said it was a lock down and they weren’t joking. But my special Ed teachers one of the most understanding and caring people I know, continued to have us work I was terrified I remember that awful moment of having to text my mom “I love you” before telling her what was going on. Earlier in the year there was a stupid stunt someone pulled by blowing up a toilet (literally) with pure sodium (I think that’s the chemical (?) they used) so it exploded with contact of water. The next day the BEGINNING of the day there was a bomb threat and I had a sub that day and you know what she did? She left I don’t know where she went but she left us there. They didn’t tell us it was a bomb but they said to “start the evacuation procedures we will all meet up at the baseball field” a lot of us not understanding but afraid and some who speculated it was a bomb threat since that’s also way to common here. Anyway I remember going out and being terrified, hugging my friend we didn’t have a teacher, we had to follow the class in front of us. Sitting in that field texting my parents seeing the news helicopter go over, it was awful. The incident with the “shooter” happened really soon after that.

When I was in my last year of high school in 2016, my school went into lockdown for about an hour and a half. None of us knew what was going on, I just remember my teacher told us we had to stop what we were doing, turn the lights off, lock the door, and hide in the corners of the room where we would not be visible from the window on the door. It took us until halfway through the lockdown for us to figure out someone had brought a loaded gun with a kill list onto campus and police were searching for him. There were police everywhere when we were finally allowed out and I remember my mom was in a panic when I texted her what was going on. Weirdly enough, nobody among us seemed very scared. Our school always got shooting and bomb threats, and lockdowns happened all the time because of gang activity, so we weren't worried about anything since we didn't hear any actual shots fired. Luckily the kid got caught without firing a shot. It never ended up on the news, so all I know is apparently he accidentally exposed his plans early and that's why he didn't get a chance to actually shoot anyone before the school reacted. It was a weird experience and probably the closest I'd ever gotten to actually being in an active school shooting.

I had a lock out in elementary school and a lockdown in high school. The lockdown was because of a body found on campus (no crime was discovered so I guess someone just died on campus?). But the lock out in elementary was because of a bomb threat. Someone said they put a bomb in our school and we basically just had outdoor class that day while police stood around the parking lot. I’m sure the building was searched as well but I don’t remember seeing anyone but normal cops.

That is absolutely horrible... it should be the opposite. It should be encouraging them to be mindful of others who are also fleeing, meaning not locking them out or whatever. People need to come together in situations like these. And we need to f*cking allow our teachers to conceal carry if they wish (with training and classes). If we have the adults fairly armed, that reduces the likelihood of being a target. People chose these places because they KNOW that no one will be carrying. If they instead of clear knowledge that hey, there are about 20-30 people potentially able to stop them, they absolutely will not do such things.

They are insulting, tropes, and liberal caricatures that do not exist. The real problem is the left wing in America removed our ability to lock up criminally insane. instead they shove pills down their throats, call them cured, then send them home. Eventually they stop taking the pills, snap, and go on killing sprees with guns, knives, swords, acid, bombs, etc. The problem is we must start locking away the criminally insane again....

These PSA's are INSANE, glad y'all showed these to them they really are disturbing but pretty necessary! This year we had a lot of crazy stuff happen at my school- we had a lockout for about 2-3 hours because there was a shooting outside (people actually saw it happening, and there were a lot of cops), one of the bad guys (I heard this from the cop that works at our school) accidently cut off his finger, left the scene to the hospital, then the doctors had to go back and pick up his finger off the street, afterwards he went to jail! And then a little bit afterwards we actually went through this program called Every 15 Minutes (it's about drunk driving)- if you don't know what that is they basically do this thing where they find students and teachers and they have them sign something so then they are the "dead" people either they are just ghosts wondering around the school and during that time Grim Reapers go around the school collecting them and they leave the class (if you are dead you can not talk to ANYONE no texting no nothing, you also can't do your work either and they will have you stay at a hotel/motel for a night or two)- or they have people in the "accident" and one of the people actually went into a helicopter to the hospital while others who were in the accident got to go into a hearse. They made a little movie of it but it's not the greatest because they really liked playing music like one minute it's a sad Billie Eilish song the next it's a Taylor Swift song (forgot the name of it), but yeah it was very interesting and crazy if you guys want to show them that as well!

