Pumpkins are associated with Halloween because that's the time of year you harvest them. That and pumpkin jack-o'-lanterns are cooler than the ones made from turnips lol

And Irish immigrants, who brought the tradition over, found that North American pumpkins were much easier to carve. So the tradition adapted. But you can't beat turnips for looking absolutely terrifying lol.

Also, the jack-o-lantern carving origin kinda dates back to an old Irish folklore of a man named Jack whose soul was left to wander the Earth. There are a lot of varients, but the one I remember reading once or twice was that Jack won back his soul against the devil to prevent him from going to hell, but since he couldn't go to heaven either the devil offered up a candle (or Jack's soul) that was put in a turnip to wander around with.

It's mostly nostalgic because the warming spice blend is commonly used around the holidays. Cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, ginger, allspice, and sometimes cardamom. The blend itself is called 'pumpkin spice', so many places don't include any actual pumpkin.

The PSL from Starbucks does have Pumpkin purée in it. The website lists it in the ingredient list for the drink. The “Pumpkin Spice Sauce” added to the espresso and cream is where you find the pumpkin 🎃. I don’t know about other companies PSL drinks but in this video they only showed Starbucks cups.

Fall in the US is associated with like warm sweet aromas like apple pie, egg nog w/ cinnamon, pumpkin pie, etc, so the PSL evokes that. Of course, for foreigners that have different traditions it may seem strange lol. Even standing alone tho, PSL isn't bad, it's not like a gotta have, but I don't hear a lot of complaints when people try it for the first time. But of course everyones taste is different.

As a Native American, pumpkins (aka squashes) are native to Turtle Island (America’s) particularly now known as Mexico and vanilla are native to these lands. The other spices like Cinnamon and such came over from trading with other countries and such (Yes Natives used to trade with other countries believe it or not before colonialists invaded). The Spices give ppl that warm feeling during the chilly autumn weather & winter months. Also Pointsettias too are also native to these lands too as well and bloom in the southern parts of Turtle Island. Throughout the years many Europeans brought their traditions along (and plants/animals) and incorporated them with the native flora & fauna of the lands. So PSL’s give a lot of ppl nostalgia because it’s the season 😃 and we can thank our Irish friends for the carvings of pumpkins and such! 💖 It’s pretty cool!

In the U.S., many families make pumpkin pie for our harvest festival, Thanksgiving, as well as the late December holiday of xhoice. Pumpkin can go in soups and stews, and there's very little that can beat a fresh roasted eating pumpkin, one of the greenish-gray ones, doused in butter, spices of preference, and sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Omnomnom.

As I'm sure other people have said, there's no pumpkin in pumpkin spice. Its also called pumpkin pie spice, which is where the name comes from, since today the spice blend is mostly used when making pumpkin pie. Spice refers to the spices used to make it, not that it is spicy or hot. Its actually a sweet spice blend (sweet spices being those that are used to enhance or complement sweet flavors), which used to be more popular in American cooking in general. Nowadays you only really see sweet spice blends showing up in desserts and things that are more asssociated with autumn or winter, and the end of year holidays. Pumpkin pie, apple pie, mulled wine, eggnog. I think its so nostalgic for us because, for one thing, those end of year holidays tend to be Big Deals when you're a kid. But also because its an old flavor; your grandparents and great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents would recognize it.

Pumpkin spice makes Americans nostalgic about the fall season, not pumpkins🤣. Fall is a big deal in 🇺🇸 & a widely celebrated time of year. The leaves on the tree are changing colors, there’s a cool, crisp breeze in the air, high school, college & professional football season is in full swing, people are preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving with their love ones, we get to break out our cozy sweaters, haunted houses, hay rides & corn mazes pop up all over the country, etc. It’s just a really special time of year. 🧡🎃🍁

Perhaps this will help explain a little. I live in the USA but am of Irish decent. Carved lighted pumpkins originated in Ireland. Back in the day they would carve faces into Turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes and beets. They placed a light in them to ward off evil spirits. Then they moved to pumpkins because they are larger. Every Halloween it is a tradition to get a big pumpkin and carve it and set it outside with a light or candle inside it. It is a whimsical and fun tradition that is now known all over the world.

Jack o’ lanterns used to be made of turnips, and still are in places in England. It’s based of a legend of a guy called Jack who couldn’t get into heaven but made the Devil so angry that he kicked Jack out of hell, gave him a coal to put into a turnip for light and told him to go start his own hell somewhere else! That story comes from a natural phenomenon of seeing little lights in bogs and moors. (If you saw “Brave” you’ll hear the Scottish calling them “willow wisps” or “willow the wisp.”) When Europeans came to the Americas, pumpkins were indigenous rather than turnips, larger, and easier to cut fancier faces in, to scare away bad spirits on Halloween. (And the seeds are delicious roasted and salted.) Then on All Hallows’ Day, the 1st of November, you revere your blessed dead loved ones and pray for them, etc. (Many people don’t do all of that any more, just have fun with the pumpkin faces and asking for candy.)

It was "grainy" or not mixed well most of the time and wasn't a coffee drink. I'll take my PSL over that anytime. Funny thing, while traveling I've been to only one country that didn't have chains like Starbucks and Dunkin - Laos - but they were still advertising PSL, I guess for tourists. FINALLY, looks like Korea has caught on....unless they just made it for the video...

The history of pumpkins and Halloween: According to Irish myth a man named Jack was a gambler and not a nice person. He tricked two demons out of taking him to Hell. Finally, Satan himself was tricked as well. Since Jack was not welcome in Heaven and Satan wouldn’t allow him in Hell, he was cursed to roam the earth with a lantern made from a carved pumpkin. He is known as Jack of the Lantern or Jack O’Lantern for short. Every year on Halloween spirits walk the earth. Children carve pumpkins with scary faces (called Jack O’Lanterns) to ward off Jack and other evil spirits.
