the first one actually is 16. you do brackets first, which is 4. then you have 8/2x4. now you just go in order because division and multiplication is counted as one, so whichever comes first you. so you do 8/2 which is 4. 4x4 = 16. (this is how i was taught, i live in canada)

In America we use pemdas (parentheses exponents multiply divide add subtract) meaning 2x4 first then 8/8 so 1

@@heavenlee6464 PEMDAS is an acronym to help you to remember the order, but what most people don't realize is that Multiplication and Division are equal and Addition and Subtraction are equal. You should think of it as P-E-MD-AS. The multiplication and division are done in order from left to right, whichever comes first. The same is true for addition and subtraction (whichever comes first from left to right).

There are two different math systems (Unfortunately I forgot what they are named).With one system, 16 comes out. But only if you don't stick to the rule bracket first. Otherwise, 1 comes out. The calculator calculates with the rule brackets first. So if you enter the whole calculation as it stands there, 1 comes out of him as well. That is why both answers are correct. ^^

If pemdas were simple you'd know the order of solving would go like this: 8÷2(2+2) > 8÷2(4) > 4(4) > 16 The order of operations for pemdas is: pe for in parentheses and exponents first, md second for multiply and divide second, as last for adding and subtracting, and then everything else is done in order from left to right. Doing the parentheses portion first just means solving what's in parentheses first, but once that's done the parentheses just means you're multiplying. So, the division must be done first since it's at the beginning of the equation.

*If anyone curious or confused about that math problem.* Everyone is in agreement about the first step: simplify the addition inside the parentheses. 8÷2(2 + 2) = 8÷2(4) This is where the debate starts. The answer is 16 If you type 8÷2(4) into a calculator, the input has to be parsed and then computed. Most calculators will convert the parentheses into an implied multiplication, so we get 8÷2(4) = 8÷2×4 According to the order of operations, division and multiplication have the same precedence, so the correct order is to evaluate from left to right. First take 8 and divide it by 2, and then multiply by 4. 8÷2×4 = 4×4 = 16 This gets to the correct answer of 16. If it was somewhat 100 years ago and you saw 8÷2(4) in a textbook. Yes, many people misinterpret parenthesis/brackets in PEMDAS/BEDMAS. A number next to parentheses is another way of indicating multiplication, but does not give it priority. Only when an operation is being completed within the parentheses does it have priority. (but ultimately these math problems are just posted online to make people bicker to begin with haha)

In Germany we have a rule that says "Punkt vor Strich" which means point ( • = × multiplication, : = ÷ dividation) before line (+ addition, - subtraction). So doing multiplication and dividation before addition and subtraction. Example (I do it without points now): 2(4) = 2×4 = 8 So from what I understand your walkthrough was not correct in the sense of going from left to right. Please correct me if I am wrong though 😊. But from my understanding it would be: 8÷2(2+2) = 8÷2×(2+2) = 4×(2+2) = 8+8 = 16 But in the end you get the same results for both ways and both ways are not wrong. Just one more strict let's say.

I guess I learned the old way because I learned PEMDAS. Parenthesis first, then exponents, then multiply, divide, add, subtract. We weren't taught that multiplication and division were the same so go left to right. I got "1" as the answer. I was born in Jamaica but raised in NY. Math hurts my brain, lol

I was taught the same way and NEVER heard that multiplication and division were interchangeable. I feel like, if that's the case, then we're in for a world of trouble and I don't know how architects are going to make buildings. Because one will say well, these are interchangeable and the results vary and then a building falls down. Like......unless we're talking theoretical math, that's not how PEMDAS works and 1 is the correct answer.

This is why they should teach with (÷) in schools. The dots represent where you should put the numerator (above) and denominator (under). You’re not supposed to read from left to right it’s 8 (numerator) divided by 2 x (2+2) (denominator)

I got 1 with the math equation. If you get 16, you did it in the wrong order. (I was taught PEMDAS- parentheses, exponent, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction). Since the 2+2 is in parentheses, you add that together first and multiply it by the 2 outside of the parentheses since it goes together, then divide 8 by 8. Love this channel❤️❤️❤️
