Live recording on sequencers should be standard on synths. My first synths were Volcas and the Monologue, so I just assumed all sequencers were like that. Learning later that normally you have to stop to change it, all I could think was "wow, no wonder electronic music is typically super repetitive".

starsky or viewers, I need your help, I'm super torn. I'm fairly new to the scene, having been a guitar player for many years - your excellent tutorials were responsible for me buying a CRAVE! So Behringer owe you... speaking of Behringer, I am interested in the Deepmind 12, 12 is better than 4 apparently (polyphony) but I love the sound of the Minilogue XD (presets I should say)... but is the idea that using the Deepmind I can 'design sounds' the sounds that I like and not get too hung up on what i'm hearing in demos? What I hear online of the DeepMind (again presets) I'm not as keen on sound... so I guess the question is do I go Minilogue XD and enjoy 4 notes of polyphony and all its features, or is it better to get the Deepmind and... go deeper as it were? Here in Aus they are fairly close in price... this is my first foray into polyphonic and trying to avoid buyers remorse... I realise this is a hugely subjective topic... any advice would be welcome.
@StarskyCarr3 жыл бұрын
Interesting dilemma :) I prefer the sound of the XD oscillators, ring mod and FM. It also has the expand ability of the 3rd digital oscillator and all the various waveforms you can get for it (Mutable plaits being an obvious winner). I’m not a fan of the limited envelopes but can work with them. The DM can go much deeper on FX, envelopes and modulation but that comes with more menu diving. But it’s got full sized keys bs the Korg Mini Keys. So very difficult. FWIW I find it easier/quicker to get the tones I like from the XD. But either is a good choice - so I’ve not solved you problem I know :)

What’s up with the long humming sound over the talking at around 6:36 and for a few seconds?
@StarskyCarr2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s where the audio from the camera has unmuted. There’s normally the mic track plus a couple of audio tracks from the cameras which are muted. When editing things mess up occasionally and on long videos it’s hard to find them all - particularly as when your fixing one error the computer often doesn’t catch up with key strokes and you end up making more!! Aarg 🤦♂️😀

Have you tried to extend the stepsequencer/change the resolution? I encoutered the problem anything I play and record will not fit in the tempo.. it wil only play back in a slow way.
@StarskyCarr4 жыл бұрын
I think one of the programmes I demo in this uses a slower resolution. It basically doubles the length of each step per change. So from1/16 to 1/8 to 1/4 you’re doubling the time and halving the resolution which means something already programmed will slow to half the tempo. You can’t increase the length of the sequence and keep the same resolution. It’s always only 16 ‘notes’ maximum.
@s3nsec0rruptr804 жыл бұрын
@@StarskyCarr though you can use the arpeggiator on each step. So far it's been mostly a little awkward but with the arpeggiator and motion sequencing and a slower time division you coul, in theory, make a more complex sequence. I've failed so far but I'm also not genius.
@s3nsec0rruptr804 жыл бұрын
Well my nongenius status is not in question after that post
@StarskyCarr4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can have upto 256 steps in theory. Have the arp playing 16ths and change the chord/notes every beat. You’ll get 16 x 16 steps.

My work around for this is using the digitakt as the sequencer, bonus is you get 8 new lfo's and can automate in the same way the XD does.

Hi, new to you're channel and synths in general. Just wondered what are the risks involved in using these user waves/effects? Can they totally wreck the synth or maybe just crash it and it would need rebooting? Thanks
@StarskyCarr3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think they can totally wreck it! They have to be developed and uploaded using Korgs software so I suspect all the firmware stuff is added by that rather than developers and I’ve never heard of anyone doing anything disastrous. But... I guess there’s always a chance with any update etc?
@CSW823 жыл бұрын
@@StarskyCarr Wow thanks for for the fast response. Yeah it just freaks me out a bit when they all come with a 'use at your own risk' warning, but I suppose they have to cover their backsides just in case. Thanks for your help and great channel by the way.
@Getthenderson4 жыл бұрын
Love my XD but funny you say sequencer is a big bonus, it's great don't get me wrong but my biggest wish for the XD would be at least 32 steps, you either have to reduce the step resolution or use the digitakt or other sequencer if you want more than 16 steps. Not the biggest draw back and overall love it.
@StarskyCarr4 жыл бұрын
Yeah ... i could always go with another bar.. funny though how what you create has that classic groove. Obviously in the early days everything had 16 steps. Makes sense now why so many tracks always sit on the one root note. No time for chord changes :)

