Proud Korg fan here... I can see that the same problem Electribes had from early 2010s are still there. Even step sequencer for the notes is still "hold a button and rotate a knob while staring at the tuny screen". I don't t know what's wrong with Korg. It seems like days of intuitive ergonomic design are over for good. Thank for the video! Best channel around.

IMO Korg have shot themselves in the pad by not releasing this 18 months ago. By now the world has progressed (pandemic or not), and I think your Pro's and Con's were spot on. Things like 32MB samples or non-controllable single multi-engine at a time are not enticing propositions. I was waiting for this device - minilogue XD meet Electribe R machine - but now when it's finally here - I dunno. I think this more like Volca Beats/Keys/NTS-in-one rather than Electribe RXD I was imagining. And aesthetically (I know it's only my personal opinion), it reminds of some basic furniture I made back in the 90's when because I had low quality timber i painted it black - that's what those sides look like to me 😄

I'm only a few minutes in, but so far it looks a bit more menu divey than I like, but also very versatile, which is awesome for those whose work flow jives with that. I personally hate sound design on the tr8s using just one encoder! So with the 4 on the Drumlogue, I have a feeling it might be a techno monster. While I'm not crazy excited by it's feature list, it seems like a good balance between sound design and live preformance. Tanzbar 2 design with a korg workflow should be a win!?!

I have the TR-8S and I’ve been waiting for this and will buy it. They’re different machines. Roland’s FM is nice but limiting all things considered and rightfully so. The sequencer sounds is amazing, and I’m glad I got the SQ-64 because it makes a lot sense coming from that.

@VincentPresley

Like several other people have said, I came here pretty excited to see what this could do but ended up not that impressed. The TR8S is great and I still go back to your in depth look at that one to remind myself of everything it can do (I just wish it had a song mode). Yeah yeah yeah it's not real analog but it sounds great. So far I'm not really liking the sound of the analog parts on the Drumlogue. It kind of sounds dull to me like the OG Drumbrute. No real oomph or character like a real 808, Vermona DRM, or even the Drumbrute Impact. I love making kits on the TR8S made up of various classic TR sounds mixed with samples and fm drums. Everything sounds great in that thing. I'm not a fan of Roland's fake analog synthesizers but they nailed it with the TR8S. Those tiny Korg controls are also a big turnoff.
@NunyaB1s
@NunyaB1s Жыл бұрын
Have you used an OG drum brute in person ? I found that YT vids did NOT do OG justice and just like a classic 808/909 you need to plug kicks and snares into a compressor to make it shine. I’ve found that my favorite kick actually mixes both of its kicks together and it thunders! Add some bit crushing…
@VincentPresley
@VincentPresley Жыл бұрын
@@NunyaB1s Yeah, I have both the Drum Brutes. Love the Impact and used it on a couple albums. I found the OG sound really dull but it's different enough to keep and they sell used for only $200 so it's not even worth selling. I now like it for what it is. It doesn't punch but for only $200 it's pretty great.

What I’m always asking for in a synth is: What is the ONE thing the machine does really well, or better than the others? Be it sound quality, build, workflow, interface, flexibility, price or whatever. This one doesn’t seem to do anything really well.
@jm6734
@jm6734 Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. These days with such high quality software for a fraction of the price, hardware needs to bring something special. So where does this fit in I wonder
@straighttalk2069
@straighttalk2069 Жыл бұрын
@@jm6734 Software depends on a lot of external factors that people often omit (that increases the cost) like you need a decent computer and audio and midi interface. Software can be effected by things like computer viruses, operating system updates. Software can become useless, if not updated (or as has happened to me twice) software companies can be bought out by other companies, who then stop development on your already purchased app, thus ending it's life. Drumlogue is a better than average hybrid drum-machine, that isn't trying to be anything else. DSI Tempest was four times the price and not half as good in my opinion.

For the same reason I differ about changing the kick tune, but am in agreement that being able to reassign would be nice for people. Great Tutorial!! Thanks!!! >>>> I couldn't find a single video on KZbin showing how to use the DL with a DAW, which is a shame. Would love to see that. Unfortunately none of the MIDI ROUTING channels seem to record the full pattern from the DL to a DAW, which is extremely disappointing. Also the memory of the DL is extremely small, so importing our own samples is almost a joke. There is also no option to export and save your patterns out of the Drumlogue, like for ex. the Drumbrute has. With such small memory, the user is forced to erase partners constantly to free space, not allowing the user to store their previous works or be able to recall them after. This option should exist to compensate for the lack of memory.

