I was an English teacher in Japan for 14 years. They're not kidding about all the extra studying. I mostly taught at 'cram schools' (juku), which are extra schools after regular school. Many of the students I taught went to multiple juku for different subjects on top of having extracurricular 'clubs' at regular school. When I'd go home at the end of an evening shift, usually after 10pm, there'd be kids on the train fighting to stay awake, still in their uniforms because they hadn't been home yet. It's because the competition to do well on entrance exams and get into higher ranked schools is extremely high. Speaking of school lunches, some of the schools I worked for had contracts with local public schools where I'd go to teach a few classes a couple times a week. If two of my classes fell on either side of the lunch break, they'd invite me to eat with one of the classes. I loved it. The teachers and kids were awesome and treated me like an honored guest. The food was amazing too. To me it was like restaurant quality Japanese food, just without the fancy trimmings.

When we moved back to my hometown, we stayed w/a friend of mine from India, the level of expectations for his kids to study and get good grades was heaps above our w/our kids. If his kids were giving him fits, they had to go to their grandparents, who lived next door, and were far tougher. One of my son's friend's family is from India also, and he was expected to do what his mother did to study and memorize pages of whatever subject he was studying. It really comes down to parent involvement and expectation setting from the start. I always told my kids I wouldn't push you to get better grades if you weren't capable, but no teacher we have ever talked to said anything but the problem was work ethic and/or organization and turning in homework. I kept telling them they couldn't fool their teachers into thinking they weren't smart. Forcing kids to play piano or other western instruments like violin isn’t about “proper” education or what not. It comes from a presumption that if you know music theory it can translate to other subjects like science and math.

Bs about the Obama vegetables thing. They've incorporated veggies in the lunches or veggies only lunches since the early 2000's.
@ErikPT8 ай бұрын
I graduated before that.. but in my state we didn't get much impact. To my knowledge, Texas schools hardly had that reach since the lunches didn't require us to pay for the vegetable if we meet 'free lunch' rule. I am shocked to hear that outside of my state did

The crazy part is these were the standards European students used to have until education became public. You learned manners, at least 2 languages in addition to Latin, a musical instrument, the classics, sports/fencing, etc. High school in America is such a waste of time. We’d be better off if our HS were primarily trade skill and life skill focused.