It costs not a lot less than DM6... And these VCOs sounds a lot like DCOs... I can't explain why. So for me DM6 (or even DM12) is a better competitor. Just three point which are better: a polyphonic sequencer, triangle waves in OSCs, cross-modulation (as I remember DMs has a lack of FM-ability). Yes, I ignore the custom wave in the digital oscillators. They sounds like a free instrument via Reactor or SyncModular. Not better! I mean those Karplus-Strong... P.S. Actually the sequencer in DeepMind is the worst part IMO... Why they've didn't made something easy to use? ) I mean a note seqencer. Maybe because that was their 1st "big synth"...

7:30 - Hi, Starsky! Sorry, but it's not multi-tembral. Only polyphonic :) Virus is multi-tembral - it can use different patches for different voices. Just an example.

KiR-3d If it is not multi-timbral, how was it playing multiple different drum sounds together?
@StarskyCarr4 жыл бұрын
I didn't say it was multitimbral. What I''m doing is playing a baseline and an arp line on the sequencer at the same time.. both with the same sound. The point here was that I could do that as its a polyphonic sequencer.. and it enables different patterns to be played on top of one another thereby building a track live. Thanks for pointing it out in case I confused anyone :)

@@StarskyCarr Don't worry, it happens to me very often. You make a lot of long videos so I suppose you just have no time to check them before completion. The main thing is the general idea. Everything else no matter. So... I just wanted to point on that, not to embarass :)

It's great that you put chapters on the video. But if I'm scrolling through It's because I want to hear sounds from the machine. KZbin doesn't let me move the cursor to an arbitrary time it always goes to the chapter marks. So I lose interest and quit watching. Something to consider.
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
I get that… same here as it’s something I do when watching stuff … and it can get annoying. On balance though it’s a benefit for the video - more a KZbin issue I think than a single channel to overcome.
@jasont.95594 жыл бұрын
My only real gripe is the cheesy keybed and overall build quality of the unit. I played one in my local shop and the look and feel of the unit really put me off. The overall design is good, it's just the material/finish choices that kill it. Maybe the desktop module is better? The subtraction of those crappy keys would be a plus.
@StarskyCarr4 жыл бұрын
I’d prefer larger keys in the studio, but the small footprint is handy for a live setup.
@Deeplycloseted4354 жыл бұрын
Ehhh, its a $500 VCO poly synth, so its about as quality as one could expect. It wasn’t that many years ago, maybe 6 years ago, that there were literally ZERO VCO polys on the market. This little synth has some nifty tricks up it’s sleeve. I bought a Prologue and I sent it back, because I just didn’t like it enough, compared to this, and it lacked the motion sequencer which really sets this thing apart from other things on the market. I would have gladly payed another $150-200 to have that motion sequencer on the 8-voice. I have other 6 and 8 voice polys to play with, but I liked the Minilogue so much, I thought the Prologue would make sense.

Yeah i'm not impressed with this release. like does the synth actually ship with any digital waves? It looks like they've handballed it to third party developers, who are not only expected to actually develop useable sounds but also charge for their work (which I would consider are mostly overpriced when your only getting a couple of waveshapes or samples). like how fucking hard is it to just load up a SSD with a bunch of waves generated from various sources like FM, additive, wavefolding, acoustic or percussive audio or indeed other synths? instead your expected to figure out how to load sounds on yourself. compare this to the wavetable editor in serum that will allow any audio source, and offers countless extra functions and effects. Honestly cannot recommend this synth less for anything beyond Regular analog subtractive synthesis
@StarskyCarr3 жыл бұрын
There’s quite a few digital waves onboard and loads of free stuff available inline. I think if they’d added freely available waveforms in a product that people paid for they’d be breaking the licensing for the freebies, so leave it to you to download yourself. Otherwise it’d cost us all more... for free stuff.
@geephlips3 жыл бұрын
Starsky’s introduction explains that he is just highlighting four standout features of the XD. The video does not cover Korg’s contributions to the third oscillator, which would be a fairly long video all by itself. And IMO, comparing a VST to a hardware synth is a fool’s errand. There are 20-year old VSTs like NI’s Absynth that are vastly more complex than any hardware synth ever, not to mention a ton of $10 iOS synths. If you want super deep synths, stick with software.
