Korfball Promotional Video - What is korfball?

I wanna clear some things up about this sport, since this video does not explain very well what is going on. However, this is a complicated sport with lots of small but important rules, so despite my efforts to condense them this may be quite long. There are 8 players on a team. 4 boys and 4 girls. They are split into “divisions”, each with 2 girls and 2 boys. Each division must stay in their respective half. This means that you will either be strictly attacking or strictly defending at a certain time. Don’t worry, you won’t be doing the same role all game, after two cumulative goals (from either side) are scored, you switch ends, and if you were defending, you start attacking and vice versa. Note that during the game, you as a team don’t change the hoop (or korf as they call it in the Netherlands) that you are shooting into, when you switch roles, you simply switch ends. You do however switch the hoop you score into when the half ends. The game is played during two 30 minute halves. You cannot travel with the ball in your hands, not even dribbling. You may pivot, but that is it. Similar to other ball sports of this nature, you are allowed two steps to either stop or release the ball if you catch the ball whilst moving. Players may not snatch the ball out of other players hands. This means the only way to gain possession is intercepting a pass, or getting a rebound off a shot (I guess you can get possession off fouls too if you want to be picky, but I’m not going to go into the punishments for each foul, merely what you can and cannot do). You may only defend, or “mark” people of the same gender as you. To defend someone, you must be within arms reach of your attacker once they release the shot, you must be closer to the post (hoop, korf, whatever) than they are and you must have your arm up in an active effort to defend the shot. If you are doing this once the attacker shoots, then the attacker has fouled (defended shot) and you gain possession in a restart. This rule was made to make the game more accessible to lots of people despite height differences, since the game was originally a game for schoolchildren. However, the game has developed drastically, and now it is rare for a defended shot to be called unless it is blatantly obvious (most attackers will take shots whilst stepping back, as you see in the video. This gives them the gap they need to free themselves from the defender and make their shot legal. In fact, defended shots are so rarely called that defenders may actually block the ball after it has left the attackers hands but still not be judged as “close enough” because of the backwards movement of the attackers). All goals count as 1 point. Typical high level games will usually have around 40-50 goals total, each team scoring around 20 or so goals. It is a no contact sport: you can be fouled whilst taking shots (receiving penalties, which are the korfball equivalent of basketball free throws essentially, but you only get 1 chance, and it’s only 2.5 metres away from the post. This means it is almost a guaranteed goal in high level play. It’s not uncommon to see 100% penalty conversion rates). You can receive contact during a pass, which can result in a free pass (much harder to convert than a penalty, and I will describe what they are in more detail if you simply ask but I want to keep this from being 5 essays). Obviously there can be no shoving and pushing, although things can get a bit rough when fighting for a good rebound position. Just think of it like basketball and that should make sense. You cannot kick the ball, or hit it with anything below your knee High level games will play with a shot clock which acts the same as basketball shot clocks. And last but not least, no “cutting” is allowed. A strange rule which prevents the use of what basketballers call screens. Note that you cannot use someone else to free you from your defender directly to be able to shoot, not giving your defender a chance to defend you, but you are actually allowed to use other players to creat space or gain position if you don’t shoot from it. (Warning, niche tangent) this leads to the strategy of gaining a good rebound position, by placing someone near the post, an attacker can effectively use than as a screen to get a good position. But they just do this slowly so that the defender must make a conscious choice as to either follow them or stay the other side of the screening player. If they choose to stay the other side of the screening player, then the attacker is free to be passed the ball and shoot, as the defender CHOSE to not defend their attacker, rather than not being able to follow where the attacker is running. They could follow if they wanted, but they chose to stay behind. This is why it must be performed slowly. I realise this turned out to be ridiculously long, but I went into quite a bit of detail which obviously a short promotional video cannot do. I have a question. Why don't players get close to the goal to shoot? I didn't see anyone in this video attempt a shot underneath the goal. Is there a rule that a player must be a certain distance away from the goal before shooting?

@@whatsittoya9895 getting close to the basket is one of the most common and easiest ways to score a goal. I don’t know why they didn’t show it in the video tbh, I guess shots from far away are more exciting? Although, because of how effective it is to score from close to the basket (called a running-in shot ), it is often defended accordingly. It is much more favourable to let your attacker take a difficult shot from the outside than to let them in close, if that makes sense.

To defend a shot you need to defend the ball, it used to be the chest but it changed some years back. There's a fine line between a defended shot and a BLAM (bit like an NBA rejection)

Why would you disrespect basketball like that for, when basketball is clearly renowned ‘sport’ loved by many countries around the world? So, in basketball’s defense, I made the point that basketball is a sport, because not only requires more athleticism, but also more skill than Korfball. Therefore, if there were an argument to be made about which sport is superior (which is ridiculous), Basketball would definitely trump Korfball. And yes, I still believe an nba players skill set and athleticism would translate very well to Korfball, thereby completely dominating it if they wanted to, unlike a body builder would to the nfl or high jumpers to the nba, which are absurd examples.

Read a reference to this sport online and had to see what it was. Seems like a good team sport in a similar way to Ultimate Frisbee. I am, however, disappointed when someone sinks a basket they don't scream "KORFBALL!!!" at the top of the lungs. Seems to me that would make the game way more exciting. That and using the theme from Mortal Kombat.

Ball movement is mainly passing and shooting when you are not in a defended position. The ball is not dribbled across the floor like in basketball. It had been conceptualized as a sport where both sexes played. In netball, there are designated positions for players for the whole game. Only those designated as goal attackers can score in netball. Korfball requires players to switch zones so players get to play offense and defense in a game.

This seems like great sport but not good PR of it is at place so worldwide people don't know much about it;, also problem is Dutch - Belgium rivalry because for this to be Olympic sports it needs to have broader fan base and at least to have 5-6 strong teams from at least 2 continents ; and this just to be considered, to get into Olympics it requires minimum of 3 continental associations existing and sport being played on 3 continents

I was going to come in here and laugh at this as an american. But I could see this being great in the US for adult rec league's. Its mixed league. A couple can hook up with other couples to field a team I would imagine you could play a 4x4 as easily as a 8 v 8 you could use existing basket ball courts or this can be played outside easily. Costs would be minimal ball and hoops. As deep as that bucket is I saw alot bounce out so there is skill involved. Becasue you have to defend your own gender and there is no picks, You shouldn't have men getting physical with woman through hard fouls or picks. Professional? not here not a chance Rec level sport sure look at pickleball most americans laughed at it when it came out