As a teenager in America nothing is scarier than a school shooting even the thought of one. I'm not in school anymore but all my siblings are and I worry for them everyday. One time there was an accidental unplanned lock down (basically everyone hides from the shooter during a lock down) and everyone was crying all I can remember was the thought of making sure I had my phone to tell my mom I love her. It's so sad we have to go through this. Even in the halls if we hear a loud noise like maybe someone threw something jng or popped a water bottle cap we all scream and everyone gets nervous until we realize it was just some kid playing around.

These PSAS are not often shown at my school. My English teacher did have us do a lesson on the effects of alcohol and drugs which was a bit of a sensitive topic to me due to my parents both having histories in drugs and my dad is a heavy alcoholic. In my school a senior nearly died from an overdose while doing drugs in the woods literally near our school, they had two of their friends there. One was a junior who knew what to do in this situation which was sad because you wouldn’t know what to do in this situation if you’ve never witnessed it or had to know due to a close one who did drugs and overdosed often, this case was only allowed to be shared with my class due to the identities were protected and the student who did the overdosing had already graduated, this was only one of the many cases. On the topic of school shootings my friend who goes to another school( they moved, originally went to my school) had a school bombing( NOT A THREAT) and a student who pulled out a knife and threatened to hurt people, it resulted in one hurt student if I remember correctly. Thankfully she was ok but I did remember crying because I was scared it could’ve been her. My school has gotten many shooting and bombing threats that aren’t intended as jokes. They were serious and planned, many freshmen were terrified because they received these news before any of the juniors seniors did, by the time I received the email by the school warning us of the bomb or shoot in threat it was the next day. Bullying is also a huge problem, my school has so many rumors about lingering ghosts because of its records for student suicides, an 18 guy who didn’t even go to our school and dated a lunch lady…(who by the way broke up with him and was 36) made the decision to make a shooting threat and than shoot himself in front of the school while kids watched in utter shock and horror, this was before I was at this school, that incident took place on one of my teacher’s first year teaching at my school. Bullying is also a big case at my school. Sexual harassment and assault( through my experiences throughout all of the schools I went to.) American school system is very extremely broken, I have put in reports for millions of things. Even the fact that there have been years of reports done by so many kids about a pedo teacher yet the school refuses to acknowledge this is disappointing. I genuinely hope America finds a way to fix this system before even more lives are lost. Because the amount of deaths caused by all of these cases are too high, beyond even 0 is too high. We shouldn’t worry for our lives in a place where we’re meant to be educated.

I remember one time at school during lunch, a kid popped a bag of chips so loud it echoed. The lunch room went silent for 5 seconds. Its crazy to think that we have to go through the fear of going through such a thing. For me it was hard to believe it didnt happen anywhere else until i watched foreigners give such a shocked reaction. One time i told a friend (she lives in a different country) that we were doing Lock Down Drill. She was surprised and asked me what that was. I explained and that was the first time the reality had hit me that school shootings aren't and shouldnt be normal.
@dianaaquamire535 Жыл бұрын
I get that, one time my friend and I were at the mall coming back from a school event and someone accidentally knocked over a wooden sign and my friend's first reaction was to run as far away as possible because of the fear. I just turned around and tried to see what it was. We realized it was a wooden sign that made the loud noise and not a gun, but the safer option would have been to run had it been a gun. It wasn’t though which was a relief, but these videos make me realize America does have a terrible gun problem that hasn’t gotten any better.
@nikimeowzers1720 Жыл бұрын
@@dianaaquamire535 oh yeah definitely. It's a like fight or flight response at this point compared to foreigners who would just jump at the sound of a bang or give no reaction at all. Its not normal and a lot of Americans (especially politicians) down play how guns affect children/people in the country. One time I was at a fair and soon a rush of people started running out of the fair, parents dragging their kids, teens screaming and running and we stopped a girl and asked "what's going on?" And she just yelled "GUN." It was scary and thankfully there was no gun, it was a knife fight, but I remember my heart dropping to my shoes. I was shocked but its a realization that it can happen anywhere and that things need to change

I was in 7th grade, I didn't take it seriously at the moment, but it hit me after wards on what could have happened. I'll be going to high school with that same person next year. My district has a history of bomb threats and shooting threats. The reason we are so "calm" is because we were taught to be from the ripe age of 4 when we have the first drills in kinder. If we aren't calm and quiet, they'll find us and we'll be the next kids you see on the memorials and on the news.

