I just ordered a Minilogue XD desktop and a Electro-Harmonix Grand Canyon FX pedal. I plan on building a hardware setup. I have a MPC Live 2 and a Launchkey to go along with everything. My next purchase is probably going to be a Wavestate, Opsix, or Modwave. I'm also going to need some kind of basic mixer eventually. I own at least 10K in software, and I've realized that software doesn't have a resale value. It's mostly due to companies either not allowing license transfers or they charge too much for transfers. I have a lot of regret when it comes to software. I highly recommend new producers to stay away from most software, unless they don't have room for hardware. There's obviously some essential software that's worth having, but a lot of these vst companies are charging more than hardware, and it's not worth it. You may get more sounds when it comes to software, but who really uses most of the sounds that they get in large libraries.... A lot of the libraries have a ton of unusable stuff, just to fluff their selling point. Now that hardware is affordable, in comparison to a lot of software, the value of software is losing imo. If they weren't so greedy when it comes to reselling something that you paid good money for, I would probably feel different. Imagine if Korg made you pay them if you sold your synth, or if they just said that you can't sell it. That's what my experience has been with software companies. It's mostly due to them not wanting competition imo. If people could sell their already paid for expensive vsts or libraries, they would obviously sell them at a discount, so the software companies greedy slimeball ethics don't want that. Be careful with companies like Toontrack and Evolution-series. I have close to 2k invested between the 2, and Evolution-series doesn't allow licenses to be resold, and toontracks wants $15 dollars per item. Hardware is the past and the future. I also hate having to use a mouse and keyboard to make music. I'm also tired of having to scroll to find what I'm looking for. I probably use about 2% of the software that I own. There's some stuff that I haven't used in months or more, but I paid $100+, in some cases $500-$1000+. I got a lot of Toontracks stuff in bundles and on sale, and I still paid them $1140+, but I would have to pay them almost $500 to transfer licenses, if I wanted to sell all of my stuff. I would lose more than half of what I paid, due to people not wanting to pay full price from a reseller. Their vsts aren't really anything to brag about either. I rarely use them, and I've never made a single song with any of their stuff.
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting insight on a topic not frequently discussed: resale taxes for software. I was shocked when I found out that companies like IK Multimedia made people pay even to transfer the licence for the hardware, but luckily no one is buying their garbage, so the world should be okay. I think most of the people choose VST because of the convenience of having everything fired up together with the computer, but I never understood how people stayed inspired with instruments that are effectively just a little tab hidden in some sub menu somewhere. If I enter my room, I see my instruments, I picture their sounds, I start imagining what I could play with the, I touch them, I start twisting knobs, pressing keys, and so on. On a VST, you have first and foremost remember you have that specific plugin, then find it, if you remember the names and features of all huge libraries like yours, then the only interaction is the click of a mouse, for every single sing you want to do with your instrument. I understand, and I am sure, that this is the quickest way to "get the job done", but since robots are already the quickest way to do human work, why not automate everything everywhere, ditching humans and "getting the job done"? And that's not even about the money, because if someone is using pirated software, they are probably downloading even more than someone paying, so it really is down to the approach. I am sorry for your situation, especially from an economic point of view, and I hope you will get back your passion for music with the hardware instruments you like. 🧡 (as for mixer, I used to have a Behringer RX1602, super slim, super convenient, you can put it anywhere, and if you don't feel the need for faders, the best option)
@CatFish1072 жыл бұрын
Wow, I certainly appreciate the insight to a perspective so very far from my own. Thanks for sharing, and Dexba, thank you for your thoughts as well. Please don't take any of the following as an attempt to discount what you've said. To share my own perspective, I am just starting out within the first couple of years learning to make sounds (I hesitate to call it music yet). The huge variety and instant availability of free software for making music blows my mind. I imagine if I were to have started making music around the time my pals were starting to try shredding on guitar, my options for computer based music making would have been slim and pricey. For a musical rookie who started out later than most, but has loved computer stuff for multiple decades, this seems like a huge bonanza of potential. Heck, VCV rack has more hours on it during the last year than Steam! And the former cost me zero$.