I really really hoped the drumlogue would be more like the Volca Kick and Drum in one device (laid out better) with the logue SDK or a new ER1. What's here is just so much less interesting to me, personally, than pretty much every other drum machine out there, esp the syntakt. Great review though.

So where is the 'Logue' tech? And where is the volca 'Drum' tech? Honestly just wanted a full sized volca drum with a multi-timber minilogue xd engine... feels more like almost full sized volca sample meets volca beats. Idk about this one.

It's interesting to see how manufacturers chase each other around. For a while, the rage was pure analog, then digital, and now we are in this hybrid time when everything coming out has analog and digital engines combined. I really like that a lot! Still, I would like to see more innovation/ individuality on the market. Just because one product was a hit doesn't mean we need 5 different devices that attempt a similar outcome. The competition is nice to see though, and competition does breed some benefits for us on the consumer level. There needs to be a whole new engine that will stand out from digital and analog. Something entirely new. We need it, or else we will have instruments forever coming out that are more or less very similar to something else from the past. I hope it happens in hardware form, because the workflow of software is less exciting overall. The korg drumlogue falls squarely into place with the latest hybrid drum machines. I still want one to explore and then sell, but doesn't look like anything that can help me find new musical territory.

Once you got into the menu diving and some of the (beautiful) possibilities with the controls for the on board synth, I dream of a same-sized control surface that could be racked above the drumlogue to get real-time knob-per-function control over that synth, something like the look of two dfam in a moog two tier rack. now that would be a dream. excellent review as usual!

I don't know, it feels a bit lackluster at the moment but we'll have to see what comes out in the future for the user engine. Like Korg have already done their homework with the Volca series so they know what features appeal to users. It would have been nice to see the MS-20 filter, Waveguide resonator or even the vacuum tube from the Nubass built in. Also would have been nice to have some kind of dedicated control element, that multiple parameters could be mapped to, for dj style build ups. Like the ribbon control from the emx/esx grooveboxes, having something like this that you could map multiple controls to would have been a nice addition to functionality. In this day and age nobody wants to use up a seperate pattern to create a fill pattern, it's just messy. Other grooveboxes have better ways of doing this, where the alternative pattern is contained in the original pattern.

Great review and this looks awesome, but 32 MB storage space in 2022? I don’t get it. Why is this always the case with new equipment? We are not in the early 90s anymore. Why do they limit the max storage? Can you insert a USB pen via USB to hold more samples?

I don’t know either but I think it has to do with allocating DSP to the digital effects engines esp reverb. I mean digitakt only has 64, but limited effects. The moc one has 2gb of memory but you run out pretty fast with all the effects available.

Makes you have to import samples sped-up/pitched just to save space and then pitching it back down after you have the samples in the unit. That's how it was with the Old Volca Sample. Very Old school Indeed lol

I'm glad they have the TR-style part pots, but also deeper editing through the menu. AND AN AUDIO-INPUT! And a decent sequencer with modern generative/timing features. Between all this and the open FX and motion sequencing it looks pretty sick!

I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted a pro version of the all too often slept-on Volca Drum. The simplicity of the two layers and their controls + there is nothing else out there that sounds like it. I don’t think Korg would have been cannibalizing the sales of their 150$ entry level drum machine, but they probably would have had a bunch of people upgrade. I guess maybe the lower sales volume of the Volca Drum + what is popular and being bought from their competition informed their choices. Oh well, maybe Elektron can make it, or someone can create a kickstarter campaign.

Well it looks like a frankenstein of Roland and Elektron drum machines (with the four knob screen thing). Apart from the multi engine I find its feature set quite similar to Syntakt (minus the MIDI track). The analog part just doesn't do it for me, the Volca Kick and Volca Drums sound much more interesting. Overall I feel like this thing doesn't stand a chance against Syntakt.

there's nothing roland about this. elektron, yes, roland no. I was hoping this would be a volca drum on steroids, but sadly no. it's more like syntakt's little brother, doesn't sound as good. even the little volca kick has a unique sound, esoteric as it is. this one just sounds lackluster.

This isn't a bad entry into the market for its price. I definitely would have gotten this over the Drumbrute that I have had for a long time, though I'm not sure whether I would choose this over the Syntakt. However, I just spent the money on Rytm Mk2, so I think I'll be good on drum machines for a while.
