Korey McDuffie's Scythe Control Deck Profile & Analysis!

I met up with our 2014 National Champion, Korey McDuffie, and he finally came out of the lab to play at ARG Orlando. For the past week he has been figuring out ways to make a deck that can combat this meta of the big 3 decks: Burning Abyss, Qliphorts, & Shaddolls. His deck formula proved to be triumphant over most of his matchups this weekend! He did not lose to a single Burning Abyss player, but his only 3 losses were to 2 Shaddolls and 1 Qliphort!

What's that white stuff on his mouth? o.O Also there's a pretty neat artifact, the purple shield. It makes it so that you cannot attack artifacts for that turn. Might provide some utility. Vs Dolls if you ss Scythe they can just chain El Fusion. I think Shaddoll Artifact is still a very strong yet. And dolls still have a huge match up vs BA, mix them back up with artifacts, they're still super powerful. There's a reason why moral got hit to one when it did, while people may be biased and disagree, but truth is, artifact dolls were better than denko dolls.

Great deck profile and wise words from our national champion , if i was to play this deck i would try to fit shadow mirrow in the side for the shaddol match up. I really dont think de-fusion is good right now sense the release of el-shaddol fusion and yes before someone point out i know scyth is dark but shadow mirror is just too powerful and IMO all rogue decks should run em in their side.

I thank you buddy, I actually had 2 Shadow-Imp's in place of the Night Beams the night before, just the Loli's convinced me to do the switch. Ultimately, Shadow-Imp still allows them to make giant Monsters, so you'll usually lose to a Construct, hence why I went for the 1 De-Fusion, to just allow them to Fusion Summon then get rid of that Monster. Maybe I could tune the rest of the deck where Shadow-Imp is better, like adding Mirror Force or Dimensional Prison.

Maybe hands in the side deck for Qli instead of Fairy Wind. He has 3 MST, 3 Ignition and Moralltach.

The problem with the Hands is they will just Carrier one away and try to OTK you. Ignition, MST, and Fairy Wind are much more reactive.

this decks very good the only weaknesses i see are light imprisoning mirror denko sekka and skill drain(despite the amount of back row removal you have) i give you props for making a very inovative deck but why didnt you test thunder king is my one question

I tested Thunder King, and it just isn't that great against anything, while hurting my own deck. Against Shaddolls, they just Fusion Summon a big monster and run it over. Burning Abyss doesn't get affected by it except for Scarm (which has 2000 DEF), and Qliphort will just equip Saqlifice to their Monster or activate a card that swings the ATK by 300 (one of the many Pendulum Monsters). Not only that, but it turns off your own Pot of Duality and Myrmeleo. If anything, it is probably decent against Satellarknight, but I don't think it is good right now, and could probably even be put to 2 on the F&L list.

He mains Downerd because he can Snatch Steal or Mind Control Dante and use Dante to summon Downerd.

The only problem I have with the deck is that it is meant for the big 4 and works well against them against rogue decks I get stalled out and find it hard to win

Just make sure you use all of your resources optimally! Playing reactive Traps make it hard to win unless you precisely counter all of your opponent's plays.

How'd he lose to Shaddolls? I have my own modified version of this and have gotten over 5 Shaddoll deck so far, completely stopped 3 of them from doing anything, and even demolished 2 Qliphorts out of the 3 I've played so far.

I dont really agree with playing soul charge, solemn and double time space. Just so many life point costy cards especially in a deck where your monsters dont protect you too well. Thats at least my view

The game ends pretty quickly to where the LP hopefully don't matter. Also, it isn't like you are going to play all of those cards in the same game, you will usually activate 1 or 2 of the pack of them, which yes costs LP, but hopefully helps you capitalize the gamestate back into your favor.

Dumb question but what happens if your opponent activates Shadoll Fusion (Or El) And you Summon Scythe with call or sanctum. Do they still get the fusion monster?

Yes they get the fusion cause scythe is an activated effect and will activate in a separate chain after the fusion and call/sanctum resolves.

yes scythe is a trigger effect so it will resolve in a new chain

Thats why you need to anticipate the fusion and activate before it.

All of them ^ are right. I actually just never made Scythe against Shaddolls, unless I am 100% certain they don't have El Shaddoll Fusion in hand, because even if you Sanctum>Scythe during their Draw Phase, they can just El Shaddoll Fusion in response.

How is Ragnazero good against qliphorts?

Basically, she makes it a bit harder for the Qliphort player to get field presence without Skill Drain or an expensive/risky pendulum summon, since any non-tribute-summoned Qliphort monster is vulnerable to Ragnazero's effect if their attack is boosted by Saqlifice or Carrier/Disk/Stealth being in the pendulum zone.

Right, I forgot all about that. I was just hung up on their own effects of being reduced to 1800 if summoned without a tribute, but I was like well 1800 becomes their original attack so rag wouldn't work. Forgot all about saq or the pendulum zone. Thanks

KoreyMcDuffie Korey the deck built looks sound, what you can do to make the deck more control based is add madolches, You will have more control and be able to dominate, Well tell me what you think about that idea or are you satisfied with the results that you have came up with.

Nigel Cox The deck is probably too tight to play Madolche with it, but they are a similar strategy. I should probably look more into them in the future when brewing a deck like this.

KoreyMcDuffie Korey thanks for being openminded for other suggestions.Adding Madolche, you dominate your own turn, while with Artifacts, you dominate the enemy's. So basically you claim their turn for your own. that just an insight if you want to take the build in that direction. lf you decide to however implement that idea would you enlightened me of what choices you use, it be good to get another perspective in seeing a build like this work.