Also: I just picked up a minilogue xd in great shape for a nice discount today, and I've been loving tweaking it. So much BIG sound. Mmmmnm. Tasty
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
@@CatFish107 And you're completely right in using what you feel is the best for you! Plus, as for "quantitative" capabilities, software will always win, so the more you learn about it, the better. On a side note, I'm glad you're mentioning VCV, because, as it is, VCV is the perfect fetishisation of hardware in a software form, a bit like the solid front grills on many electric cars :) In a sense, I can see you're already finding your way of "form" over the sheer "raw power" that something like a Reason modular or a Max script could give you, and that's GOOD, I will never stress it enough: music is fun, music is joy, whatever can give you, us, joy, is more than welcome, and in the previous comments we were just discussing the dispersive nature of VSTs (something well documented) and the economically problematic nature of software (something very little discussed). But by all mean, I have absolutely nothing against software in general, especially free software (I mean, it's crazy that companies like Instruo, one of the most expensive, is giving out VCV module versions for free!) and I happy you're finding your way with that, and now with a tasty Minilogue XD 🧡

This is something I can almost afford. I have a whole line of effects, so the inside effects, won't be a problem, even though that seems to be one of the selling points. Not being a Synth player, per se, this looks perfect, for me. Thanks!
@Dexba Жыл бұрын
I have many pedals and external FX too, but having effects inside is a major bonus that's frequently overlooked! In almost all cases, the general quality is downright inferior, but having the tight integration is super handy, if not needed for some patches like the one I did on the PRO3, where all the performance comes from the modulation of the effects inside the instrument. Another major plus is being able to save the state of the FXs together with the synth patch, being able to get back to that EXACT sound you created, so the more time passes, the more I'm drawn to synth sporting effects inside 😁 That said, the Minilogue XD is a great synth with or without FXs, and I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it! 🧡

I would have loved to spend more time with the MiniXD, the plugins alone are a rabbit hole, and if this video is the result of just two days with it, imagine with more study... Yes, we definitely need the Drumlogue, and I still don't know what's holding them back: they have Volca-knowledge, they have Logue-knoledge (for digital stuff), they have even SQ-64-knowledge, seems like they would only need to connect the dots and boom, Drumlogue. The Minilogue and Minilogue XD are the most underrated synths even though they are popular. There is no VST that sounds like this. (Meaning it has it's own character) And people who haven't owned one should buy one because it sounds even better live that after recording.
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! Especially about this strange duality of popular AND underrated. Many people buys them because they're cheap and they are waiting for the upgrade, and that translates to a nonchalant approach that hurts the expression of the capabilities of the instrument. Thank you for pointing that out 🧡
@GraffHabit2 жыл бұрын
I love my monologue XD but I have to disagree. Yes it has its own sound and character but digital synth plugins are absolutely capable of recreating the types of sounds present in the Korg Minilogue XD (as well as other analogue / subtractive synths like the Moog Sub37, Little Phatty, etc!) You may need to tweak things, add filters and effects chains but not the you can replicate the sounds. That’s the beauty of sound synthesis: it’s repeatable and programmable. Where this synth really shines isn’t in the studio, it’s in live performances. As for studio use it has found it’s way into some of my recordings although if I had the chance to buy it again I would buy a Moog Sub25 instead and replicate the XD sounds with various plugins in my MPC and Daw.

Do I need 1/4 speakers or can I even just do cheap pc speakers with adapter? Headphones?
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
In my very (non professional) opinion, use whatever you like. Usually, headphones are easier to find cheaper for a better quality, and you will never have to sound-treat your room. Personally tho, I feel a lot of pressure and an incoming headache after only 30 minutes of use, so I prefer to stick with speakers. You can go the "monitor" route, the pc speaker route, the dangerous Hi-Fi speakers route, even the cheap Bluetooth speaker route, just be aware under a certain quality level you will be missing some frequencies, or you will hear them as strange reverberation. I know some gurus and pros online swear you need a pair of Barefoot to start out with a Volca, but if you're in a pinch, use whatever makes you happy, while you save for a good pair of speaker (for example, I never bought PC speakers, and I kept attached my Adam A7x to the PC while playing games: a blast 😁)

@Dexba3 жыл бұрын
I can agree to some extent, and I enjoy digital and virtual analog synths, but this digital rendition of analog stuff is just plain awful. It's muddy like it's coming from a monotron delay recorded with a phone. And sure I know, but I was looking at the machine as it was shipped, and as you can hear... I think I managed to enjoy it and pull something off of it :) The Minilogue XD has great selling points, a great value for money, and it can be both practical and fun, but let's try not to defend all its part for no reason: no synth is perfect, I don't see why this should be the exception!
@eyeball2263 жыл бұрын
@@Dexba I agree that the digital "basic waves" mode sounds dull, but I see that as a sort of backup mode for if you think your patch really needs another saw, square or triangle wave. The main attraction is the ability to write your own oscillators for it. I can't think of any other synth that lets you do that. I think perhaps Korg's mistake was shipping it with some fairly boring default oscillators. Just to add, I'm not defending the Minilogue outright. I feel it has some flaws (lack of flexibility in modulation routing for example), just that the digital oscillator is not one of them. At least, I felt what you wrote in the description was an unfair dismissal of it.