I live in the US and though my school was considered small and relatively safe we still had times where we had to lockdown. The main one I remember was that someone had called and said that there was an explosive in the bathroom. It turned out to be a bluff but it was still terrifying to be in that situation because we wouldn’t leave for fear of someone waiting outside. Felt safest in my agriculture classes because we were able to arm ourselves with various farming tools tbh. Don’t know the solution to the problem because firearms are a big part of maintaining livestock here, but we should definitely know the signs of trouble

As an American teenager, I’ve never seen any of these PSAs, but I do feel the impact of them and how useful they can be. The 2nd PSA about gun violence made me tear up a bit when the girl was in the bathroom calling her mom. I felt the genuine fear that comes in these situations. I definitely feel the impact all these PSAs intended to leave, and I do think it’s sad that, in a way, these kinds of issues are a bit normalized because of how often they happen (shootings and drug use).

As a new mom this scares the crap out of me. In America there seems to be an excessive amount of shootings. Things happen all over the world, all different things, but just because it happens doesn't mean it's ok. I remember when I used to go to school, these were things that were practically unheard of & now they have to teach young children about shooters & have a more active plan if something like that happens. Makes me horrified to send my baby to school when he's old enough. It's always a risk being a parent, & life is always unpredictable, but the point is, if people honestly got their act together that wouldn't necessarily be an issue. Dare to dream a perfect world, right? Is it achievable? Yeah, but not with the attitudes here, that's for sure. 😒😔

As a graduate of homeschooling who had started out in public school, I would love to encourage you to consider homeschooling. The risks are substantially lowered, your child can work at his or her own pace, and you can tailor your child’s curriculum based on your child’s needs. Personally, I’m dyslexic with ADHD. The public school system couldn’t (or rather wouldn’t) educate me in a positive way due to not being able to provide tailored assistance aside from putting me in a special needs class. Once I was pulled out by my mom and enrolled into a co-op, my education, social life, and general quality of life improved. I really can’t recommend homeschooling enough to new parents, especially this day and age. It’s a big and slightly scary jump, but it really is worth it.

@@laneyshab The amount of guns circulating in america combined with society's perception of guns, means that citizens will always have an easier time acessing guns in america regardless of if they suddenly become illegal or not. This stems from the idea of never giving government full control of its citizens. History has repeatedly shown what happens when a government with all of the power consolidated to the few becomes corrupt. The sentiment of not trusting government is a very valid point because of corruption and changing leading representitives. But this obviously comes at a cost. The best solution for now is to push states to introduce policies that decrease gun violence through highly trained armed security, anti bullying policies, mental health help, and restricitions on a person when it comes to their mental health. If you can't win, you have to compromise. If you want to solve the issues, you can't just parade around someone else's argument. Think for yourself because politicians don't care about actually solving the problem. They act like the issue is black and white, when in reality, there is a lot of gray area.

I remember I had my first shooting drill in elementary school, except there was a sub that day. She had convinced us it was real. I remember all of us being huddled in the back the the class under a long table in rows. The teacher was sitting there screaming at us about how if we were loud we could die and all this other stuff that has meshed together in my brain. I remember my best friend was in front of me and I was hugging her because she was shaking and there was a girl nearby hyperventilating because her little brother was in a different class on the other side of campus. Classmates were seriously sitting there planning who they would use as shields, escape routes, jumping out of windows, possible weapons. Then the administration came knocking on doors to let us know it was over but we didn't know that because all of us were convinced there was an actual shooter at school. By this point half of us were crying. Sure, it wasn't real but it was still traumatizing and the fact that we even have to have these drills at such a young age is mortifying. I was 8.