Unfortunately, I've never tried the Minifreak. From what I've gathered, I'd say the Minilogue is a better starting point, especially if you're new to synthesizers or you don't want to mess around too much with external pedals. Plus, the keyboard is really good, probably the best in this form factor. The Minifreak is definitely more versatile, having so many algorithms, but the keys are in the old-fashioned short minikey style, and the build quality is definitely more plastic-y. I could be worth checking out the Microkorg 2, now that it is out, and try to listen to some demos with your eyes closed ;)

@@Dexba super, thx for your feedback! what about to go full on like on a moog sub 37? i see that on the used market there are some great deals. and holy fuck the sound is so amazing! my plan for my minimal starting setup is a super nice synth and the akai force. so i could start getting into sound design and also to make loops and tracks. dont want to use a computer so the force looks like the right option so far...
@Dexba10 ай бұрын
I have no experience with the Force, but I do with the Sub37, and while it is a staple in most studios, I've never liked it fully. It always sounded a bit thin, for being a Moog, and I always had to crank the drive in order to get some meat! This is also probably the reason why it is so widespread: it's never too "characterized" or offensive, or invasive, but if you're looking for basses I would go for the Minitaur, if you're looking for "Moog sound" I would go for the Matriarch (which can be had at around the same price as the Sub37). But if you love the Sub37, and you know why, absolutely go for it, because it is a beauty of a synth. I was just a bit confused about the whole "Moog sound" mythology, which I am not sure I've found in it :)

This is extraordinary!! Do you really think the Minilogue OG could come near this sound though? Seems like such a different sound
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much 🧡 Unfortunately, no, the OG Minilogue cannot get even close to what you heard on this video, because it lacks the digital oscillator on which I based half of the sound upon, and also it doesn't feature any of the (quite glorious) FX that added a lot of character to the patch in general. I think the previous Minilogue, while different in many aspects, has been superseded by the XD, and unless you know for sure you will never have a use for all the added features or you find the OG for an absurdly low price, I would just go for the XD :)
@fractalimmersion2 жыл бұрын
@@Dexba yes it certainly seems that way listening to all the XD jams, it is simply in a league of its own… well, I think the Deepmind can challenge despite lacking the digital oscillator but the OG Minilogue is more of a simple machine!
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
@@fractalimmersion If you don't own a DM12 already, I wouldn't go out and buy it new, since... let's say it is not the best way to spend your money :) The OG Minilogue is simpler, and while analog, it sounds thinner and colder, like the A4. Not saying it's a bad thing, since I love the OG and the A4, but I knew some people in the past who made the mistake of "yeah, I don't want the digital stuff, I will go full analog" thinking of... Minimoog, I guess? Of the three, I think the best choice is still a good deal on a used XD, a desktop if you have a master already, otherwise the minikeys are completely fine and the best in the business

@@Dexba very good advice! I think that when I get to the point of purchase I shall go to a music shop and try both the XD and the Deepmind to see which workflow is best for me. I’ve realised the last couple of years, that it is just as much about the workflow suiting the individual as it is the quality of sounds, wouldn’t you say? And it sounds like you’re saying the XD’s workflow is better? Just going from photos it does appear that way
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
@@fractalimmersion you're completely right: the best instrument it's the fittest to your needs, paraphrasing Darwin ;) DM12 major selling point was the analog oscillators, but they sound a bit weak, so no need to be too excited about that feature. It also sports various FX, but they are generally lower quality than the one on the XD, plus the XD has the advantage of the programmable digital part, with a strong community behind. And if you compare the sound, it's amazing how powerful and full can sound a 4-osc synth vs a 12-osc one! But I don't want to influence you too much: go try them, take your time, and just remember the DM12 is not worth the retail price, so search for a used one 🧡

What kind of amp do you need? Is a guitar one ok?
@Dexba3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean for the Minilogue XD? I strongly suggest avoiding guitar amps, since they're mostly designed just to give the best results with - you guessed it - guitars. You wouldn't benefit from the stereo output and the frequency response isn't ideal either, and in some extreme cases you could even end up damaging the amp. I personally use Adam A7x and iLoud Micro, the ones you see in the video (very small, super cool, they easily fit in a backpack, and they cost one-fifth of the Adam) bit.ly/Adam_A7x_pair bit.ly/iLoud_Micro_BK

Mini keys, but a good kind of them. Very playable, not crappy stile like the Microkorg :)

Is this sound from a preset?
@Dexba2 жыл бұрын
No, it is not :) I have had recently sold the OB6 so I tried to create the most “luxurious” preset I could on the Minilogue XD. I was pretty satisfied with the result, so I decided to record the video too!
